鲁迅、张爱玲、三毛或许是时代的巅峰，但你莫言，你是时代的精神领袖。你笔下的那个半张蓝脸半张白脸的单干户蓝脸，他生性固执偏激，他死倔不肯屈服，他一再忍耐悲痛和孤独只藏心中，他说：“我要单干，活给那些公社的人看。”他拿起了锄头挑起扁担背着包袱，成为了神州大地上最显眼的“单干户”。还有西门全龙、蓝解放、迎春秋香、庞抗美……他们都是那个时代最鲜明的人物形象，他们是那个年代，那个社会背景，那个地方最真实的影子，他们代表了最原始的村民形象。而我，透过这些，仿佛来到了那个时候，见证了当时新中国成立表面的壮观完美，见证了社会底层种种不合理的制度，见证了农村的巨大变化，见证了我最喜欢的、那个倔强固执的人物——蓝脸，他的苦难。

当我读到在“文革”期间的集市批斗会上，我的蓝脸，被红卫兵们绑紧了双手，被泼了红油漆，被高声的喇叭批斗他种种不入社的劣迹，被自己以为最亲的养子骂成“老畜牲”。他的固执他的倔强他的孤独，我仿佛看到了那些贪婪的、疯狂的、狰狞的表情，我仿佛听到了那些嘈杂的、凄厉的、狂喜的声音，我仿佛嗅到了那些血腥的、酸臭的、腐烂的气味，我仿佛感受到了寒冷的气流和灼热的气浪。我突然很想哭，我真想跟你描述一下我当时的感受，这种哀伤难以描述，难以形容，因为这样的哀伤是建立在人世间一切描述和形容之止的，莫言你了解吧。这样的哀伤，不仅仅是为蓝脸的遭遇，更是为了所有人，为生活在那个年代，那些被文革扼杀了人性的百姓，那些千千万万在尘埃底处像泥巴一般扶不起的人。莫言你知道吗？那一刻，我仿佛变成了书中的一个人，是在集市间看热闹的小村民，或是一个被抢走了几只鸡的农户，甚至是蓝脸本人，无所谓，我都感同身受到了。

然后我想跟你谈谈你的文字。以前常常认为长篇小说不过是字数长、事件多、篇幅大。当看到你如青山流水般连绵不断的文字后，感受更多的，是那种“长篇胸怀”，更像如你曾谈述过的——胸中有大沟壑、大山脉、大气象，有粗砺莽荡文气，有容纳百川之涵。

Dear David，

I am afraid that you will think me unpardonably negligent in not having

answered your letter dated 7, December sooner, but when I have told you the

reason, I trust you will be convinced that the neglect was excusable. When your

letter arrived, I was just in Hong Kong. As my family could not forward it to me

during my absence, it has been, therefore, lying on my desk until the moment

when I took it up. Now the first thing I have to hasten to do is to write to you

these few lines to express my deep regret.

I enjoyed many pleasant sights during my trip. I shall be pleased to give

you an account to of them when I see you next.
