他在西北的四年当中，大大小小的仗打了二十五次，身上受了八次箭伤，也为宋朝立了不少功劳。

宋仁宗对狄青很看重，除了提升他以外，还很想召见他。恰巧西夏军又侵犯渭州，狄青要去抗敌，不能去京城。宋仁宗只好叫人给狄青画了肖像，送到朝廷。

后来，北宋和西夏订立了和议，宋仁宗才把他调回京城，让他担任了马军副都指挥使。

狄青出身士兵。宋代为了防止士兵逃跑，在他们脸上刺上字，再涂上墨做记号，皮肤上留下青黑色的字迹，称做面涅。狄青当过小兵，脸上也留有面涅。

宋仁宗召见狄青，看到他脸上的面涅，觉得跟他如今的身份很不相称，便命他敷上药，把脸上的字迹除掉。

狄青不同意这样做。他回答说：“陛下不问我的出身低微，按照功劳提拔我，我才有今天这样的地位。这些字迹，我愿意留着，让士兵们看了，知道应该发奋向上。”

宋仁宗听了，非常赞赏，对他也更加看重了。

西夏战事平息后不多几年，南方又出现了一个割据政权。广源州酋长侬智高起兵反宋，他攻占邕(yong)州(今广西南宁)，建立大南国，自称仁惠皇帝，随后又一连攻下了九个州，还进犯广州。宋朝的许多守城官吏，吓得丢掉城池逃跑了。有些地方的百姓逃到山谷中避难，侬智高追到山谷中，放一把火，把避难者一齐烧死。

宋仁宗非常忧虑。狄青就上书朝廷，请求前去作战。第二天，狄青上朝，对宋仁宗说：“臣出身行伍，没有别的可以报答国家。我只要带领一支精锐骑兵，再调拨一些禁军，就可以平定侬智高。”

宋仁宗马上任命狄青为宣抚使，率领三万人马前去。第二年，狄青攻破了邕州。侬智高逃到大理，被杀死了。
