Cuisine

Yangzhou dishes may be one of the reasons why the people of Yangzhou are so infatuated with their city. They have an appealing color, aroma, taste and appearance. The original color of each ingredient is preserved after cooking, and no oily sauce is added, so as to retain the fresh savor of the food.

In Yangzhou all dishes, whether cheap or expensive, are elaborate. Cooks will not scrimp on their work, even with Zhugansi (stewed sliced dry bean curd), a popular dish that costs only a few yuan. Dry bean curd is made by each restaurant that serves it, so the flavor is guaranteed. The cook slices the 1-cm-thick curd into 30 shreds, each one paper-thin but none broken, and then stews them for hours with chopped bamboo shoots and shelled shrimps in chicken soup. In this way the dry bean curd shreds can soak up the flavor of the other ingredients, and the soup is clear but savory. It was first observed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1907. Long before that, there were days honoring mothers even in ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the mother of the gods who was given honor.

Later, in the 1600s, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday". It was celebrated during June, on the fourth sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.

In the U.S., in 1907, Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national mothers day. Jarvis persuaded her mothers church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate mothers day on the second anniversary of her mothers death, which was the second sunday in May. The next year mothers day was again celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national mothers day. They were successful. 春节到了，万家团圆，家家户户都张灯结彩，喜气洋洋。我还穿上妈妈给我买的新衣服，穿上新鞋。妈妈说：“孩子快点吃，吃完了，我带你去外婆家拜年。”一听说去拜年我高兴得跳了起来。我去外婆家的路上看见了有许多人带着礼品，有的开车，有的走路，每个人都喜笑颜开的。

I have spent fifteen years in my life. So, this is my ninth year to study. By the way, my name is WengJingru. My father thought hard about my name. He consulted the dictionary two times to find how to name me. Of course, this name is very good and I like it very much.

Sometimes I think I am a little strange. Because I often think the world isn’t full of happiness. And I want to be different from others. I hate superficial people. But always I am very out-going and kind to others. I can’t say ‘no’ to others. So I don’t know how to refuse.
