窑洞内外温差是两个世界，夏天里面好像开了冷气，冬天感到暖洋洋的。窑洞又很安全，盗贼难以打洞进来，又不会起火。窑洞结实耐久，我有一次家访，学生家长告诉我，他这孔窑是明朝的老祖宗留下的，有四百多年历史了，三十年代中共陕北特委还在他窑里开过会。

窑洞基本分两类：土窑和石窑。土窑沿着土坡向里挖，地形合适，一排可以挖好几孔，父母、子女、家畜各得其窑，外面围一段短墙，就成了一个小院。我在铜川还住过一家窑洞旅馆，一孔大窑洞隔成许多小间，就成了客房。平地也能挖土窑。咸阳周陵中学是解放前创办的老学校，地处北塬，平展展一片。当年的创办人在平地上向下深挖，挖出一个凹字形大坑，再向四壁挖洞，形成一个四合院，一边土墙上开出踏级上下。这个四合院就成了他们的女生院，安全，实用，省料。

平地上的窑洞都是石窑。用三角形大石砌成桥洞模样，石块互相挤压，非常稳固。顶上填上厚厚的土层，四周砖砌，门面彩绘题词，很是美观。米脂中学的学生宿舍全是石窑，一排几十孔，上下五六层作梯田式排列，远远望去像是一座高楼。每一个班分到五六孔，班主任住当中，男女生分住两边。有些陕北老乡进了西安等大城市也要住窑洞，因为在陕北生活惯了，离不开火炕，所以西安市内也有一些石窑。

窑洞的结构比较简单，正面是门窗。以前都是纸糊的窗棂，现在也兴铝合金推拉窗了。火炉和炕是相连通的，两者是窑内的特有设置。煤炉烧陕北人叫做钢炭的块煤，火力很大，整天都有热开水。炕面用薄石板或土坯铺设，下面的火道呈蚊香形盘旋通过，再经窑壁通向窑顶的烟囱。炉子烧着，炕和墙总是温温的，被窝总是暖热的。所以客人一来，就请上炕暖和暖和。但是火力过大了，石板发烫，容易烤坏被褥。南方人到陕北总要这么经过一次才有体会。有经验的人外出时，在炕皮和芦席间常插进一根木棍把芦席抬起一点。窑内还可以向一边打一孔套窑，只开窗，没有门，扩大居住面积，提高私密性。窑和窑的隔墙厚度至少一米，很坚固。
