失落的“伊甸园”——两河流域文明的毁灭

由于土地盐碱化而引起古文明衰亡的最早案例

位于两河流域的美索不达米亚平原，是人类文明最早的发源地之一。在这片肥沃的土地上，古代世界最伟大的三个文明曾经在这里繁荣昌盛。苏美尔、亚述、阿卡德和巴比伦人相继在公元前4000至前2000年间，在这里创造了高度发达的城市文明，令世人叹为观止。然而，这些古文明的发祥地如今却是盐碱泛滥、流沙纵横的不毛之地。

就这个问题，美国亚述学家雅可布生对西亚出土楔形文字史料做过一次深入调查。他发现美索不达米亚的土壤盐碱化由来已久，始于公元前2400年的拉格什城邦，不久就发展到幼发拉底河，1000年后盐碱化进一步扩展到古巴比伦。20世纪50年代，美国芝加哥大学教授布雷伍德在伊拉克的耶莫组织过一次由地质、气象、动物和植物学家共同参加的大规模跨学科考古发掘，结果简直令人难以置信。布雷伍德在《伊拉克库尔德史前调查》中这样写道：

库巴唐”死亡谷”事件

巴西圣保罗以南60公里的库巴唐市，二十世纪八十年代以“死亡之谷“知名于世。该市位于山谷之中，六十年代引进炼油、石化、炼铁等外资企业300多家，人口剧增至15万，成为圣保罗的工业卫星城。企业主只顾赚钱，随意排放废气废水，谷地浓烟弥漫、臭水横流，有20%的人得了呼吸道过敏症，医院挤满了接受吸氧治疗的儿童和老人，使2万多贫民窟居民严重受害。

卡迪兹号油轮事件

1978年3月16日，美国22万吨的超级油轮“亚莫克?卡迪兹号”，满载伊朗原油向荷兰鹿特丹驶去，航行至法国布列塔尼海岸触礁沉没，漏出原油22.4万吨，污染了350公里长的海岸带。仅牡蛎就死掉9000多吨，海鸟死亡2万多吨。海事本身损失1亿多美元，污染的损失及治理费用却达5亿多美元，而给被污染区域的海洋生态环境造成的损失更是难以估量。

Today, as the development of the technology, people live a much better life than before, the average wage is promoted highly. The economy develops at the cost of polluting the environment, we can see the pollution everywhere, like the river water is dirty, the situation is so serious that we must take some action to control the environmental pollution. Yet,with modern fishing methods, more and more fish are caught.We know that if too many trees are cut down, forests will disappear. Yet, we continue to use powerful machines to cut down more and more trees. We see that if rivers are polluted with waste products, we will die. Yet, waste products arestill put into rivers. We know that if the population continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years, there wont be enough food.What can we do to solve these problems? If we eat more vegetables and less meat, there will be more food available. Land for crops feeds five times more people than land where animals are kept. Our natural resources will last longer if we learn to recycie them. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control. Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.

I read a piece of news recently. It says that in Japan marly businessmen ave selling fresh air to customers.and now it is becoming more and more popular. Why?——Fresh air is getting less and less in Japan, and so is it in the U. S. A.

In fact, environmental pollution is a very serious problem the whole world is facing.

it is mainly caused by the waste products released from artificial substances, industrial production and increased consumption of goods. Bedsides, the use of chemical substances in agriculture also causes environmental pollution. Look at the sky, you can see that dense smoke is being released from the high and big chimneys; those dirty and poisonous substances are flowing into the rivers that we use for drinking water and millions of tons of waste products are heaping around us.

How to change this condition?More and more countries are trying to work out some effective means to bring it under control, but no great success has been made.

白色污染White Pollution

With the remarkable improvement of people’s living standard, people tend to buy more goods. As a result, a plenty of plastic bags are threw around and caused white pollution. Not only does it do harm to the environment, but also give people the impression that the city is dirty. As we all known, plastic bags are non-biodegradable material and it will stay in the soil for a long time. What’s worse, the poison released from the plastic bags is harmful.

Mind Your Behavior in Public Places

Last Sunday, I went sightseeing with my friends in the Fairy Lake Park. The park was full of freshness and beauty of spring, with the sun shining and birds singing. When I was enjoying the fantastic scenery around, something unpleasant caught my eye. A young couple in a boat were eating, talking and laughing loudly as if they were the only people in the world. Whats worse, they spat and even threw rubbish into the lake, totally ignoring the noticeable sign "No Littering" nearby. What a shame!

Such behavior left me deep in thought. If all visitors to the Fairy Lake Park do as the couple did, the lake will be severely polluted and soon turned into a huge dustbin. I think all of us should mind our behavior in public places. Only in this way can we live in more comfortable and beautiful surroundings.
