古人从天地生养万物的过程中，看到了天地真实无妄、自强不息的特征，就把这种特征称作“诚”。并由此推出人的行为准则：“是故诚者，天之道也;思诚者，人之道也”，指出了人应思诚而与天道相通。“信”从造字结构看，“人言为信”，关于信的论述有“一诺千金”、“言必信，行必果”、“一言既出，驷马难追”等。古人为人诚实、恪守诺言的例子比比皆是。

奴讹以为大雪种世衡必不来，没想到他顶风冒雪而至，感服，急聚族人听命。此后，当地羌族相继来归。种世衡的军队秋毫无犯，深得人心，与羌民和睦相处，人称“种家军”。后来每当西夏军犯宋，羌民即先通报，并倾力相助，因此宋军每战必胜，使边境得安。

诚信是为人、处世之本，是对人的本性、人的价值、人的使命提出的基本要求，是一种美德，更是一种责任。古人常用“至诚”的标准来规范自己，协调人与人的关系，提高社会道德水准。
