在现实生活中，无论是事物还是人物，都有自己的内容系统，每个内容系统都由若干个内容侧面构成，而每个内容侧面也都由若干个内容无素体现。但在五六百字作文篇幅里，它没有那么多的空间和时间来描述某个内容侧面里多个元素，更难以是一个人物的多个侧面的复杂的性格系统。因此，它必须把笔墨集中落实到描述事物或人物某一个内容元素上来。

我们来看朱自清的《背影》。这篇文章只用了几个生活片断便描写出父亲舔犊情深的形象。作者写了在徐州会见父亲，也写了父亲在扬州办理丧事，更是写了父亲在南京为“我”送行。即使写在南京送行，作者不仅写了父亲为“我”亲自送行，并在候车时细心照顾“我”，而且以极大的努力为“我”买桔子。“我”到了北京后，父亲还来信关照。几个生活片断反映了父亲为人处世的某一个内容侧面，并突出地勾勒了他这一个侧面中的一个内容元素----慈爱。

在人物众多的内容侧面和众多内容元素中，我们选哪一个内容元素作为写作的突破口是至关重要的，它往往成为一篇文章能否成功的艺术基因。一般来说，我们应该选择一个能够准确、传神地概括某一侧面整体特征的一个元素。朱自清的父亲“慈爱”，正是他为人处世侧面中最有代表性，最能透出整体神韵的一个元素。
