1948年底，时任国民党徐州“剿总”副总司令的杜聿明以赴刑场的心情上战场，兵败被俘，两次以砖头猛击头部，自杀未遂。蒋介石得此消息，也不免心恸垂泪。但不料想，杜将军进了共产党的监狱，几年之间，便彻底“赤化”，于1957年被第一批特赦释放。蒋介石颜面尽失，雷霆震怒，不准许杜的夫人曹秀清和子女出入台湾。曹秀清带着婆母和5个儿女在台北生活十分窘迫。为了兑现当年蒋介石手谕的许诺，曹秀清曾找过宋美龄、张群等人反映自己的处境，然而均未结果。

1957年，曹秀清突然接到女儿杜致礼和女婿杨振宁的信。说：“您的‘老朋友’与我通信了，他非常关心您，惦念着你们母子的安全。”曹秀清幡然领悟到“老朋友”就是令她朝思暮想、魂牵梦绕的丈夫杜聿明。

曹秀清清楚，她只有取道美国才可能见到她的“老朋友”。于是她向台湾当局提出了要求去美国看望女儿的请求。但蒋介石却“关照”：“杜聿明的妻子儿女不得再离开台湾!”

1958年初的一天，宋美龄突然派车接曹秀清到士林官邱。见面时宋美龄握住她的手说：“杜夫人，恭喜你女婿获得了诺贝尔奖，你该去美国看看他呀!”曹秀清喜出望外。宋美龄接着说：“杜夫人，希望你从美国回来时，把杨振宁也带回台湾，让他协助蒋‘总统’反攻内地。”这时，蒋介石也走进屋内问：“孩子们怎样?你的身体可好?”

曹秀清沾了女婿的光，终于获准去美国探亲了，期限为半年，逾期不归，罚以巨款。为防不测，台湾不允许她带子女，还特意找了两个位置相当高的人作保。1959年，曹女士来到美国，再也没有返回台湾。

杜聿明获释后最大的愿望就是妻子能来内地与他团圆。然而曹秀清却一直心存疑虑，丈夫以败将之身，寄人篱下，能有什么好日子?她不相信按丈夫的性格，他会真心留在内地。因此她写信给丈夫，劝他不要强求自己。当她终于明白丈夫铁心扎根内地并非权宜之计时，她于1963年10月回到了北京，甘愿与丈夫一起过清贫的日子。临回国前，她听说内地物资比较匮乏，写信问丈夫需要什么?丈夫想知道能贮存食品的冰箱是什么样，于是杜夫人为其从美国带回了当年很奢侈的一件家用电器。血海硝烟中厮杀了大半生的杜聿明无论如何没有想到，他们家因政治原因导致的夫妻隔绝，竟因为物理的原因，因为一项诺贝尔奖而化解消融。
