这部电影以“父亲”为主题，讲述了小托杨对于父亲的梦想由产生到破灭的过程。托杨的梦想同时也隐喻着俄罗斯人民的梦想——对于斯大林的梦想。电影中不止一次出现斯大林的图像，间接代表了俄罗斯民族对斯大林由盲目崇敬到最后抛弃斯大林崇拜的过程，反思了俄罗斯人民过去对于斯大林的幻想，令人深思。

斯大林就好像俄罗斯人民的“父亲”，这部电影也在鼓励俄罗斯人民放弃过去的失败与伤痛，重新来过。像桑亚一样亲手结束了自己父亲的生命，放弃过去，重拾希望。
