古代中国的大小城池，都建有钟楼和鼓楼。钟楼上挂钟，鼓楼上放置大鼓。每天黎明时分，人们敲响大钟，打开城门;每天日落击鼓，城门关闭。“晨钟暮鼓”是古代百姓起居的重要信号。

西安钟楼坐落在西安市中心，东西南北四条大街的交汇点上。公元1384年，朱元璋称帝时，害怕全国各地出现真龙天子与他争夺王位 ,下令修建钟楼以镇龙气。因楼上有一口5吨多重的大铁钟，每天早晨击钟报时，所以取名“钟楼”。

钟楼初建时，地址并不在现在的位置，而在今西大街的广济街口，与现在的鼓楼遥相对峙。明城墙建成后，由于城市中心东移，公元1582年，又将钟楼整体迁移到现在的位置。现在的钟楼，是中国六大古都现存最大、保存最完好的古代钟楼。从建筑规模、历史价值、艺术价值衡量，西安钟楼，居全国钟楼之冠。

楼体为木质结构，共两层，深绿色琉璃瓦，三重檐，每重四个飞檐翘角。楼的四周有回廊，环绕回廊，凭栏四望，可饱览古城全貌。楼内有木梯可盘旋而上，里面陈列着许多明清瓷器和古代文物。楼里楼外雕梁画栋，贴金彩绘，气势恢宏。门扇窗雕精美细致，突现了明清盛行的装饰艺术。每层的门扇上，都有大量浮雕，上面述说了古代经典的轶闻和典故。
