从懂事起，我就在养成了两个值得自豪的好习惯，它们一直伴着我成长。

第一个习惯是节约。记得我刚刚学会吃饭时，不管碗里饭多饭少，我总习惯于剩下一些，妈妈怎么要我全吃掉我也不理会。妈妈苦口婆心地教我背诵“谁知盘中餐，粒粒皆辛苦”的诗句，可我并不明白诗句的含义。有一次，妈妈带我到乡下亲戚家，妈妈帮亲戚种了整整一天的田。吃晚饭时，我看到妈妈的手上起了大大的血泡，心疼得哭了。妈妈说：“这回，你知道种粮食很辛苦了吧?妈妈只种了一天田就这么辛苦，那些农民可天天都这么辛苦啊!”这一下，我真正明白了妈妈的苦心，从此，我再也不浪费食物了。上学后，我在老师的教诲下懂得，我们的祖国还不富裕，资源虽多却因为浪费而日益减少。因此我们不仅要爱惜粮食，更要爱惜其他资源，从小树立节约的意识，养成勤俭节约的好习惯。每次做作业，我的作业本总是正反都写;每次外出，我总是记着关灯;用水时我也及时关掉水龙头，尽量节约每一滴水。我想：只要大家都养成节约的好习惯，我们的祖国就会越来越美好，也越来越富裕!

我的第二个好习惯是勤奋努力。在我家，挂着一副发明家爱迪生的名言：“天才等于1%的天赋加上99%的汗水。”我从小看着这句名言成大，并养成了勤奋的好习惯。虽然我今年才**岁，但我学钢琴已有五年了。刚开始弹奏时，觉得既枯燥无味又辛苦，真想放弃，可是因为有了勤奋这一好习惯，我每天自觉坚持弹奏。渐渐地，我指尖流出的琴声越来越动听，有时像顽皮的精灵，有时像潺潺的流水，又有时像奔腾的万马千军……弹奏让我快乐，弹奏也为我带来荣誉!去年我获得了星海杯业余钢琴比赛湖北赛区一等奖，今年老师要为我在咸宁开一个个人钢琴演奏会，这在咸宁可是第一人呢!这都是勤奋的结果啊!虽然弹琴占去了我大部分时间，可我从没有放松过文化课的学习。上课我用心听讲，放学做好作业，预习、复习，每一样我都认真完成，由于我勤奋刻苦地学习，我的成绩一直名列前茅!

第七天，9月3日，李鸿章临行前接见纽约华商。接受他们敬献礼品并赠送驻节酒店之女侍们鲜花球，送茶叶及照片给酒店经理，给佣役小费每人十美元(在当时十分慷慨)。

今天，我讲话的题目是《勿忘国耻，立志成才》!

今年，十二届全国人大常委会第七次会议表决通过了将12月13日确定为南京大屠杀死难者国家公祭日的决定。

77年前的12月13日，一个比今天还要冷的日子。那一天日军的炮火轰开了南京的大门，灭绝人性的侵略者用机枪扫射、活埋、把人当做刺杀的靶子，对手无寸铁的中国平民进行了长达六周的惨绝人寰的大规模屠杀。他们以极其残忍的手段屠杀了我30万余同胞!惨叫四起，撕心裂肺;尸骸遍地，触目惊心。

这是历史上屈辱的一天，这是让我们中国人心痛的日子，这是一段永远无法让中国人忘却的国耻。

国家公祭，既是对自己死难同胞灵魂的安抚，也是对那些犯罪者的警示，警告这个罪孽深重又不愿悔改的邻国，更是告诫我们的国民，保持清醒状态，不要有片刻的忘却与麻木，绝不能忘却历史、忘却苦难。这不是在宣泄情绪，不是在倡导民族复仇，而是提醒我们每一个人，我们是一个整体，我们在共同悲痛。

少年强，则国强;少年弱，则国弱。“前事不忘，后事之师”，南京大屠杀告诉我们一个道理：落后就要挨打。但我们还痛心的发现在我们身边，我们还能够看到少数麻木不仁的同学，整天没有奋斗目标，没有上进心，不认真学习，不遵守纪律，不懂得孝敬父母，甚至整天游手好闲，惹是生非。我要问这些同学，你们这样混迹下去，对得起含辛茹苦，翘首盼望你成人成才的父母和老师吗?对得起自己的良心吗?对得起中国少年这四个字吗?你们能撑起中国的脊梁吗?

“中国梦，我的梦”，我们每个人都要不断实现自我梦想，共筑中国梦。作为我们每一个学生，我们就要从做好学生这个根本出发，“明志笃学”珍惜每一天，为自己的理想和目标不懈努力，坚持奋斗。我们要自觉遵守“八礼四仪”，养成良好的学习、生活习惯和文明礼仪习惯。遵守规章制度，尊敬老师，刻苦学习，热爱劳动，关心他人，善于合作，以优异的成绩向30万死难者保证，向全世界庄严宣告，作为中国当代青年学生，我行，我们行!

每当披着一身星光走向校园，我总在叩问自己：你热爱教育么？不管寒来还是暑往。每当带着烦恼走进教室，我总在叩问自己：你热爱这群孩子么？不管聪慧还是无知。每当带着一身疲惫走进空荡荡的家，我总在叩问自己：这就是教师的生活么？不管上班还是假日。这时，一位老教师的话总会回响在耳畔：教师是个良心活。

一路走来，我又认识了孔子的“师者为师亦为范,学高为师,德高为范。”认识了韩愈的“师者，所以传道、授业、解惑者也。”认识了陶行知的“你的教鞭下有瓦特,你的冷眼里有牛顿,你的讥笑中有爱迪生。”认识了林崇德教授的“疼爱自己的孩子是本能，疼爱别人的孩子是神圣。”认识了当代作家贾平凹（wā）的“百无聊赖何为教，一事无成怎做授？”。从叶圣陶到吕叔相，从魏书生到余映朝，从夸美纽斯到苏霍姆林斯基，从杜威到马卡连柯，无一不诠释了“没有爱就没有教育，没有高尚的师德就无法成为一个优秀的教师。”

星河耿耿，银汉迢迢，岁月的长河，千回百转，千淘万漉，使一颗颗明珠浮出了水面，他们的异彩流光，道德风范，照亮了实验中学发展的历程，为实验中学人留下了宝贵的精神财富。爱生如子的汤晓玉老师，带病上课的张朝理老师，曾经晕倒在讲台的权诠主任，张爱琴老师，还有一生执着的陈美容老师、段凤英老师。是他们用爱心撑起了一片蓝天，用师德铸就了实验中学的辉煌。

敬爱的老师，亲爱的同学们：你们好!在这金秋送爽的季节，我们迎来了新的学期，同时也迎来了学校一年一度的少先队大队干部竞选活动。我是来自五(三)班的中队长周华昊，今天有幸参加学校大队干部的竞选，我的心情无比激动，感到非常自豪。

在过去担任中队干部的四年里，我勤奋学习，做事认真，尊敬师长，团结同学，热爱班级，常常受到老师和同学们的夸奖，连续两年被评为校级“三好学生”。我品学兼优，爱好广泛，我的作文多次作为范文在班级或学校交流，还在《中国少年先锋报》上发表，绘画作品获重庆市小学生“课堂内外”杯一等奖，国际象棋获重庆市二等奖，参加“重庆市小学生说普通话、写规范字”知识竞赛两次获二等奖。我还参加了全国“10岁小小记者看香港”选拔活动，在10万名参赛选手中脱颖而出，被《中国少年报》小灵通记者团录取，并于2007年7月代表中国大陆少年儿童到香港参加了为期7天的交流活动，与香港小朋友同台演出，为国家和学校争得了荣誉。

这次我竞选的岗位是大队部学习委员。假如我能当选，我将在大队辅导员的指导下，树立“为同学们服务”的思想，严于律己，以身作则，用一颗纯洁的心和实际行动，来感染同学们，出色地完成学校和大队部交给我的任务，认真搞好少先队的各项工作，做一个名副其实的好干部。

假如我落选了，我绝不灰心。这说明自己离大队干部的标准还有一定的差距，我要取长补短，不断完善自己，争取参加下次的竞选。

Now, our college students have many ways to study except listen the teacher said, we can scan the knowledge on web, we can download the electronic edition of the textbook, if necessary, we even can listen other college’s teacher’s class on the internet. All of these depend on the development of internet; it makes our study in college more efficient, more interesting, and quick.

The internet brought us so many benefits, does it mans it haven’t any disadvantageExactly not, it is so obvious that so many college students have damage for it. There is a example, a seiner high school student was eolled by Tsinghua University in a high scores but after 1year he was dropped out by the university, whyThe reason is sample, after he stepped into college he began high on or suspected to addicted to web game, he started to be truant, violate the college rules, finally, he failed many courses, and the university didn’t forgive him anymore. There are lots of other stories like this one, because of internet, college students had to give up their college life. What makes these unhappy things happenedIn my opinion, the main reason is that under the Chinese education system, every student is strictly surprised by their parent’s, the teachers and school before college entrance examination, they have little freedom. After they go to the college, the parents left them alone, the teachers started to give them enough belief, so they can do everything they want include surfing the internet without control

Even so we still .shouldn’t give up our right study life, we shouldn’t forget the reason we spend extra 4 years in college: we need more useful knowledge, so that we can have a good job, a good future.

说起祖国，我总会有一种自豪感。因为我的祖国是——中国。

五千年的风雨沧桑，铸造了不朽的华夏文明。血脉的代代传承，为每一个炎黄子孙在骨子里便刻印上了中国的印记。

滔滔黄河，滚滚长江，哺育了一代又一代的中华儿女。在这片古老而又神奇的土地之上，中国人一直用自己的劳动与智慧书写着传奇。从女娲补天、夸父逐日的神话传说开始，中华民族便登上了历史的舞台；紧接着，三皇定伦、五帝治世，中国先民凭借着自己的智慧与劳动告别了原始社会，走进了最初的人类文明时代；在之后，二十四朝风和雨，各有千秋史自明，中国曾一度成为世界的中心，世界的目光也曾一直聚集在中国这条巨龙身上。

万里河山秀色美，祖国风光无限好。三山五岳，四海五湖，茫茫草原，涛涛林海，荒漠戈壁，万里平川，华夏大地之上，处处都是迷人风光，流连其中，如梦如醉，感叹自然之神奇，欣喜祖国山河之壮阔。这就是中国大地，这就是我们世世代代所居住的地方，我们所深深爱着的地方。

中国，永远是每一个华夏儿女心中的羁绊。古往今来，无数仁人志士均以自己的实际行动诠释了爱国的含义。霍去病曾言：“匈奴未灭，何以为家？”因此，他将自己的一生献给了保家卫国的事业；苏武北海牧羊二十余载，不改初心，时刻牢记自己乃是汉朝臣民；岳飞精忠报国，大破金贼，收复失地；文天祥高唱“人生自古谁无死，留取丹心照汗青”慷慨就义；郑成功收复台湾，保我国土完整；林则徐“虎门销烟”，“睁眼看世界”；关天培浴血奋战，为国流尽最后一滴血；孙中山等革命党人为中国命运而不懈奋斗；全民族共同联合“大抗战”等等……这些都是优秀的中华儿女们为国家所做出的努力，我们不应该忘记他们，他们也定将被后人所铭记。而他们所做的这一切，只因为他们都是炎黄儿女，他们都有着一颗中国心。

历史的巨轮不断向前行进，新时代的步伐飞跃前进。中国，这个古老的国度也定将要顺应着历史的潮流，不断地往前走下去，去创造新的辉煌，去向世界展现出华夏的风采！

老师们，同学们，大家好，我们是来自初一九班的张影和李雨亭，今天我演讲的题目是“冬季长跑好处多”。

俗话说“冬训吃一年”，这是体育业内人非常重视的训练阶段。在民间利用寒冷的冬天进行长跑活动更是人们喜闻乐见的体育项目。为了让同学们更多的掌握长跑的知识，更好的参加长跑运动，我们在此向同学们介绍冬季长跑的有关知识。

通过长跑可以调节神经中枢的兴奋与抑制合理的交替转换，避免神经思维中枢紧张过度，消除大脑的疲劳，提高学习效益，提高记忆力；在低温下长跑可以刺激、激活肌体的保护性反应，调节大脑体温中枢的功能；长跑还可以促进血液循环，加速脑部的血量，供给大脑更多的氧和营养物质，使大脑清醒，思维能力敏捷，神经系统功能的改善，可以提高和完善对各器官、系统的控制和调节能力。

长跑运动可以增强心脏肌肉收缩的力量，提高血液中红血球携带氧的能力，可以使血管粗壮有弹性，可以激活淋巴细胞提高人体的免疫功能。在长跑运动时由于需求氧的量成倍增多，呼吸次数及深度也随之增加，经常进行长跑就能有效的提高呼吸肌力量，加大肺泡的通气量，从而提高了肺活量。

人体的运动系统是由骨骼、关节、肌肉组成，经常参加长跑运动，提高关节的灵活性；有效的提高肌肉的力量和耐力。

冬季长跑可以重新塑造完美体形、体态长跑属于有氧代谢运动，在运动中需要大量的氧和营养物质来供给人体运动的需要，在运动中多余的脂肪被消耗掉就能使得原本臃肿肥胖的体形得到改善，达到重新塑造体形的效果。

在冬季长跑中由于受到季节温度和环境的影响会遇到很多的困难，如天气寒冷，空气干燥都是对人在跑步时形成的自然困难因素，在这样的环境中锻炼一方面在锻炼体质，另一方面也是对人的意志品质的锻炼。

冬季长跑是一项锻炼身体的好运动，我们只有采用科学的方法进行锻炼，才能得到良好的锻炼效果。希望广大同学积极行动起来，投身到冬季长跑活动中来。

如若有人问五四运动的精神是什么?大概的答词必然是爱国救国。我以为五四运动的发生，是受了日本和本国政府的两种压逼而成的，自然不能说不是爱国运动。但是我们的爱国运动，远史不必说，即以近代而论，前清末年，也曾发生过爱国运动，而且上海有爱国学社和爱国女学校。十年前就有标榜爱国主义的根据运动。何以社会上对于五四运动无论是赞美、反对或不满足，都有一种新的和前者爱国运动不同的感想呢?他们所以感想不同的缘故，是五四运动的精神，确比前此爱国运动有不同的地方。这不同的地方，就是五四运动特有的精神。这种精神就是：(一)直接行动;(二)牺牲精神。直接行动，就是人民对于社会国家的黑暗，由人民直接行动，加以制裁，不诉诸法律，不利用特殊势力，不依赖代表。因为法律是强权的护持，特殊势力是民权的仇敌，代议员是欺骗者，决不能代表公众的意见。清末革命的时候，人人都以为从此安宁了，不料袁世凯秉政结果，反而不好。袁世凯死的时候，人人又以为从此可以安宁了，不料现在的段祺瑞、徐世昌执政，国事更加不好。这个时候，中国人因为对于各方面的失望，大有坐以待毙的现象。自从德国大败俄国革命以后，世界上的人思想多一变。于是，中国人也受了两个教训：一是无论南北，凡军阀都不应当存在;一是人民有直接行动的希望。五四运动遂应运而生。一般工商界所以信仰学生，所以对于五四运动有新的和前次爱国运动不同的感想，就是因为学生运动是直接行动，不是依赖特殊势力和代议员的卑劣运动呵!中国人最大的病根，是人人都想用很小的努力牺牲，得很大的效果。这病不改，中国永远没有希望。社会上对于五四运动，与以前的爱国运动的感想不同，也是因为有无牺牲的精神的缘故。然而我以为五四运动的结果，还不甚好。为什么呢?因为牺牲大而得结果小，才是好现象。此时学生牺牲的精神，若不如去年，而希望效果，却还要比去年的大，那更不是好的现象了。以上这两种精神，就是五四运动重要的精神。我希望诸君努力发挥这两种精神，不但特殊势力和代议员不是好东西，就是工商界也不可依赖。不但工商界不可依赖，就是学界的份子好朋友，都不可依赖。最后只有自己可靠，只好依赖自己!

站在国旗下，举目仰望那高高飘扬的红旗，眼前顿时展现出一幅雄鸡傲立的画面——我们伟大祖国的版图。心中不禁感想万千，每当这个时刻，我们都沉浸在雄壮的国歌声中，庄重而严肃的向祖国，向国旗默默许下自己的志愿。 新一代的我们身上担着千斤重担，祖国的经济尚不发达，人口众多，人均国民生产总值还比较低，不能与发达国家相比美。但我们的祖国物资丰富，地大物博，有巨大的潜力，而且祖国拥有我们这些要开辟新时代走向未来的接班人，所以我们可以大声对世界说：“我们的祖国无比富有，我们就是祖国最宝贵的财富。”

众所周知，世界杯已经持续五天了，中国队虽然没有进入世界杯，但我们并没有就因此而放弃足球队事业的热爱，因为我们执著，我们对中国足球有信心，球迷永远都不会对足球健将们说放弃!因为祖国还拥有我们，我们有理想、有抱负、有能力。我们正值青春年华，充满智慧和力量，我们深信：今日的梦想，必然成为明日的现实，终有一天，中国足球将会“大鹏一日同风起，扶摇直上几万里。”中国足球将冲出亚洲，令全世界刮目相看。 不仅足球如此，祖国的建设也需要我们的努力，我们期待着中国以展新的巨人形象屹立于世界东方，这是中华民族千百年来的夙愿，也是我们为之奋斗的理想，要实现这美好的理想，知识技术是纽带桥梁。

大家好!首先感谢大家的支持与学校提供这次机会，使我能参与竞争，一展自己的抱负。今天我来参与竞选的目的只有一个：一切为大家，能为大家谋利益。我自信在同学们的帮助下，我能胜任这项工作，正由于这种内驱力，当我走向这个讲台的时候，我感到信心百倍。

我认为自己很适合担任学生会主席。首先我热爱我的工作，算上小学的话，十年学生干部“工龄”已不算短了，这使我有了相当的管理经验、领导能力。活泼开朗、兴趣广泛的我积极参加并组织开展各项活动，在活动中尽情施展自己的唱歌、跳舞、弹钢琴及演讲的才能，取得了如演讲比赛第一、英语朗诵、阅读竞赛第一等好成绩，激励着我不断向前;主持也是我不懈的追求，从高一入学军训联欢会到主持省武高电视台节目，及后来的首届英语节，大大小小的活动参加了不少，是省武高这方热土给我提供了机会，使我如鱼得水，不断锻炼、充实着自己。此外，在活动过程中，我学习上也丝毫没有松懈，成绩现已跻身年级前茅，我认为我有着足够的时间和精力在学习之余开展活动。

假如我当选，我将进一步加强自身修养，努力提高和完善自身的素质，我将时时要求自己“待人正直、公正办事”;要求自己“严于律己、宽以待人”;要求自己“乐于助人、尊老爱幼”等等，总之，我要力争让学生会主席的职责与个人的思想品格同时到位。

假如我就任此届学生会主席，我的第一件事就是召集我的内阁部长们举行第一次全体内阁会议，全面地听取他们的意见与建议，下放权力，实行承包责任制。我们将自始至终地遵循“一切为大家”的原则。在就职期间，我们将在有限的条件下，办我们自己的电视台、广播站，建立必要的管理制度，设立师生信箱。我们将定期举行各种形式的体育友谊比赛，使爱好体育的英雄有用武之地。爱好文艺的，校艺术团在欢迎你，我们将举办自己的艺术节、中秋、圣诞大联欢。如有条件来个校园形象大使活动也不错，还有书画会、文学社、中学生论坛、社会实践(包括大家感兴趣的郊游活动)……总之，我们每个人都能在学生会找到自己的位置，我们的课余生活绝对能够丰富多彩!我们将与风华正茂的同学们在一起，指点江山，发出我们青春的呼喊!我们将努力使学生会成为学校领导与学生之间的一座沟通心灵的桥梁，成为师生之间的纽带，成为敢于反映广大学生意见要求，维护学生正当权益的组织，新的学生会将不再是徒有虚名的摆设，而是有所作为的名副其实的存在!

The International Childrens Day (ICD) is celebrated in numerous countries, usually (but not always) on June 1 each year.

The ICD had its origin in the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in Geneva, Switzerland in 1925. It is not clear as to why June 1 was chosen as the ICD: one theory has it that the Chinese consul-general in San Francisco (USA) gathered a number of Chinese orphans to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in 1925, which happened to be on June 1 that year, and also coincided with the conference in Geneva.

June 1 has since been observed as the ICD by numerous countries, especially by Communist countries; in the Western world the ICD is usually celebrated on other days of the year (if at all)， and there is often little public awareness about these celebrations. (See the section on Germany below for further discussions.) Consequently there is sometimes a misperception that June 1 as the ICD was a Communist invention. Nonetheless, in recent years even some groups within the United States started observing the ICD on June 1.

People travel by plane, by train, by ship, by bus. For me, the best way of traveling on a summer vacation is to go on foot.

When I use my feet and walk on a grass covered path along a river or among the hills I feel detached from the noise of the city and closer to the nature. And when I travel on foot I get more freedom. I can plan my own schedule. I can choose my own route. I can stop where I like. And I can see things and people that I might miss if I travel on a train or on a bus.

It’s also not bad to travel by train. Enjoy the scenery out of the train on the way, just look around here and there , maybe you can get some new friends in this narrow but long carriage. Certainly you’d better choose the different path when you return back from the place of interest so that you can make your eyes full of the landscape of interest on the way and never need to revisit the once familiar place. How far-flung and galland the rivers and mountains in our homeland are! There are still too many places we can go.

Advantages of Travel By traveling we can enjoy the beautiful scenery in different places. We will see with our own eyes many places read of in books, and visit some famous cities and scenic spots. We can get ideas of the conditions and customs of other people, taste different foods and special local flavour if we like. In this way, we can understand how differently other people live.

Travel will not only help us to gain knowledge of geography and history and other knowledge, which will arouse our deep love for our motherland, but also will help us keep healthy and make us less narrow-minded. Travel does benefit us both mentally and physically. With all these advantages of travel, it is no wonder that travel has now become more popular .

First of all, travel can widen our knowledge of geography, the knowledge of customs, cultures and lifestyles of different places and countries. Secondly, we can make friends and practice a foreign language through travelling. Finally, travel is the best way of pastime. We can enjoy eating various foods and seeing beautiful sceneries.

I am honored to address you tonight. On behalf of the graduating masters and doctoral students of Washington Universitys School of Engineering and Applied Science, I would like to thank all the parents, spouses, families, and friends who encouraged and supported us as we worked towards our graduate degrees. I would especially like to thank my own family, eight members of which are in the audience today. I would also like to thank all of the department secretaries and other engineering school staff members who always seemed to be there when confused graduate students needed help. And finally I would like to thank the Washington University faculty members who served as our instructors, mentors, and friends.

As I think back on the seven-and-a-half years I spent at Washington University, my mind is filled with memories, happy, sad, frustrating, and even humorous.

Tonight I would like to share with you some of the memories that I take with me as I leave Washington University.

I take with me the memory of my office on the fourth floor of Lopata Hall - the room at the end of the hallway that was too hot in summer, too cold in winter, and always too far away from the womens restroom. The window was my offices best feature. Were it not for the physics building across the way, it would have afforded me a clear view of the arch. But instead I got a view of the roof of the physics building. I also had a view of one corner of the roof of Urbauer Hall, which seemed to be a favorite perch for various species of birds who alternately won perching rights for several weeks at a time. And I had a nice view of the physics courtyard, noteworthy as a good place for watching people run their dogs. Its amazing how fascinating these views became the longer I worked on my dissertation. But my favorite view was of a nearby oak tree. From my fourth-floor vantage point I had a rather intimate view of the tree and the various birds and squirrels that inhabit it. Occasionally a bird would land on my window sill, which usually had the effect of startling both of us.

I take with me the memory of two young professors who passed away while I was a graduate student. Anne Johnstone, the only female professor from whom I took a course in the engineering school, and Bob Durr, a political science professor and a member of my dissertation committee, both lost brave battles with cancer. I remember them fondly.

I take with me the memory of failing the first exam in one of the first engineering courses I took as an undergraduate. I remember thinking the course was just too hard for me and that I would never be able to pass it. So I went to talk to the professor, ready to drop the class. And he told me not to give up, he told me I could succeed in his class. For reasons that seemed completely ludicrous at the time, he said he had faith in me. And after that my grades in the class slowly improved, and I ended the semester with an A on the final exam. I remember how motivational it was to know that someone believed in me.

I take with me memories of the midwestern friendliness that so surprised me when I arrived in St. Louis 8 years ago. Since moving to New Jersey, I am sad to say, nobody has asked me where I went to high school.

I take with me the memory of the short-lived computer science graduate student social committee lunches. The idea was that groups of CS grad students were supposed to take turns cooking a monthly lunch. But after one grad student prepared a pot of chicken that poisoned almost the entire CS grad student population and one unlucky faculty member in one fell swoop, there wasnt much enthusiasm for having more lunches.

I take with me the memory of a more successful graduate student effort, the establishment of the Association of Graduate Engineering Students, known as AGES. Started by a handful of engineering graduate students because we needed a way to elect representatives to a campus-wide graduate student government, AGES soon grew into an organization that now sponsors a wide variety of activities and has been instrumental in addressing a number of engineering graduate student concerns.

I take with me the memory of an Engineering and Policy department that once had flourishing programs for full-time undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students.

I take with me memories of the 1992 U.S. Presidential debate. Eager to get involved in all the excitement I volunteered to help wherever needed. I remember spending several days in the makeshift debate HQ giving out-of-town reporters directions to the athletic complex. I remember being thrilled to get assigned the job of collecting film from the photographers in the debate hall during the debate. And I remember the disappointment of drawing the shortest straw among the student volunteers and being the one who had to take the film out of the debate hall and down to the dark room five minutes into the debate - with no chance to re-enter the debate hall after I left.

I take with me memories of university holidays which never seemed to apply to graduate students. I remember spending many a fall break and Presidents Day holiday with my fellow grad students in all day meetings brought to us by the computer science department.

I take with me memories of exams that seemed designed more to test endurance and perseverance than mastery of the subject matter. I managed to escape taking any classes that featured infamous 24-hour-take-home exams, but remember the suffering of my less fortunate colleagues. And what doctoral student could forget the pain and suffering one must endure to survive the qualifying exams?

I take with me the memory of the seven-minute rule, which always seemed to be an acceptable excuse for being ten minutes late for anything on campus, but which doesnt seem to apply anywhere else I go.

I take with me the memory of Friday afternoon ACM happy hours, known not for kegs of beer, but rather bowls of rainbow sherbet punch. Over the several years that I attended these happy hours they enjoyed varying degrees of popularity, often proportional to the quality and quantity of the accompanying refreshments - but there was always the rainbow sherbert punch.

I take with me memories of purple parking permits, the West Campus shuttle, checking my pendaflex, over-due library books, trying to print from cec, lunches on Delmar, friends who slept in their offices, miniature golf in Lopata Hall, The Greenway Talk, division III basketball, and trying to convince Dean Russel that yet another engineering school rule should be changed.

Finally, I would like to conclude, not with a memory, but with some advice. What would a graduation speech be without a little advice, right? Anyway, this advice comes in the form of a verse delivered to the 1977 graduating class of Lake Forest College by Theodore Seuss Geisel, better known to the world as Dr. Seuss - Heres how it goes:

My uncle ordered popovers

from the restaurants bill of fare.

And when they were served,

he regarded them

with a penetrating stare . . .

Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom

as he sat there on that chair:

"To eat these things,"

said my uncle,

"you must excercise great care.

You may swallow down whats solid . . .

BUT . . .

you must spit out the air!"

And . . .

as you partake of the worlds bill of fare,

thats darned good advice to follow.

Do a lot of spitting out the hot air.

And be careful what you swallow.

Good morning teachers and fellow students. today we would like to introduce a few favorite books to you.

my favorite book is (italian: cuore). this is a diary written by an italian boy enrico. the diary is about his life and study. it included various touching stories that happened around enrico, the mottos taught by his parents, as well as the wonderful ten "monthly" stories told by his teacher during the class. every word in the chapter describes the word "love". from patriotism to friendship, and to the love between parents and child -- really touching.

this novel taught me how to love, and how to learn from love. i really like this book very much. how about you? what is your favorite book?

my favorite book is . have you read it before?

oh, i haven’t read this book before. what is it about?

well, it is a story of a rich girl who maintained her noble character after the bankruptcy of her father. the story is happy ending.

can you tell us why you love this book so much?

sure. it is because the story taught us to be brave and to face the challenges and difficulties with courage. i am deeply impressed by the strength and perseverance of the little prince in the story. i have decided to learn from her from now on.

oh i see, the story sounds very good. i cannot wait to read this book as well.
