有人说：茶文化属于农耕文明，与现代化格格不入。我以为此论大谬。在我看来，茶文化在现代社会不但不会消亡，相反，还会发扬光大，为什么?因为茶无论作为一种饮品，还是作为一种文化载体，其所具有的某些特性，刚好是现代社会所需要、所缺乏的。

其一，茶是沟通最高端的精英文化与最基层的民间文化的一座桥梁。在中国传统文化中有一个说法，叫做“琴棋书画诗酒茶”，这是中国传统文人的七种修养，属精英文化的至高境界，其中有茶;在中国民间也有一种说法，叫做“柴米油盐酱醋茶”，这是老百姓过日子的开门七件事，其中也有茶。茶在两种文化层面里都扮演着重要角色，它是唯一的，因此也是不可替代的。事实上，茶在现实生活中，也确实扮演着沟通高雅文化与民间文化的特殊角色，它能使文人们多几分民间情怀，也可使百姓们多几分文人情趣。这实在是一个很可爱的角色。

其三，茶是世俗生活与宗教境界之间的中介体。佛教与茶的关系堪称水乳，古来素有“茶禅一味”之说。茶禅如何一味?首先是渊源有自。茶之兴，得益于禅。唐人封演《封氏闻见记》载：“学禅务于不寐，又不夕食，皆许其饮茶。人自怀挟，到处煮饮，从此转相仿效，遂成风俗。”可见，茶的驱除困魔的功效，恰好为禅家所利用。而“天下名山僧占多”，名山又多产好茶，近水楼台，茶为禅用，也是顺理成章。但是，光有渊源还不够，茶禅之所以能够一味，还有更深的禅机。禅宗讲究顿悟，顿悟强调的是“当验”，这种体验往往是只能意会，不能言传。恰恰就在这一点上，禅与茶“神合”了。想想看，茶的滋味，谁能准确地描述出来?

恐怕是有一百个人就有一百种体验。这，不就是禅理吗?所以，禅宗常说一句话，叫做：“如人饮水，冷暖自知。”当你手捧茶杯，欣赏着一片片翩然下坠的茶芽，品味着集香甜苦涩诸多味道于一身的茶汁，体验着那只可意会、不可言传的禅境时，你是不是也能感受到一种“虚融淡泊”的心情呢?那或许就是“茶禅一味”的真谛吧?

本来，茶是属于凡人的，却被赋予如此浓重的宗教色彩。我相信，在现代社会，恐怕再也找不到像茶这样具有宗教特性的神奇的物质了。

其四，茶是通往诗化生活的重要媒介。现代工业文明带给人类的最大缺失，是使我们越来越远离大自然、远离绿色，远离诗意。现代都市把市民分隔在一个个钢筋水泥所建造的“笼子”里，割断了人类与山水田园的联系;现代科技越来越发达，也只能是促使人们想出越来越多的点子向大自然索取，向人类自身索取，致使人们同机器越来越亲密，同计算机越来越亲密，却与我们生存其间的大自然、与我们的同类越来越疏远。人们不禁要问：“难道我们追求现代化，就是为了换来人与人心隔壁垒，越来越像机器一样单调、呆板吗?”这种情况已经引起西方许多智者的担忧。德国思想家海德格尔就此提出一个有名的命题，叫做“人需要诗意的安居”。这成了许多发达国家的人们一心追求的理想境界。今天，中国各地(包括台港澳)茶文化的勃兴，恰好反映了中国人面对现代化的挑战和社会的急剧转型，迫切需要以某种具有示范作用和象征意义的文化符号，来平衡民族的心态，净化和静化人们的心灵。这个文化符号，可以是中国书画、可以是气功、可以是京剧，但是，我认为最广泛和最典型的，莫过于茶——茶是最容易诱发诗意的精灵，它与诗歌、音乐、书法、绘画等等艺术形式自古就是相通的，无论哪种艺术形式与茶融合，都可以平添几分诗意，使人脱俗近雅。

其五，茶是东方伦理和东方哲学的集中体现。中华文化非常重视将伦理道德渗透到人民的日常生活中去，而茶恰恰充当了这样的中介。日本茶道讲究“清、静、和、寂”;台湾的“紫藤茶艺”讲究“正、静、清、圆”;中国茶学大师庄晚芳教授提出的“中国茶德”讲究“廉、美、和、静”……这些精辟的概括，无不体现了东方人在茶身上所寄托的理想境界。它们是茶德，是伦理，同时也是哲学。周渝先生曾提出中国茶文化的最高境界是“天人合一”。而耐人寻味的是，国学大师钱穆先生在临终之前口述的一篇文章中，也提出“天人合一”的思想是中华文化对人类所作出的最大贡献，他说：“惟到最近始澈悟此一观念(指“天人合一”——引者注)实是整个中国传统文化思想之归宿处”，并强调“我深信中国文化对世界人类未来求生存之贡献，主要亦即在此。”钱先生的这段话被中外学术界称为他的“文化遗嘱”。我在这里并不想把茶文化抬举到不适当的高度，但是，在体现“天人合一”这一点上，茶的确是达到了中华传统文化的最高层次。
