1991年，吴敏霞开始在上海市第二跳水学校接受训练，1998年，吴敏霞入选中国国家队。

2004年，吴敏霞与郭晶晶一起夺得雅典奥运会女子双人3米板金牌，并在随后的女子单人3米板比赛中获得亚军。2008年，吴敏霞再次与郭晶晶配对，成功夺得北京奥运会女子双人3米板金牌。
