所谓“合群”，正是强调在认识客观存在的群体关系的基础上，自觉地、主动地去维护或促进群体的正常关系，使人生得到健康、顺利的发展。客观方面所揭示的是人生的“实存”，主观方面所要求的就是“应该”。这就是说，人生不仅是群体的，而且应该是自觉去过群体生活的，应该能够合群、善于合群。人只有能合群、善于合群，才能积极维护和促进群体的生存和发展，同时也才能使个体更好的自立。这就是个人只有在群体中才能得到发展的道理。自立与合群，是人生得以全面发展的两个主要方面，特别是在现代社会商品经济普遍发展的条件下，要使个性的全面发展和能力的全面发展成为可能，就必须把自立与合群结合起来，在竞争与协作中，全面发展自立与合群的能力。人生的自立与合群，蕴含着积极的竞争与协作。竞争与协作，都是人生进取与事业成功的机制。积极的竞争，也可以称作良性的竞争，是人类生长、完善和社会发展的普遍现象。不过在专制的、强制的社会制度和环境中，这种竞争机制得不到正常地、良性地施展，常常酿成嫉妒、诡计，甚至撕杀;而在比较自由、民主的制度和环境中，竞争能够得到正常的、良性的发展，在社会生活中普遍发生作用。其实，竞争在最早普遍施展的英国，也是与竞赛作同义理解的，而且作这种理解的就是讲出“人对人是狼”的霍布斯。在他看来，竞争者为取得成功，“奋力自强以图与对方相匹敌或超过对方，就谓之竞赛”。但这种竞赛如果加进自私的目的和自私的手段，就会变为互相敌对和损人利己的争斗。由此，他提出保证个人生存权利的契约论和自然法，以约束个人的为所欲为。这就要求有为达到利己目的的履行契约的协作。
