清洁的空气是人们赖以生存的必要物质基础，一个成人平均每天要呼吸15立方米空气，人们若呼吸了严重污染的空气，无疑对健康是有害的。因此，研究空气污染的影响，认识清洁空气的价值是一个十分复杂的前沿科研课题。而儿童处于生长发育阶段，是对外界空气污染最敏感人群，研究空气污染对儿童的影响更易获得有价值的结果。基于此，以中国工程院院士、中国环境监测总站总工魏复盛为中方首席科学家的中美科技合作项目一一空气污染对人体呼吸健康的影响研究，在广州、武汉、兰州、重庆等城市和郊区分别选点，对空气中直径2.5微米颗粒物进行调查、监测，取得8196份调查问卷，测试儿童肺功能约15000人次，包括环境监测数据，共获得了约300万个数据，经过统计分析，对空气污染对人体呼吸系统健康(特别是儿童)的影响有了定量化的认识。研究结果证实，对人体健康的影响以空气中细小颗粒物污染最为严重(我国有2/3的城市超标)，其次是二氧化硫污染(我国有1/3的城市超标)，氮氧化物污染的影响相对较弱。可以说，细小颗粒物(可吸入颗粒物)是人体健康的第一杀手。据专家介绍，颗粒物上附着的有毒重金属、酸性氧化物与土壤相比富集几百倍、几千倍，甚至上万倍，并可在空气中飘浮多达几十天，有害物质随可吸入颗粒物进人体肺部，并有可能透过肺泡进入血液，直接危害人体健康。

近日，这项历时8年的研究成果在京通过了由国家环保总局主持的专家鉴定。专家们认为，这一研究成果对于我们认识清洁空气的重要性、提高公众及领导层的环保意识有着重要意义。研究成果的数据为国家空气环境立法、制定、修订空气质量标准、排放标准及空气污染治理政策提供了科学依据。

Throughout history man has changed his physical environment in order to improve his way of life. With the tools of technology he has altered many physical features of the earth. He has transformed woodlands and prairies into farms and made lakes and reserviors out of rivers for irrigation purposes or hydroelectric power. Man has also modified the face of the earth by draining marshes and cutting through mountains to build roads and railways.

However, mans changes to the physical environment have not always had beneficial results. Today, pollution of the air and water is an increasing danger to the health of the planet. Each day thousands of tons of gases come out of the exhausts of motor vehicles. Smoke from factories pollutes the air of industrialized areas and the surrounding areas of the countryside. Where is my home?

Some fish are forced to leave polluted water and are flying in the sky. But unfortunately, air is also so polluted that they have to wear masks. Each of them is crying, “Where is my home?” What a terrible sight!
