American culture is unique because it is nurtured， formed and developed under certain conditions， which are characteristically（特性）American. The major factors contributing to the making of this new nation and the forming of a new culture are the hard environment， ethnic diversity（多民族） and plural religion， which is quite different from other nations in the world. What is more， these elements are still influencing the American culture.

1. Rough Environment

The early immigrants who were English Puritans settled down in northeast part of American. The environment there was very rough but they believed the poor land could purify their mind so they chose the place along the coast. From 1607 to 1892， frontiers were pushed further west. The American frontier consisted of the relatively unsettled regions of the United States， usually found in the western part of the country. The frontiersmen looked for a land of rich resources and a land of promise， opportunity and freedom. Actually they looked for a better life. So individualism， self-reliance， and equality of opportunity have perhaps been the values most closely associated with the frontier heritage（遗产） of American.

2. Ethnic Diversity

The population of the United States includes a large variety of ethnic groups coming from many races， nationalities， and religions. People refer to the United States as "melting pot "and the dominant people are British. American is made up of WASP MM， that is， White， Anglo Saxon， Protestants plus Middle Class and Male. In history， people from different countries in the world rushed to American three times. They brought their own culture to American and later on different cultures were mixed together. Thus the unique American culture is formed， a common cultural life with commonly shared values.

3. Plural religion

The fundamental American belief in individual freedom and the right of individuals to practice their own religion is at the center of religious experience in the United States. The great diversity of ethnic backgrounds has produced religious pluralism； almost all of the religions of the world are now practiced in the United States. Christianity（基督教） is the dominant religion in American and Protestant （新教）is predominate（主导）。 Any individuals are equal before God and they believe they can communicate directly to God so they can share the same idea. Under the protestant， many new ones are formed and different explanations produce different sect of religion. Churches are independent and American religion is no longer religion seculars. The institution permits the practice of religion and the political power is separate form religion. So there are more religions in American than in other countries.

4. Current influence：

Nowadays， we can see the continual influence of the three elements in the current American society. American family is typically parents and their unmarried children. Middle-aged and elderly people generally do not live with their married children. Many Americans live in mobile homes whose homes are built with wheels. They can be moved. The people in American have a very strong desire to start a new life in a new place. Quite a number of people change residences（住所） every year. The average American moves fourteen times in his lifetime. The courage to try something new has been an American characteristic. American democracy means majority rule， but it also means protection of minority rights. There are certain freedom which the United States promises to all its citizens and members of minority group cannot be denied these rights by a vote of the majority. Americans also like to be involved in many challenge activities and sports to show their adventurous spirits. All of these are affected by the heritage of the American history.

Going abroad for Studies

The other day I announced that I would go abroad for further studies right after my college education. My decision evoked the immediate objection of my family： Why? Why should I borrow a huge sum of money for overseas studies while I might receive the same education at home at relatively low cost? My answer is： in addition to knowledge， I can gain experience that those who stay at home will never have.

First， experience is the opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. While a person can study a foreign language at home， the effect can never be compared with constant use of the language in academic and everyday life. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken. Living in English-speaking countries such as America and Australia for several years， for example， my English will be as perfect as native speakers.

Second， living and studying abroad offers me a different perspective of the world. On a university campus， foreign students are likely to encounter their counterparts from different countries and areas and are exposed to different ideas and values. This helps me to have a meaningful understanding of different societies and inevitably sees my own country in a new light.

Third， overseas experience， frustrating and painful as it may be， is helpful. A person going abroad for study often experiences much more difficulty——difficulty in adapting to a new culture and in dealing with all problems alone. Yet， the difficulty， coupled with the frustration brought on by culture shock， is a rewarding experience for ones future life and development of personality.

Although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful， the payoff is worthwhile. For the benefit is not merely knowledge gained， but the experience desirable in ones personal life.

Having spent a good deal of time by myself in my room as a child, I am used to those moments when there’s no one around and there’s no cell-phone service, because…are we ever really alone anymore? I always found ways to entertain myself from reading to playing my Gameboy to thinking about how I would booby trap my apartment if it ever got burgled, Home Alone 2 style. I spent hours writing, drawing, day-dreaming about Robert Pattinson*—I generated hours of wholesome* entertainment, all inside my head. As a Grown, I’m not afraid to go to the bathroom without my girlfriends (I never understood the need for a chaperone) or even go out for lunch by myself, and I think I’m better for it.

美国海军7月30日公布的“华盛顿”号核动力航母火灾原因让美国媒体一片哗然。尽管美国军方已经下令将航母指挥官撤职查办，但仍然暴露出美国海军存在着严重的管理问题。

据美国*海军时报*网站报道，今年5月22日，“华盛顿”号航母从智利驶往圣迭戈途中发生火灾。水兵奋力搏斗12个小时才把大火扑灭。船上的核反应堆没有被波及，可谓不幸中的万幸。这次火灾波及80个舱室，大量电缆与数据线被烧毁，造成至少7000万美元的损失。这次公布的调查结果显示，火灾的原因是船员擅自在禁烟区吸烟，点燃了附近储存不当的易燃物。而没有按照规定存放、随意放置在周围的90加仑制冷缩机油更是“火上浇油”。

这已不是美国海军战舰管理第一次出现类似问题。

*分析*：一个不起眼的烟头，却导致一场严重的灾情。这告诉我们：严格地管理，认真地执行，注重细节，对个人对集体，都显得相当重要。

科幻故事从what if开始，也就是从反事实的科幻假设开始。对科幻电影的最根本剧透，就是揭露它的原初假设〈但不必然泄漏剧情〉。本片的原初假设似乎是以下六条。

一、寿命转移。寿命可以从一个人身上转移到另一个人身上。在人际转移中，必须至少一方存在转移或接受转移的意愿，寿命才能转移。

因此，产生了寿命交易，寿命馈赠。偷窃或抢夺寿命也产生了。但寿命不能从人身往动物身上转移，反之亦然。应该附带解释一下：电影不太说寿命，而说「时间」，但事实上它谈的是寿命。

二、寿命储存。寿命可以从人身中转移出来，保存在某种容器里;也可以从容器中转移出来，进入人身;寿命也可以从一个容器转移到另一个容器。

本片对寿命的超人际转移着墨较少，这有点可惜。

三、寿命定值。至少在地球上，至少对人际转移来说，寿命值不因寿命转移而变化，也不存在转移耗损。

因此，爱因斯坦的一秒钟，转到我身上来也是我的一秒钟，不会变成我的一刻钟。当然，寿命如何定价是另一回事，这属于比较低阶的故事设定，取决于具体的经济制度。

四、可转移寿命。只有一个人25足岁之后的寿命，才是可转移寿命(似乎也只有在25足岁之后，才能接受他人的寿命转移)。

也就是说，假设今天有100个婴儿出生，又假设25年后它们都顺利长大，那么结果就是25年后的今天地球上将产生(甚至增加)100年可转移寿命 (为什么是100年而不是200年或500年，要看下一条)。

五、天然寿限与老化停止。每个人的天然寿命上限都是26年，但可以因为接受转移而无限制延寿。25足岁之后，老化停止。

也就是说：如果不考虑寿命转移，那么一个人的生物时钟在26足岁时会自动停止，导致立即死亡。如果考虑寿命转移，也就是结合上一条设定来看的话，那么一个人25足岁之後，一旦寿命收支不能平衡，就会立即死亡，甚至活不满26岁。

六、其它条件，都和目前已知人性和社会属性基本一致。例如性成熟年龄与婚姻制度 (我必须说还保留婚姻制度这点不合人性) 。

为什么设定成这样?----对科幻作者而言，这问题没有意义。但对观众而言，这问题大有意义。如果科幻故事的设定不恰当，观众将难以产生共鸣甚至难以理解，科幻电影将丧失它的预言性或寓言性。

我觉得本片关于「天然寿限」与「可转移寿命」这两项设定(也是本片最重要的设定)的数字不太理想，减损了它的寓言价值。

依照本片的条件设定，残酷的竞争与剥削根本就是必然。如果大家都是自食其力渔猎采集完全不存在竞争与剥削，那么每个人都将在26岁死亡。但人类的性成熟年龄设定并未改变，26岁的男女可能连孩子都还没生出来，就算有孩子又能多大。我实在难以想象，在电影设定的世界里，如果不存在残酷的竞争与剥削，人类社会将如何延续，文化将如何传承。在电影设定的世界里，任何活过26岁的人都必然是剥削者。

更糟的是：时间压力如此紧迫，生育率必然下降。25岁的父母要养小孩，还要从事寿命竞争，这么辛苦谁还愿意生孩子。生育率低，社会上的可转移寿命总量就更少了(本片设定的长生不老必然来自年轻人的牺牲)，这岂不教寿命资源竞争更加惨烈?

总之，本片的基本设定数值和现实人类世界差距过大。我们就像站在三维世界去看平面世界的小打小闹，觉得剧中人可怜又可悲。男女主角真正该去争取的改变，不是银行和资本家的破产，而是Andrew Niccol修改剧本，至少也该重启基因工程把25和1这两个数字改一改。

当然，如果有人从高维世界观察我们这个世界，也一定会觉得我们总是小打小闹，既可怜又可悲。在这点上，本片还是具有极强的寓言警世作用。当我听到女主角爸爸那银行家说「你们只能造成一时的混乱，但别想这样就改变了体制」的时候，还是悚然一惊。

新年是全美各州一致庆祝的主要节日，美国人过新年，最热闹的是除夕晚上。是夜，人们聚集在教堂、街头或广场，唱诗、祈祷、祝福、忏悔，并一同迎候那除旧更新的一瞬，午夜12点，全国教堂钟声齐鸣，乐队高奏著名的怀旧歌曲《一路平安》。在音乐声中，激动的人们拥抱在一起，怀着惜别的感伤和对新生活的向往共同迎来新的一年。

新年在美国并不是最热闹的节日，但仍有不少盛大的庆祝活动，加利福尼亚州的玫瑰花会是美国规模最大的新年盛典，届时用鲜花特别是玫瑰花扎成的彩车绵延数英里，车上摆满鲜花做的各种模型，不仅吸引加州的男女老少簇拥街头，而且还吸引着上百万电视观众。在费城，有举行化装游行的传统，参加游行的人们，有的装扮成小丑，有的装扮成妇女（按照古老的习俗，这个游行不允许女人参加），随着彩车载歌载舞，热闹非凡。

美国人还有一个有意思的习惯，就是在新年许愿立志，他们称之为“新年决心”。这决心通常不是什么宏图大志，而是一些朴实而实际的打算，例如“我一定戒烟”、“我要好好对待邻居”等等，他们总是坦率地讲给大家听，以期得到监督和鼓励。

据说美国的印第安人也有独特的新年习俗，每到除夕之夜，他们就举行富有特色的篝火晚会，一家人围在篝 火旁边，载歌载舞。待至晨曦微露，他们就把破旧衣物付之一炬，作为除旧迎新的象征。

这是一个华丽，庄严的地方，舞台灯光缭绕。刹那间“舞王”闪上了舞台，他那酷炫的舞蹈迷住了所有观众，这时舞伴出现，虽然只有七个人，但他们那俊雅的舞姿，飞腾的脚步，就像有魔力般。摇滚乐刹然而止，“舞王”停住了，舞伴也停住了，台下鸦雀无声，突然间雷鸣般的掌声响彻云霄，像一条赋满激情的巨龙在音乐缭绕的剧院上空盘旋。

这就是美国瑰宝舞蹈团《美国舞蹈巡礼》中的一幕。在这次演出中，有美国爵士舞、百老汇歌舞和现代舞。爵士舞是一种有动感的舞蹈，它是由黑人带到美国，然后成为美国大众舞蹈之一。我最喜欢爵士舞。因为它的舞步活泼欢畅，富有青春的激情，在绚丽的灯光下，自由放飞舞蹈的梦想......

这真是一场视觉的盛宴！
