首日，大儿子早早起身，肩担两桶，直奔山下，不辞辛苦，往返四次，总算在日落西山时注满了家中大缸。

第二天，二儿子携四只空桶下山，先到朋友家借马一匹，以马载桶，往返两次，日方过午，已将大缸注满。

第三天，轮到三儿子取水，他想起日前在山顶砍柴时所见清泉，于是上山循流观察地势，深思熟虑后召来村民，移石挖沟，山泉遂改道流经村中，村民再无缺水之苦。

这个故事至少给了我们这样一些启示：做事要不辞辛劳，埋头苦干;为了更好地完成任务，要想方设法提高工作效率;要致力于从根本上解决问题。
