在会上首先由张剑司长宣读了国务院关于批准设立“全民健身日”的批复。在批复中国务院同意自2009年起，每年8月8日为“全民健身日”。其后刘鹏局长表示设立“全民健身日”是对北京奥运会成功举办这一中华民族百年梦圆的庄严时刻的最好纪念，意义深远。他披露说在征求意见的过程中，关于节日的名称，有多种建议，如“体育节”、“国家体育日”、“全民健身日”等。而绝大多数意见认为，节日的名称应当突出“全民健身”，“关于节日的时间，也有不同建议，比如6月10日、8月8日、春季或秋季适当的时间等。在 所有建议中，倾向于8月8日的最多。理由是，北京奥运会的成功举办，使全民对体育的关注上升到一个前所未有的高度，也为我国留下了宝贵的遗产。从扩大全民健身节日的社会影响，吸引更多的人们更广泛地参与体育健身活动，弘扬积极向上的奥林匹克精神，纪念北京奥运会成功举办的角度讲，8月8日最为理想。”刘鹏局长介绍说。

群体司盛志国司长表示总局将做好国家设立“全民健身日”的宣传工作并及早谋划“全民健身日”实施方案，使“全民健身日”真正成为“人民的节日”。
