《史记》是我国第一部纪传体通史，是我国纪传体文学的开端。司马迁在《报任安书》中说其修史的总旨是“究天人之际，通古今之变，成一家之言”。于是，综合以前的史料，他把全书分为，十二本纪，三十世家，七十列传，十表，八书。本纪，叙述历代最高统治者帝王的政迹;世家，主要叙述贵族王侯的历史;列传，主要为各种不同类型，不同阶层人物的传记;表，是各个历史时期的大事表;书，是写文化、经济等的分类史。每个部分各自区别，却又相互联系，构成一个有机整体。

而为了全面反映人物的性格特征，《史记》采用了互现法。《史记》最主要的特点是“实录”，既要保持实录精神不可损，又要增强文章的严密性，使主题风格统一，则互现法是最好的补救方式。所谓互现法，就是旁见侧出法，即在一个人物的传记中着重描写他的主要特征，而其他方面的性格特征则放到别人的传记中显示。如《孝文本纪》刻划刘恒“专务以德化民”的至德天子形象，似乎白壁无暇。《张释之冯唐列传》刻划张、冯耿直不阿的大臣形象，专写汉文帝自私、残忍、严法和不重人才的几件事，既反衬了张、冯的正直高尚，也巧妙地实录了汉文帝的另一侧面。《高祖本纪》主要写刘邦带有神异色彩的发迹史，以及他的雄才大略，知人善任，许多弱点没有显示。然而在《项羽本纪》中借范增之口道出其贪财好色，《淮阴侯列传》表现他猜忌功臣。互现法，描绘了人物形象多方面的性格，或略或详，“功十而过一”的人物“本传晦之，而他传发之”，做到“隐而彰”;对于“过十而功一”的人物则“于传详之，于论赞复明之”，做到“直而宽”，由此，使得《史记》保持了实录精神。

此外，在入选体例的人物中，司马迁，人物选择带有奇采。本纪，记录帝王事迹，却选入了《项羽本纪》《吕后本纪》，二人并非帝王，但其历史作用和地位堪比帝王，于是选入，反倒是真正的如汉惠帝没有本纪;而世家讲述王侯贵族的历史，却选入了《陈涉世家》，肯定了陈涉的首难之功，把瓮牖绳枢之子，与诸侯王相比，可见出司马迁不平凡的价值取向。

记得有一天，家父与他的高足共同探讨《黄帝内经》中的一个句子：“形劳而不倦。”那位叔叔认为：“既然形劳，当然就会倦。形劳而不倦，不是自相矛盾了吗?”家父解释道：“形劳而不倦，可以理解为形劳神不倦。也就是说，身体虽然劳累，但精神不觉疲倦。比如，一个老农民下地劳动了整整一天，他可能会感到很辛苦，但他的内心是舒畅的，这不就是形劳神不倦吗?”
