And we cannot even use all of that, because some of it is in the form of icebergs and glaciers. Even worse, some of it has been polluted.

However, as things stand today, this small amount of fresh water, which is constantly being replaced by rainfall, is still enough for us. But our need for water is increasing rapidly-- almost day by day. Only if we take steps to deal with this problem now can we avoid a severe worldwide water shortage later on. A limited water supply would have a bad effect on agriculture and industry. Let me give you just one small exampie of how necessary water is to industry. Did you know that to produce a single ton of steel, it takes about 91, 000 liters of water?

We all have to learn how to stop wasting our precious water. One of the first steps we should take is to develop ways of reusing it. Experiments have already been done in this field, but only on a small scale. For us, the systems are as important as the spacecraft.

Pollution: An Increasing Concern in China It is reported that ten big cities in China are being ranked among the top twenty cities with the highest pollution index in the world. This means it is high time we did something to bring the situation under control.Many factors are contributing to the deteriorating situation: industrial wastes pumped into the air, the lakes and rivers; a increasing number of automobiles crowding into the streets; the widespread use of plastic bags etc. To my view, stiffer laws and regulations must be implemented to check pollution. 以前，小溪是家乡的人们用来洗衣服的地方，溪水清澈透明。但现在却被污染得变成青黑色的了，随手在水面一捞，不是死鱼、杂草，就是塑料袋。手上的鱼腥味很难洗掉。有时在深水处用手一捞，既不是死鱼，也不是杂草和塑料袋，而是被沙子埋在水底的臭石头和死螃蟹。

不懂得环境保护的人们是把小溪变成脏沟的元凶。由于人们乱砍乱伐，山上茂盛的树林变成了一排排树桩和倒下的枯树。河边的树也不知去向，泥沙没有了归所，就一点一点往溪里流，最终把小溪给埋了。环保意识淡薄的人们不懂得这个道理，仍置法网于不顾，把树林砍倒了一片又一片，连非常隐蔽的山洞也也漏了出来，树上的鸟窝也全军覆没。

听妈妈说，以前的和静县城并不是这样的，以前的街心公园绿苑曾是一栋栋又低又矮的平房，到处是垃圾堆，夏天苍蝇飞舞，蚊子乱撞，真是又臭又脏恶心极了，人们都不愿意到那里去;以前我们静县也没有步行街是又低又矮的平房。以前的市场是一个特别拥挤的地方，这里物品不太丰富，每当人们走过这里时，都有一种难闻的气味，人们走过这里总是掩着鼻子，捂着嘴巴，皱着眉头;以前的广场是一片又低又矮的平房，春天风一刮尘土飞扬，夏天一下雨一片泥泞，人过都过不去，而且活动的设施也少得可怜。
