唐代大诗人杜甫说：“读书破万卷，下笔如有神。”这一“经验之谈”因为符合人们的朴素、直观的印象，所以历来被奉为圭臬。然而这种看法正因为带有朴素、直观的性质，所以不完全符合思维科学。

当然，要想写出好文章，多多读书以及在生活实践中积累经验都是非常必要的。但是也应该看到，为了进行新的工作，从事新的创造，从书本上得来的知识就只能作为原料来运用。任何书本知识都不能直接变为简报、讲稿、文艺创作或其他任何文章（除非抄袭），这就如同木料不会自动变为家具一样。

再就专业特殊能力的锻炼来说，“读书破万卷”只是突出地锻炼了记忆力，而并未强调对感受、联想、想像、思维等能力的锻炼，因此也就没有准确而充分地揭示具有综合性的专业特殊能力的养成途径。在一般的读书过程中，大脑各种功能的发动大都是无意的、自发的；只有在目标明确的专业创造和专业写作过程中，为了有效地达到目的，这些功能才非拧成一股绳不可。所以，具有综合性的创造能力主要是在创造的实践中养成；具有综合性的写作能力也主要是在写作实践中养成。不经过创造与写作的直接实践，而认为只要“读书破万卷”，就能“下笔如有神”，那是不可能的。杜甫七岁就写了歌咏凤凰的诗，直到晚年也还是“他乡阅迟暮，不敢废诗篇”，可见他主要是在作诗的实践中成为大诗人的。他说“读书破万卷”，只是强调了一个“必要条件”，我们决不可以把任何一个“必要条件”当作“充分条件”来看。

事实上，知识原料加文字表达还不能成为文章。因为任何一个原料要变为一项特定写作任务中的实际内容，还需要经过提炼加工。

在任何创造性的思维过程中，对各种客观事物的反映（即知识经验）进行联系与反联系的能力总是要起极为重要的作用；前者主绵阳南山中学实验学校高2016届一诊模拟考试语文试题在立新，后者主在破旧，二者又总是难分难解地互相依存与制约。然而能够结出创新之果的联系与反联系却并不是一望而知、一思即悟的。

就联系而言，在写作中，富于新意的内容无不表现了知识经验之间的联系。例如归纳论证需要举例，有的人看别人的文章，总觉得其中所举的例子是自己早已熟知的，可是在他自己写作的时候，却不善于在这些例子中归纳新意并加以论证。再说到反联系，也同样要对现成的知识经验进行深思熟虑，才能在早已被人公认的联系中打进楔子，破除习以为常的误解。总之，现成的知

识经验总要经过种种分析综合、提炼加工，才能被有效地应用于新的创造或新的写作。

一般的读书虽然也要开动脑筋，但因为没有明确的目的和任务的催逼，所以即使有一些新的想法也只是自然出现，而不需要作更加自觉的努力，去扩大和加深新的想法，使之成为具有一定完整性的创造。而在明确的创造目的和艰难的写作任务催逼下，开动脑筋才有一定的方向，脑力劳动才有深度和强度；而且在把思考的结果表现为文字时，还要求内容更为精密，表达更为准确。这种锻炼显然不是看了书想一想所能够比拟。所以光是一般地强调积累知识和开动脑筋，还不足以使创造能力、写作能力得到实际的提高。
