Im just writing to let you know that were all well, and I hope you are, too. Unfortunately, Ive got some rather bad news for you: Im afraid I made a bit of a mess of Johns car. Anyway, heres what happened.

We were on our way to Carols after a long party, and I suppose it must have been about eleven o’clock. Well, the last few miles back home were really dark and deserted. I now realize I was probably going a bit too fast for a country lane because, although the road was fairly straight, I drove up onto the curb and went into a tree.

Of course, John was absolutely furious and started shouting at me and cursing. After we d argued for a few moments, we decided to look at the damage, and he calmed down a bit. Well, we found we could move the car, but the wing was caught on the wheel, so we couldnt drive it. I tried to pull the wing clear, but I didnt succeed.

Anyway, John went off to phone for a breakdown lorry, but while he was away, I had another go at the wing and this time succeeded in pulling it right off. I threw it onto the back seat, and by that time John got back and we were ready to go?so we didnt need the breakdown lorry at all. John has more or less forgiven me now, but he was very angry with me for a few days. I suppose I was a bit careless.

1957年，我从北京航空学院毕业，与一批同学一起分配到国防部第五研究院一分院工作。五院是中国第一个专门研究导弹和火箭的研究院。院长是赫赫有名的钱学森同志。当时，他说了一句话，我印象非常深刻：“搞导弹不能靠一两个科学家，要靠一批有经验、能干的年轻人。”我们这百十个人学的是航空专业，却被安排来搞从没见过的导弹，大家不仅毫无怨言，而且倍感责任重大，因为在我们心中，党的召唤就是最高的志愿，祖国的需要就是唯一的选择。在这方面，朱光亚、钱学森等一批杰出科学家早已为我们树立了榜样。他们这批留学海外的知识分子，有的是在国民党统治时期，为了强国梦而出国的;有的家庭比较富裕，长期过着衣食无忧的生活。但他们都亲眼目睹了旧中国的贫穷落后，求学海外的经历，使他们更懂得祖国强大的意义，新中国的成立让他们终于看到了希望。他们积极响应中国共产党的号召，满怀报国热情，毅然放弃国外的优越条件和丰厚待遇，冲破重重阻挠，投身到祖国火热的建设大潮中。朱光亚同志率先发表激情澎湃的公开信，号召全美中国留学生马上回到祖国去。钱学森同志已在美国学习、工作20年，是世界级著名科学家，具有极高的学术地位和广泛的社会影响，被美国官员称之为“无论走到哪里，都抵得上5个师的兵力”。他要回国，不只是抛弃优越的条件，还遇到了巨大的政治阻力，在受到美国政府长达5年软禁的情况下仍不改初衷，义无反顾回到祖国、报效国家。当年，曾有人问钱学森：“你为什么回国呀?”他说：“回国是理所当然的，你应该问那些没有回国的人为什么不回国?”钱学森归国后，取得了很高的成就，美国政府多次邀请他访美，要给他发奖，他不去，他说：“当年美国政府那样对待我是错误的，如果他们不承认错误，不向我道歉，我是绝对不会去的。”这就是我们中国知识分子的骨气。我们这一代人经历过屈辱，经历过苦难，这种经历成为一种宝贵的精神财富，使我们能够怀着对祖国热烈而深沉的爱，听从党的指挥，积极投身到祖国的建设中去。

从常理讲，搞科研应该有起码的基础。早在1952年，毛主席曾经感慨，现在我们能造桌子、椅子，能造茶碗、茶壶，能种粮食，还能磨成面粉，但是一辆汽车、一架飞机、一辆坦克都不能造。可见我国科技水平与世界先进国家的巨大差距。最初提出搞导弹的时候，除了钱学森同志，我们谁也没有见过导弹。在当时国家“一穷二白”的情况下，面对难以想象的困难，我们不怨天尤人，不妄自菲薄，怀着强烈的事业心和责任感，发扬大力协同精神，迎难而上，想方设法啃下了一块块“硬骨头”。记得我带队研制卫星天线时，为了弄清卫星上天后天线折断的原因，要做许多地面试验，但哪有现成的设备和实验室呢?我们的实验室是从中科院力学所借来的一间仓库，我们在仓库里搞了一个实验用的转台。做这种实验，卫星天线一旦折断，就会伤人，危险性大。为了防止意外，我在仓库里给每个同事找了个包装箱盖，让大家顶着当“盾牌”。他们有的爬到房梁上，有的躲到墙角里，都从“盾牌”缝里看卫星旋转时天线的反应。经过反复试验，我们终于弄清了问题的症结。还有一个测试太阳敏感器的实验，为了模拟太阳，我们借了一个探照灯，也是拉到库房里，让它当“太阳”。那时的很多实验都是这样因陋就简。虽然条件简陋，但实验结果却从不打折扣，这里面凝聚的是我们航天科技工作者无穷无尽的智慧和爱国强国的情怀。

我们在酒泉基地搞“两弹”结合的时候，刚开始连帐篷都没有，住的是“地窝子”，就是在地上挖一个大约一米深的大坑，在坑上面搭个支架，在支架顶上盖些草，在坑中打一个大通铺，几十个人睡在一起。即使是后来在研究院时期，有一段时间也没有宿舍。我是每天将铺盖带到办公室，白天工作时，将铺盖卷放在一边;晚上往办公桌上一铺，就睡在桌子上。我们始终保持高昂的革命乐观主义精神，以苦为乐、以苦为荣，再苦照样出成果。

在“文革”时期，知识分子变成了“臭老九”，我们不仅要克服科研条件基础差、物质保障匮乏等客观困难，还要在思想上经受政治冲击，忍受精神上的委屈和折磨。1970年4月24日9时35分，“长征1号”载着“东方红1号”直上云霄。105分钟后，卫星绕地一周，新疆喀什站报告：收到太空传来《东方红》乐曲，《东方红》响彻寰宇!可是，为了保证《东方红》能在太空唱响，我们不知费了多少心血。《东方红》乐曲装置的主要设计者叫刘承熙，因为社会关系比较复杂，不能在这个岗位继续工作了。但是，方案是他设计的，很多问题还需要问他，他却不能进到保密车间里来，怎么办?我们想了个办法，让他在门口等着，遇到问题时，车间的人就出来问他。他就以这种方式，毫无怨言地参与了研制工作。当“东方红1号”发射时，他却在干校劳动，没能及时享受到那份成功的喜悦。当时，还有很多人也受到了不公正的待遇。在当时那种特殊情况下，没有人关心我们的生活待遇和工作条件，甚至连上班不上班都没人管，大家完全凭着“爱祖国、跟党走”的坚定信念自觉努力工作着。这种信念，不仅支撑我们渡过难关，也支撑我们坦然面对各种坎坷和冤屈。

“文革”后期，我爱人被下放到干校，我因为工作忙，没法带两个孩子，就把老母亲接到北京来。1969年国庆节前，北京要清理外来人员。一天晚上，红卫兵来我家查出身，我老老实实地写上了“地主”。第二天我上班后，红卫兵就来把我母亲抓走了。我下班回到家，发现两个孩子正由邻居照顾，怎么也找不到老太太被关在什么地方。最后，不得不找领导把老太太领了回来。但回来后怎么办呢?北京是呆不下去了，我只好让老太太带两个孩子连夜回老家。想到一个没独自出过门的60多岁的老太太，带着一个刚上一年级、另一个还在上幼儿园的小孩，晚上还要去赶火车，当时心里特别难受，眼泪忍不住就流了下来。但是刚把“一老二小”送走，我马上又回到了工作岗位，继续投入到“东方红1号”的研制中来。我相信，党和人民终究会理解我受的一切委屈，而我一定要把自己的工作做好，因为这是我的责任，也是我的使命。

1935年5月，红军的先头部队强渡大渡河成功后，国民党就调集了大量的兵力增援泸定桥，企图把红军的队伍切开，但先头部队的战士们用两天的时间走了一百六十公里赶在敌人增援部队的前面到达。而后续红军部队组织了二十多名勇士的突击队，由于桥板被日寇拆除，所以攀着只剩下铁链的大铁链，冒着对面桥头堡敌人的枪林弹雨，奋勇向前，他们的身下大渡河水流湍急，一旦失手或受伤落入水中则必死无疑。但勇士们仍然冒着密集的炮火，奋不顾身，勇敢顽强的向前冲，一个掉下去了，下一个冲上来，受伤的战士在要掉下去那一刻还在向敌人射击。

他们知道他们只能前进，在他们身后有毛主席，有党中央，有千千万万个红军战士。最后剩下的勇士们冲破了敌人在桥头堡的火墙，冲进了泸定城，和后续上来的红军战士一起彻底消灭了国民党的部队。这次战斗的胜利粉碎了蒋介石要把红军消灭在大渡河以南的企图。为长征的胜利大下了坚实的基础。

记得那是大年初四的一天，家里面的大人都出去了，家里边只剩我和我的小伙伴们一起在玩鞭炮。整个小区里面都沉浸在欢乐的气氛之中，我们大家玩鞭炮也玩的很开心了，可是渐渐的我们大家也都玩儿烦了。于是有人提出来要不要玩一些新的花样。我们大家找来一些空瓶子然后把点炮点燃之后放入瓶子里面盖上盖子，不一会鞭炮点燃之后就会把瓶子给炸的很高。我们大家尝试着新的玩法，都很开心了。可是不一小会就发生了一件惊心动魄的事情，吓得我们大家一身冷汗!我把鞭炮放瓶子盖上盖子之后，瓶子飞的特别的高，险些炸到我的脑袋。后来听爸爸妈妈说这种玩法是非常危险的，我们大家也就停止了这种新的玩法。

这个寒假过的可真是惊心动魄啊!还好没有受伤，这次我可是真的收到了一个大大的教训。
