Social Networking’s Influence on College Students

Social networking has gained huge worldwide popularity in recent years, especially among college students. In China, college student is the main force of social networking, 97.7% of which are fond of instant messaging and 80.7% prefer social networking sites like micro-blog and Q-zone (China Internet Network Information Center, 2013). Moreover, Michigan State University Original Study also finds that compared with Chinese students, American students are more tied to social media (2013). Therefore, nowadays there is a heated debate about advantages and disadvantages about social networking’s influence on college students.

Obviously, there are a number of positive features on social networking. It provides a convenient access to consolidate the relationship with people they know, make friends with strangers without restrictions of space and share happiness and sorrow. What’s more, social networking also has educational functions including reducing college drop-out rates, motivating students to work as a team, sending information about assignments, reminding students about deadline and stimulating students to help each other. However, every coin has two sides. There are also many disadvantages on the influence of social networking, among which, “soft addiction” is the most serious problem, distracting students from study. This kind of “soft addiction” and distraction was also confirmed by Zhang (2011) who conducted a survey by questionare of 500 Chinese college students from different schools and found that 33% students could not bear one-week life without social networking and 77% students could not help themselves accessing social networking site during classes. Furthermore, a social experiment was performed by Harrisburg University (Pilkington, 2010) to figure out the effect after initiating blackout of all social networking sites. 小明原来可不是这样，他原来是一个很听话的小孩，考试次次得100分，动不动就获奖。但由于一个坏同学的诱惑，才渐渐走上网络游戏的道路，成绩渐渐下滑，从名列前茅到了中偏下的成绩，然后又渐渐成了班里学习最差的同学，而在远处工作的妈妈却毫不知情。而且，他在学校动不动就跟同学们讨论关于游戏的事情。 放暑假了。这可是小明盼望以久的事情，因为在暑假里，自己可以无忧无虑的玩，玩多久都可以，而他的母亲对他特别放心，很少会回来一趟，只是电话打得比较多，而每次小明都是接电话，欺骗妈妈自己正在做作业。在暑假快要结束的前十天，小明连续打了五天，饿了就吃点剩饭，渴了就喝点白开水，不睡觉，彻夜在网络世界中玩。终于，有一天，小明在玩游戏中不知不觉昏倒了，他的母亲正巧在这个时候给他打了一个电话，可是以往小明都会来接电话，可这一次却没有来接电话，小明的母亲觉得家里发生了一些事儿，于是便立刻回到家，发现小明昏倒在电脑前，而电脑里显示出的是游戏，小明的妈妈立刻抱起儿子上医院。

事后，小明向母亲坦白了事情的一切经过，并决定以后再也不玩游戏了，一定要痛改前非。终于，小明又成了班里名列前茅的同学了。我要向全国还沉迷在网络游戏中的青少年说：“你们快点从网络游戏的虚幻场景中醒来吧，不要沉迷在网络中，不然，你们的良好前途将会被毁掉的!”

More and more people, especially students, like to go to net bars.They are absorbed in playing video games, making bad friends and having a chat with Meimei on the net in the bar. Some students often go on playing late into the night in the net bar. As a result, not only does it do harm to their health but also produces a bad effect on their studies.

Now a lot of net bars have been shut down in Beijing. But some students go by bus to the net bars at suburbs to play. Fortunately, more and more parents and schools have realized it. Recently, more than six thousand students guaranteed that they would be far away from net bars in Jinzhou city, Liaoning Province. It is quite necessary for the students to get rid of the bad habit. ​

在网上，我明白了卫星如何上天，什么是所谓的UFO之谜。百慕大三角之谜，埃及的金字塔之谜等一切系列世界上奇妙的事情。我增长了知识，扩大了知识面，我认识了许许多多的朋友。有学生，也有工人，教师各式各样的人物。他们当中有的年过半百，有的还上小学。他们有的学识渊博，有的不知鲁迅是何人物。

在网上，如果遇到麻烦，大家会帮助你，遇到困难，伙伴们会站在一条战线上。他们会在精神上、物质上、实际行动上给你无限的关心。在那里，大家都是一个集体，是一个大家庭。

网络，对任何人都充满了吸引力。它是一个游戏世界。但它的游戏不是儿时所玩的“过家家”之类的游戏。它是特殊的游戏，是充满欢乐与激情的游戏世界。
