1909

In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Womans Day was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of that month through 1913.

1910

The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Womens Day, international in character, to honour the movement for womens rights and to assist in achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.

1911

As a result of the decision taken at Copenhagen the previous year, International Womens Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded the right to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

Less than a week later, on 25 March, the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working girls, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This event had a significant impact on labour legislation in the United States, and the working conditions leading up to the disaster were invoked during subsequent observances of International Womens Day.

1913-1914

As part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Womens Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters.

1917

With 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women again chose the last Sunday in February to strike for "bread and peace". Political leaders opposed the timing of the strike, but the women went on anyway. The rest is history: Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. That historic Sunday fell on 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia, but on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere.

Since those early years, International Womens Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international womens movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations womens conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated efforts to demand womens rights and participation in the political and economic process. Increasingly, International Womens Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of womens rights.

The Role of the United Nations

Few causes promoted by the United Nations have generated more intense and widespread support than the campaign to promote and protect the equal rights of women. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in San Francisco in 1945, was the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right. Since then, the Organization has helped create a historic legacy of internationally agreed strategies, standards, programmes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.

Over the years, United Nations action for the advancement of women has taken four clear directions: promotion of legal measures; mobilization of public opinion and international action; training and research, including the compilation of gender desegregated statistics; and direct assistance to disadvantaged groups. Today a central organizing principle of the work of the United Nations is that no enduring solution to societys most threatening social, economic and political problems can be found without the full participation, and the full empowerment, of the worlds women.

据说瘦西湖风景如画，我早就想去一览它的风采。刚到扬州，我便迫不及待吵着闹着要去瘦西湖。兴许是无比兴奋的缘故吧，我觉得天空格外湛蓝，花朵十分娇艳，树木也显得十分有精神。很快，我们来到了瘦西湖风景区。刚踏入一步，一阵清爽的凉风使正处炎热夏季的我不由得浑身抖擞，感觉从热腾腾的蒸笼中出来，到了一片凉爽的绿荫地。

首先映入眼帘的是一排排绿油油的柳树，耳边突然传来一阵船划过水面的声音，往右一看。我立刻被震撼了：三三两两的船只在湖上划着，划过后，水上碧波荡漾，远处，各式各样的古典楼阁矗立在这青翠欲滴的树林中，显得很有古雅风味。

数不胜数的花草树木看得我眼花缭乱。下面，我准备去瘦西湖的景点。“咦?”一个名叫“徐园”的景点吸引了我的注意，特别是那个“园”字，显得十分有特点，可以说得上是笔走龙蛇了。我慢慢走进去，亭台楼阁、绿树红花，可以说得上是一个“妙”字。远处，隐隐约约能看见一两座亭台或楼阁，近处百花竞争开放，小草绿茵茵一片，小池塘里还不时会有鱼儿在游动，这地方，称得上是世外桃源了。满池的荷花在微风中摇曳着，又在荷叶的映衬下显得亭亭玉立，宛如一位位少女在跳着轻盈的舞蹈。

出了“徐园”，我沿着河畔径直向前走，突然，阵阵清脆悦耳的风铃向我传来。定睛一看，一座大桥横贯两岸，似乎风铃声就是从那边传来，我加快脚步，向那里奔去。

从正面看，有五个亭子矗立在桥上，因而得名：五亭桥，当然它还有另一个名字：莲花桥。阵阵微风吹过，桥上挂着的风铃也在“叮叮~”作响。坐在桥上，徐徐微风中夹杂“叮~”的风铃声顿时令人感到无比惬意。享受着阳光，眼睛望着湖中的碧水，身子靠在柱子上，真让人感觉自己仿佛到了仙境一般……

“噢，太棒了，暑假终于来到了!”炎热的暑假终于来了，可是去哪儿玩呢?哎，对了，就去我一直梦寐以求的旅游景点――扬州古运河风景线吧。

就这样，我们全家加上我的表哥陈志文踏上了通往扬州的旅程――坐上了直往扬州的专车。来到扬州，哇!真是名副其实呀!机动车道的两边一片绿色，如同贴上去的绿色水彩。近前一瞧，原来全是小树呀。我们直奔古运河风景线。沿着河边曲径，古运河水清澈见底，花岗石栏杆在阳光中闪烁着异样的光彩，河岸边是一盏站美丽的彩灯，岸上长满了碧绿的柳树、翠绿的桃树，宛如一幅幅绿色的壁画。唉，只可惜现在是白天，不是漆黑的夜晚，如果是夜晚，灯全亮了，五光十色，桃“柳”争艳，迷人极啦!

游玩了古运河，我们又奔往另一个旅游景点――茱萸湾公园。一进茱萸湾公园的大门，啊，一阵阵鲜花的芳香扑鼻而来，让人闻了顿时心情舒畅、心旷神怡。一丛丛、一簇簇五彩斑斓，可爱极了，就像一位位美丽的仙女穿着五彩缤纷的衣服下凡人间，在大地上翩翩起舞，把我的眼球紧紧地吸引着不放。

我这双“千里眼”哟，从大门这边就清楚地看到远处有几匹马驮着人潇洒地度着小步，“嗒嗒、塔嗒”欢快的脚步似乎比花儿还有魅力。我闹着要和表哥一起去赛一赛马。等我跑到那儿，惊呆了，没有一匹马是跑的，都是一步一步慢慢走。看来，这“跑马场”应该改成“走马场”啦!也好，这总比没坐过马背和屁股颠得生疼好一点!

实际上我只游了扬州美丽的一角。我很想在以后的节假日能游遍美丽的扬州，有兴趣和我们一起行动吧!我等着你们哦!

游扬州瘦西湖作文3

听说扬州的瘦西湖很有名气，那里不但有清澈的河水，悠悠的木船，而且还有古色古香的建筑。于是我和爸爸就利用暑假，冒着炎暑,经过一上午的奔波，乘车来到了扬州瘦西湖旅游景区。

这里真是一副美丽的风景画，湖水碧波荡漾，波光粼粼。湖上不时有几条游船来来往往地穿梭着。湖中几条鲤鱼在水中嬉戏，溅出一朵朵亮晶晶的水花，“作出”了一圈圈的圆晕。湖边栽上了桃树和柳树，而且是每三棵桃树一枝柳，这正是唐代诗人李白在春天赏花时所描写的“花红柳绿”。瘦西湖在清代康乾时期就已形成了“两堤花柳依水，一路楼台直到山”的湖上园林景色了。

我们乘上小船，荡舟瘦西湖，来欣赏这里的景色。首先来到的是凫庄。这个凫庄是建在水中的，而“凫”字表示的是鸭子的意思，所以凫庄的意思就是浮在水面上的鸭子。

我们又来到了当年乾龙皇帝钓过鱼的地方。说到这儿，还有一段故事哩!那天，皇帝来这儿钓鱼，可是每次钓上来的都同一种鱼，他觉得很奇怪，就问大臣：“朕今天来这钓鱼，为何钓上来的都是同一种鱼?”大臣回答：“这一种鱼肯定听说今天皇上要来，就争先恐后地咬诱饵，希望自己能成为皇上的盘中餐，这样它在水中地位更高了。”皇上听了哈哈大笑。

我们又来到二十四桥。它高24米，有24个台阶、24根柱子。它呈白色是根据古诗 “二十四桥明月夜，玉人何处教吹笛。” 建造的。那为什么叫24桥呢?有的说是有24个美女、有的说......至今连考古家争论也没一个结果。为了让瘦西湖参观的人更多，因此人们就留下了这个迷团，所以建了这座“24桥”，余下的就任游客自已去想象了。

我们还看了“五亭桥”。它有十五个桥洞，据说当中秋节夜晚，一轮圆月挂在天空时，每一个桥洞都能映出一个圆圆的月亮。这就是一首诗中所描述的“十五的月亮十六圆。”

瘦西湖还有许多风景秀丽的景点，如白塔晴云、春流画舫、望春楼等。水中有座座亭台楼阁、水面座座古老小桥、水中条条鱼儿、岸上花红柳绿，好一幅国画长卷。

瘦西湖的景色果然名不虚传。

“耶，暑假终于来了!”你知道我为什么期盼暑假的到来吗?因为暑假里，我、同学和张老师可以去扬州旅游了。 夏令营的通知一下来，我这心里就兴奋极了。立即赶回家问妈妈：“妈妈，学校组织去扬州夏令营，我能去吗?”“当然可以，不过你要答应我几个条件!”妈妈说：“你去扬州要做读书笔记，回来之后要好好完成暑假作业!”我欣然一笑说;“没问题!” 之后的每天晚上，一想起来要去扬州夏令营，我就激动得睡不着觉。扬州到底是什么样子的呢?想着想着才进入梦乡。 一眨眼，就到了夏令营的日子，我们16位同学跟着张老师坐大巴来到了火车站。

一上货车，我就把大包小包零食拿出来跟大家分享。火车开动起来了，我的心里激动极了。就一边欣赏风景，一边吃零食，可舒服了! 火车进了扬州火车站，我兴奋的跳下床，收拾行李，跟随导游，开始了扬州之旅。我们首先来到了著名的瘦西湖，这名字挺有趣，难道是因为“瘦西湖”很“瘦”吗?在瘦西湖，我们举行了夏令营开营仪式，然后就开始游览瘦西湖了。放眼望去，小鸟在枝头歌唱，微风吹拂柳条翩翩起舞，满池的荷花盛开着。我想：瘦西湖跟西湖差不多，都有诗人作诗，都有画家作画，就是比西湖“瘦”很多。也许，它的名字就是这样来的吧!

随着导游，我们又游览了美丽含蓄的何园合奇特的世界动物之窗，然后我们回到了营地，结束了一天的快了旅程。 养精蓄锐以后，第三天，我们乘车来到了淮安，这里是周恩来总理的故乡。我们参观了周恩来故居，了解了周总理成长的很多故事。离开淮安，回到营地以后，我们又参加了夏令营联欢会，有的同学表演了幽默的小品，有的同学表演优美的舞蹈……会上还颁发了优秀营员证书，很高兴我也当选了。这可让我高兴了! 第四天一大早，我们游览了茱萸湾公园，那里有可爱的大熊猫，威猛的狮子，强壮的老虎……他们都悠闲的躺在树荫底下乘凉。中午，我们还体验了烧烤的乐趣，自己动手烧烤，真是别有情趣，虽然我们水平都不高，但是都吃得很开心。 然后，在五龙亭国际玩具城，我们都痛痛快快的购买自己喜欢的玩具，还学会了讨价还价。 一晃四天过去了，美丽的扬州给我们留下了美好的印象，我们也结束了快了的扬州之旅。这次夏令营，让我受益匪浅：我学会了自理，学会了与同学相处!

-----吃龙虾

今天上午，我们冒雨赶到扬州市的江都，听说那里的邵伯龙虾很有名气，就想在那里品尝一下。

坐了三个多小时的车程，终于到了江都的邵伯镇，那边有一条美食街，招牌上全是各种龙虾的宣传画，我们选择了其中的一家龙虾店，一下车，龙虾的辣香味扑鼻而来，那时，我的口水滴溜溜地滚到地上。经过一会儿的时间，一盆清水龙虾就上来了，哦，原来清水龙虾就是没有放辣椒的龙虾，听那里的人说， 清水龙虾是经过近一个小时烧制而成的，所以，口味非常的鲜美。吃了几个，果然不出所料，特别的好吃，这样好吃的龙虾我怎么能放过呢?不一会儿，桌上龙虾壳已经堆积如山。接着又上来了一盆红烧的龙虾， 红烧的龙虾比清水龙虾辣多了。可我这个人平时特别喜欢吃辣，不管三七二十一，抓起龙虾就开始剥起来，短短一会儿工夫， 龙虾壳已经装满了一个垃圾桶， 而我的脸上和嘴上也是通红的，真好吃，名不虚传，有机会我还会来品尝。
