张衡(78-139)，字平子，南阳西鄂(今河南南阳县石桥镇)人。他是我国东汉时期伟大的天文学家，为我国天文学的发展作出了不可磨灭的贡献;在数学、地理、绘画和文学等方面，张衡也表现出了非凡的才能和广博的学识。

儿时的张衡天资聪明，态度谦虚，特别喜欢思考问题。他对自然界中的万事万物都充满了兴趣。早上带着露珠的花朵，中午高悬天空的太阳，晚上天空中皎洁的月亮、一闪一闪的星星都让他产生了无穷无尽的联想。他总是跟在父母身后问这问那。

有一次，他和母亲一起到田野中挖野菜。出去的时候，太阳刚刚从东方升起，红艳艳的，煞是可爱。他不经意间看见了自己的影子是那么长。他想，我要是长得像影子那样高大多好哇。不知不觉到了中午，母亲挖了满满一篮子野菜。他跟在母亲后面，一蹦一跳地走着。“咦!影子哪里去了呢?”他惊奇地叫道。低头一看，影子缩成了一团，踩在脚底下。张衡赶忙问母亲这是怎么回事，母亲说这是由于中午到了，太阳升得最高，影子就会变短缩成一团，到了傍晚太阳快要落山的时候，影子还会变长的。

回到家里，张衡一直关注着自己的影子的长度。他发现真的像母亲说的那样：傍晚时分，自己的影子又变得像早晨时那样长。他感觉自己又学到了一点新知识，高兴极了。

一个夏天的晚上，父母带着小张衡一起到打谷场上纳凉。这是人们一天当中最快乐的时光。大人们一边摇着扇子，一边海阔天空地聊天;孩子们则叽叽喳喳地玩得不亦乐乎，一会儿捉迷藏，一会儿过家家。只有张衡一个人不声不响地呆在旁边，望着茫茫夜空，嘴里还小声默念着“一个，两个……”母亲以为他白天跟自己出去累着了，就说：“衡儿，你要是累了就自己回屋里歇着吧，不要愣在那里，丢了魂似的。”张衡好像没听见，依然站在那里，目不转睛地望着苍穹。

父母见他没吱声，也就不再管他。又过了好一会儿，大人们都困倦了，接二连三地回家睡觉了，他还在那里望着天空。这时，一个大点儿的孩子过来拍了拍他的肩膀，说：“咳!傻了，老瞅着天上干什么，那上边又不会掉金豆子。”张衡这才回过神来，揉一揉酸痛的脖子说：“谁指望天上掉金豆子了，我在数星星。”此语一出，大家都愣住了。“什么，什么，数星星，真新鲜，还有数星星的傻瓜。那我问你，数清了吗?”那位大哥哥问。“我还没有数完呢，不过现在己经数到一千多颗了。”

旁边的一位老爷爷插话道：“孩子呀，别数了，天上的星星是数不完的。这些星星无穷无尽，飘忽不定……”张衡却打断老爷爷的话：“才不是呢，那一片天空就只有一千多颗，只要我坚持数下去，肯定会数完的。”老爷爷被张衡的执着精神打动了，一下子不知道说什么好。

张衡的父亲赶紧过来打圆场：“不许这样跟老爷爷说话。”张衡意识到自己的不对，连忙向老爷爷道歉。但他回过头来，还是想跟父亲辩解一番。父亲早看出他的心思，就说：“衡儿，我知道你的想法，但你这样挨个数是不行的。天上的星星分布是有规律的，你要按照这些规律，把它们分成一个个星座。这样才会把它们弄清、记牢。”

小张衡点了点头，按照父亲说的去做，果然又认识了许多新的星星。

随着年龄的增长，张衡的求知欲越来越强烈。当时，各种自然灾害频繁地发生，地震带来的灾难尤为严重。它来无影去无踪，一旦发生却极具破坏力。这引起了张衡的思考。他想，能不能制造一种在地震发生后准确测定其方位的仪器，以便及时调拨物资进行救援。定下目标以后，他查阅了大量关于地震的资料，并且多次实地勘测。
