中国历出现的“三武灭佛”事件，就是政府为了社会安定而采用暴力手段拆除了庙宇、道观。结果使得社会安定，国祚绵延。由此可见，一旦宗教信仰侵占了过多的社会资源，反而可能成为社会发展的障碍。信仰之所以成为信仰，便在于其催人向善，若是仅仅着眼于礼神之地、礼神之人、礼神之物的奢华，恐怕就是舍本逐末了……

许多宗教信仰的另一弊端就在于它的迷惑性。宗教可以给身处绝境中的人以希望，但同时也很容易被别有用心的人利用。中国的佛、儒、道三教都曾被历代统治者用作钳制思想的工具，其作用说到底就是愚民。佛教教人相信因果论，寄希望于来世;儒教教人忠君，做一世的顺民;道教则教百姓安于现状，安贫乐道。欧洲的宗教也不例外，从号称“圣战”的十字军东征到“赎罪券”盛行，宗教领袖总是依靠自己的宗教地位来聚敛财富。前者导致了百姓安于现状，社会停滞不前;后者则导致了社会的动荡，百姓的贫困。这样的信仰，就不是“催人向善”，而是“致人愚昧”了。
