It took us one more hour to get there. When we walked into the house, Grandma was busy preparing lunch in the kitchen. 清代乾隆年间莆田人廖必琦这样赞美家乡的荔枝：“谁把芳名挂齿牙，方红陈紫总堪垮，林间玉酝滋甘露，尘外仙罗散彩霞。厚味由来高两粤，异香此际压三巴，莆中尤是闽中最，乌石山前有几家。”此外，在荔乡莆田，据廖必琦记载，在他祖先庄园里曾发现奇特的品种，肉呈绿色而味甘。廖又咏诗赞曰：“有宋芳名何可当，吾家荔枝自成庄，君谟此日如增谱，记取新诗入锦囊。”诗中叹惜蔡襄（字君谟）当时作《荔枝谱》时没有记载这个品种。

荔枝树有着极强的生命力，能活数百甚至上千年，福建各地至今还保存不少历尽沧桑的古荔枝，其中最为著名的当数莆田城内宋氏宗祠庭院中的“宋家香”，距今已有一千多年的历史，依然年年结果，核小肉厚，蒂实皆香。

莆田荔枝始于唐代，其味香甜、醮核率高，具有止渴、滋补功效。宋代蔡襄曾写下世界上第一本《荔枝谱》，称兴化荔最为奇特。后来，荔枝树又被莆田定为市树。郭沫若先生六十年代初在莆田考察时，曾题下“荔城无处不荔枝”的诗句，盛赞莆田荔枝。

莆田荔枝，色香味俱全，自古以来，就博得人们的喜爱。曹学全《荔枝歌》云：“海内如推百果王，鲜食荔枝终第一”。莆田也称“荔城”，素以品种多、产量高、质量优而闻名。像“陈紫”、“宋家香”、“状元红”都是本地的优良品种。其中“陈紫”更是荔中绝品，成熟时散发出阵阵幽香，沁人心脾。本世纪初，它还远涉重洋，传入美国南部各州及古巴等国。

荔枝还可加工成荔枝干、荔枝罐头、荔枝蜜饯、荔枝酒等，并可入药。据《本草纲目》介绍，它的果实“能止渴，益人颜色……通种、益智、健气”；壳能治“痘疮出发不爽快……又解荔枝热”；核能治“脾痛不止，妇人血气，疝气颓肿，阴肾肿痛，肾肿如斗”；花和皮根能治“喉痹肿痛”。壳和根还可提取栲胶；木质坚实，可作家具。人誉之满身皆宝，并非虚传。莆田民间还有这样传说，大暑这一天吃荔枝，营养价值和吃人参一样高。
