长颈鹿的脖子是最引人注目的，它的脖子很长很长。雄长颈鹿要是抬起头来身高可达6米多高，体重可达900公斤左右，所以它是陆地上最高的一种动物。以前，长颈鹿的祖先的脖子并不长，是吃草的，因为后来，地面上的草越来越少，它们为了生存下去，就努力伸长了脖子吃大树上的叶子，渐渐的就变成了现在这个样子。

长颈鹿喜欢群居，一般十多头生活在一起，有的几十头在一起。生活在非洲野外的野生长颈鹿睡觉时是站着睡的，因为它们怕有凶敌进攻；而在动物园里的长颈鹿是趴着睡的，因为动物园里没有危险。

它们每个晚上只睡两个小时左右，非常短。长颈鹿的正常寿命大约是30年，它们一胎只生一个幼仔，刚生下来的幼仔不到一天就会走路了。

长颈鹿的舌头很长，约有四支铅笔那么长，颜色大多数是棕色加斑点的。虽然很长又不好看，却非常灵活，能把树叶中细小的刺给弄出来。它们走路的样子很难看，跑步去很快，每个小时能跑50公里的样子。长颈鹿的眼睛很特别，能看到身后的东西，而且视觉和听觉都很敏锐。它们的全身都有大大小小的像网一样的斑斑点点。长颈鹿的腿长，颈长，耳朵大，眼睛大，舌头长，走起路来慢条斯理的。
