I am pleased to invite you to a luncheon, to be held by the Monterey Institute of International Studies on October 12, 2006 at noon, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the death of General Stilwell and in honor of his daughter, Mrs. Nancy Stilwell Easterbrook. Mrs. Easterbrook was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Monterey Institute and founder of the Stilwell Scholarship, which is dedicated to supporting students from China.

For many years until she passed away, Nancy had served as a goodwill ambassador of the American people who made unremitting efforts to promote exchanges between the United States and China. The Stilwell Scholarship she founded helps support deserving students from China who have come to the Monterey Institute to pursue professional degrees in translation and interpretation, international policy studies, language teaching and business management.

world.However,I have my reservations.In my submission,reading is more valuable

The majority Han Chinese have long followed the tradition of eating laba

rice porridge on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month. The date usually

falls in min-January and is a traditional Chinese festival.

Legend about the origin of this festivity abounds One maintains that over

3，000 years ago sacrificial rites were held in the twelfth lunar month when

people offered up their prey to the gods of heaven and earth. The Chinese

characters for the hunt and the twelfth month (lie and la) were interchangeable

then， and ever since la has been used to refer to both. Since the festival was

held on the eighth day of the last month， people later appended the number

eighth (ba in Chinese)， giving us the current laba.

It is important to know our good and bad points because this knowledge will

Li Hua is a Yong Pioneer. He is going to the park. Now he is waiting for a

bus. Suddenly he finds a watchon theground.He askssome people, "Whose watch is

gets on the bus. She has no seat. So he stands up and says, "Here is a seat for

Today, my mother has something to do, so she needs to meet her friends. I

pieces of bread, a bit of cold meat, and a cold potato. It looked such poor

lunch; that grandpa ran into the house, and grabbed two fresh apples, and gave

it to the tinker. The tinker thanked grandpa and ate the apples. And then he

went down to the brook to have a drink. When he came back, he said, “Now my boy,

we shall plant a tree!” “A tree?” asked grandpa, “But I thought only god makes

trees!’’ “True,” said the tinker, “Only god makes trees. But sometimes we could

help him. And the tinker pulled out a stick, and dug a hole in it. In which he

found a bark. He took the bark out of the stick, and gave the stick to grandpa,

saying, “Here my boy; wash it in the brook.” And so grandpa went to the brook,

and washed up the stick. And then he went back where the tinker was standing

with the bark in his hands.

There he found the tinker, dragging some grass from the ground. And then he

took the stick in grandpa’s hand, and used the grass to tie up around with the

bark. Then he slipped the bark back in the stick. And then he took it out,

squeezed the water out, and told grandpa to wash it up again. When he came back,

he put the bark back in it again. And then fitted it into a hole, which he had

dug; and used the end that didn’t have a hole, and fitted it in the ground; a

few months passed, and the tree grew as strong as the strongest man.

I like to watch Disney films very much. Mickey Mouse is my favorite cartoon

image. I find Mickey Mouse and giant panda look so much alike. Both of them have

round faces and two lovely ears. I can’t help myself watching giant panda on the

Internet every day. They attract so many visitors to look at them. I love

panda.
