I have never been to Troy, but David Maule made me feel as if I were standing on the high wall of Troy, watching the fierce war. 《文化苦旅》一书大体分为四部分，从先生的如梦起点出发，继而透过纸墨缠绕于先生的中国之旅，世界之旅乃至人生之旅中，抒写了一个儒者的家国情怀以及其独特的文化眼光和文化尊严。于：“读万卷书，行万里路，两者关系如何”的提问，先生回答“没有两者，路即是书”。先生辞去一身职务，在山河中找路，用短暂的生命贴着这颗星球的嶙峋一角，给每个人在时空坐标中点出那让人清醒又令人沮丧的一点。

余秋雨先生在书中写道“大地无言，只要有一二个有悟性的文人一站立，它封存久远的文化内涵也就能哗的一声奔泻而出。”沿着先生的行迹，我不断触及着先生那被奔泻的文化内涵所裹卷的吞吐千年。坦然将塔内九千多个经卷，五百多幅绘画作为与殖民者交易的筹码的王圆箓，揣着作为回报的区区三十英镑，沾沾自喜！闻及此事，秋雨先生发出：“我左思右想，最后只能跪倒在沙漠里大哭一场”的儒者一叹。我想抽离这沙漠，却发现双脚囿于这家仇国恨的悲痛中。抬头看着这凄艳的晚霞，这儿，正因为一个缺乏文化眼光的道士，使得一个古老民族的伤口在流血，使得这猛然出现的民族自信的一刻又沉陷下去。
