In the U.S., mother’s day is a holiday celebrated on the second sunday in May. It is a day when children honor their mothers with cards, gifts, and flowers. It was first observed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1907. Long before that, there were days honoring mothers even in ancient Greece. In those days, however, it was Rhea, the mother of the gods who was given honor.

Later, in the 1600s, in England there was an annual observance called "Mothering Sunday". It was celebrated during June, on the fourth sunday. On Mothering Sunday, the servants, who generally lived with their employers, were encouraged to return home and honor their mothers. It was traditional for them to bring a special cake along to celebrate the occasion.

In the U.S., in 1907, Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national mothers day. Jarvis persuaded her mothers church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate mothers day on the second anniversary of her mothers death, which was the second sunday in May. The next year mothers day was again celebrated in Philadelphia. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians in their quest to establish a national mothers day. They were successful. Its history, and the history of the nations capital, began when President George Washington signed an Act of Congress in December of 1790 declaring that the federal government would reside in a district "not exceeding ten miles square...on the river Potomac." President Washington, together with city planner Pierre LEnfant, chose the site for the new residence, which is now 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. As preparations began for the new federal city, a competition was held to find a builder of the "Presidents House." Nine proposals were submitted, and Irish-born architect James Hoban won a gold medal for his practical and handsome design.

Construction began when the first cornerstone was laid in October of 1792. Although President Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it. It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in. However, not until Grover Clevelands first presidency did this unsafe practice change. He held a presidential review of the troops from a flag-draped grandstand built in front of the White House. This procession evolved into the official Inaugural parade we know today. Receptions on New Years Day and the Fourth of July continued to be held until the early 1930s.

President Clintons open house on January 21, 1993 renewed a venerable White House Inaugural tradition. Two thousand citizens, selected by lottery, were greeted in the Diplomatic Reception Room by President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore.

我有一个大家庭，总共有五口人，奶奶，爸爸妈妈，哥哥和我。我的奶奶很随和，邻里有很多朋友。每天早晚她都和她的朋友去散步。我的父母在同一家医院当医生，他们总是忙于工作。我的哥哥比我大三岁，是个初中生。我的家庭很幸福。尽管我的父母很忙，但是他们很关心我。我们的生活很美好。

My is a Chinese girl,I very like my home ,because its nice. have six peple.My mother is a English teacher .she teachs 7 clss.she is a good teacher. My father is a math teacher.he teacher 7 clss too. My sister is a student . she is seven years old.she and I are firend. her favorite subject is art,my favorite subject is English and math,And you?On wekeed we go to park.we are very happy. Then I and my family go to a movie I like thrill but my sister likes Beijing oper,I think its boring .My parents like comdey. oh! Its funny. we like it.I love my family!

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. Now ,Its my turn. My name is Edgar, a high school student. I am very honored to be here to give you a speech. Also its a good chance for me to improve my English. I hope I can make a good performance today. The topic of my speech is "After studying here".

Before I came here,I can never imagine that I can learn so much knowledge about other countries, which cant be got from my books in school. Three months ago, I took my first class. Unfortunately, I felt so embarrassed, because I even cant speak any words, though I know I really love English .

After that, I took some of my tutors advice and previewed the lesson that I’ll learn. What’s more, In every class, I JUST try my best to say as much as possible. Now,I can only remember Its a really hard time. What’s worse, I had to go to my high school and went there at the same time.

After several weeks, I began to get used to the atmosphere in web .At least Im not afraid to speak in front of my tutor and foreign teachers.

During web’s period,I found I had improved a lot, both physically and mentally. For example, how to be a confident person, how to plan for my future. And the most important is that I have learnt how to communicate with others, which is a necessary skill. Nowadays studying is not the only thing that we high school students should do, there are some more important things we have ignored.

First, I am grateful for my parents. They have spent so much money for me, but never ask for anything in return. I really know how hard it is to work on such living conditions.

Now Its time to introduce my tutor sally. It was she that led me to the right studying here. It was she that helped me deal with all kinds of annoying things. Also there are some other teachers that I appreciate, especially Laura and Anita. Of course, I like to take foreign teachers classes. Anyway, thanks all of you!

I know I am young; there is a long way in my life. I have to face the difficulties and solve them by myself. But i know i must keep on my dream, I agree that If you put your mind to, you can accomplish anything.
