——On Sister Carrie

Carrie was such an ordinary rural girl at the beginning of the story. Sitting on the seat of a bus, she couldn’t help feeling exciting at the sight of the metropolis’ spectacle. She was impressed deeply by large crowd on the avenue, the spacious square or tall buildings.

Far more different from other heroines, Carrie was not a plain pure angel like Snow-white, nor was she brave enough to be a heroine of revolutionist or even a reformer, nor was she so clever as to be a successful career woman who start from scratch.

What attracted her most, after her entering this huge metropolis was the incredible fineries, fashion shoes, smart handbags displaying in the shop windows, the jewellerys shining brightly behind the glass. She dreamed that one day, she could wear all of these, jogging gracefully into the most luxurious hotel with focused sights of admiration.

And this was not merely a dream. Because she had large eyes which can earn others’ sympathy, even love. She had wonderful figure which can win others’ hearts. However, anything she got, anywhere she reached, had not come from her ambition. Things happened, and then she accepted. That’s what she had just done — just to accept willingly from the bottom of her heart. She was not at all an evil woman who would give anything for the fortune or fame. However, she would give uo something for a better life when her instinct defeated her intellect.

That was Carrie, a girl had her own desire, a human being just like many others in the realistic world.

There’s one sentence written in chapter VIII:” When this jangle of free-will instinct shall have been adjusted, when perfect understanding has given the former the power to replace the latter entirely, man will no longer vary.” However, how many people can go that further.

And I want to quote another sentence to wind up my essay:

Several years ago,from joyo,I bought the book "the kite runner" which ranked first on best sellers volume.First reading the book,I was totally moved and even cried for the sad story.This year,I knew it has been adapted into a movie.After seeing the movie,I read again this book and gained some new views.

The novel begins a story about two boys.Amir is born in a rich family.Hassan is his servant as well as close friend.They both lose mother from birth and grow up like brothers.Hassan is very loyal to Amiar,but Amiar sells him.Many years later,Amir has settled down in America for years and established a family,but Hassan died for protecting Amirs luxury house in Afghanistan and leave an orphan.Accidentally,Amir gets to know a big secret and decides to atone for his crime that hound around him from childhood.

Reading it again,most of my original views has changed.

At the first place,I have a feeling of being cheated by the writer.The novel first attracted me before because it set its plot in a special environment---Afghanistan which even I often got news about from TV and newspaper,I knew the country utterly ignorant except wars and terrorism.So I wanted to understand more about the calamitous country.However,I am disappointed by the novel which just use a special background environment to tell a so-called travel of human nature .The theme of the novel should be atonement if it was taken off flowery coat.Bad gay like Amir and and good gay like Hassan,adding some the present best sellers polular elements like bastard,forming the main contents. In fact,the kite runner impressed me deeply and it just depends on sensational words.Besides,what makes me most dislike is that the writer,an Afghan-American,contorted some political elements for American advantages.The history background only make the affair of Russia invading and Taliban dictators go into particulars,but not mention Americas ignominious role in this politics.Why Taliban dictators are so unruly?Why Russia invaded Afghanistan in 1979?Why Afghan people still live in poor condition nowadays?America,a main actor is disposed of in this novel.

At the second place,the characters all serve to a tacky theme-atonement and birth secrects.When the birth secrects are exposed,the atonement travel begins.When the atonement finishes,the story finishes.

I even feel I am wrapped around the American medias little finger.Many celebrities and book concerns writed good comments,which helped it ranke first on sales volume for several times and made readers think it must get widely praised and then bought it without doubt finally.

Though I think the disadvantages are more than advatages,compared with the back atonement part,I like the front part that describes the pure friendship and innocent childhood between two boys.The description about the culture of kite in Afghanistan is excellent.

As a first book of the writer,it is resonable that the novel has some deficiencies.I hope his next and next works can more and more perfect.

Little Women

Before I read this book, I had watched a cartoon movie made by Japan. So I have a strong interest on it.

It all begins in the dead of winter; The Christmas Season. The coldest one of all, were the war has made fuel for heating very scarce. While her husband is off at war, Marmee is left alone to raise their four daughters: Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy.

On Christmas Eve, Marmee has just arrived home from passing out food to the less fortunate with a letter from her husband, the girls father. The all gather together around the fire to read the letter. Afterwards, the girls are teary eyed. Marmee kisses them and they are off to bed.

Jo is longing to become a writer. So, every night she stays up late writing the script for soap operas. As morning comes she is the last one awake. The table is set, and food prepared for their Christmas feast.

As dusk falls, the girls are all up in the attic acting out Jos play, which she reads from the local (fake) newspaper. As they are performing, their rich, next-door neighbors grandson watches from the window.

The 2 oldest girls: Jo and Meg, get ready to attend the Christmas Ball. While Jo is curling Megs hair, there is a strange smell to the air. Amy screams, Megs hair is being singed. They continue digging through the old clothes bin for a pair of white gloves.

One of the prominent themes in Little Women is the coming of age or maturation of the girls. During the course of the novel we see them grow in many ways -- physically, intellectually, and especially emotionally. One question which readers must ask themselves is whether the views the characters have on the coming of age process are shared by Alcott. If they arent, what are Alcotts views and how do they differ from those of the women in her story?

It is interesting to examine the last half of Chapter 20, "Confidential." Jo addresses the maturation issue as she speaks with Marmee of the situation between Meg and Mr. Brooke. The possible love between these two represents one of the very important aspects in coming of age for a teenage girl. Jo treats this natural process as if it were some sort of disease, however. Jo cannot understand why Meg would want to stop behaving "like a sensible creature" (p.202)， and refers to love as "such nonsense."

我在心里为美人鱼打抱不平，为什么她对王子这么好，王子却不回报她，而她却能为了王子的幸福，义无反顾地投入海中，化为泡沫。姐姐说，虽然结局王子没有和美人鱼在一起，但因为美人鱼有一颗美好善良的心灵，她为爱不惜牺牲自己生命，所以她并没有化作泡沫，而是去了天堂，得到了永生。这种遗憾美，更能牵动读者的心，我也更加喜欢小美人鱼了。

"一点也不错!"兵士说。"我把它忘记得一干二净。"于是他又走下去，把打火匣取来。巫婆把他拉了出来。所以他现在又站在大路上了。他的衣袋、皮靴、行军袋、帽子，全都盛满了钱。

"你这打火匣有什么用呢?"兵士问。"这与你没有什么相干，"巫婆反驳他说，"你已经得到钱――你只消把打火匣交给我好了。"

"废话!"兵士说。"你要它有什么用，请你马上告诉我。不然我就抽出剑来，把你的头砍掉。"

"我可不能告诉你!"巫婆说。

兵士把剑挥了起来朝巫婆砍去。吓得巫婆赶忙跑了。兵士把他所有的钱都包在围裙里，象一捆东西似的背在背上;然后把那个打火匣放在衣袋里，一直向城里走去。

他现在生活得很愉快，常常到戏院去看戏，到国王的花园里去逛逛，送许多钱给穷苦的人们。这是一种良好的行为，因为他自己早已体会到，没有钱是多么可怕的事!现在他有钱了，有华美的衣服穿，交了很多朋友。这些朋友都说他是一个稀有的人物，一位豪侠之士。这类话使这个兵士听起来非常舒服。不过他每天只是把钱花出去，却赚不进一个来。所以最后他只剩下两个铜板了。因此他就不得不从那些漂亮房间里搬出来，住到顶层的一间阁楼里去。他也只好自己擦自己的皮鞋，自己用缝针补自己的皮鞋了。他的朋友谁也不来看他了，因为走上去要爬很高的梯子。

有一天晚上天很黑。他连一根蜡烛也买不起。这时他忽然记起，自己还有一根蜡烛头装在那个打火匣里――巫婆帮助他到那空树底下取出来的那个打火匣。他把那个打火匣和蜡烛头取出来。当他在火石上擦了一下，火星一冒出来的时候，房门忽然自动地开了，他在树底下所看到的那条眼睛有茶杯大的狗儿就在他面前出现了。它说："我的主人，有什么吩咐?"

"这是怎么一回事儿?"兵士说。"这真是一个滑稽的打火匣。如果我能这样得到我想要的东西才好呢!替我弄几个钱来吧!"他对狗儿说。于是"嘘"的一声，狗儿就不见了。一会儿，又是"嘘"的一声，狗儿嘴里衔着一大口袋的钱回来了。

现在士兵才知道这是一个多么美妙的打火匣。只要他把它擦一下，那狗儿就来了，坐在盛有铜钱的箱子上。要是他擦它两下，那只有银子的狗儿就来了。要是他擦三下，那只有金子的狗儿就出现了。现在这个兵士又搬到那几间华美的房间里去住，又穿起漂亮的衣服来了。他所有的朋友马上又认得他了，并且还非常关心他来。

有一次他心中想："人们不能去看那位公主，也可算是一桩怪事。大家都说她很美。不过，假如她老是独住在那有许多塔楼的铜宫里，那有什么意思呢?难道我就看不到她一眼吗?我的打火匣在什么地方?"他擦出火星，马上"嘘"的一声，那只眼睛象茶杯一样的狗儿就跳出来了。

"现在是半夜了，一点也不错，"兵士说。"不过我倒很想看一下那位公主哩，哪怕一会儿也好。"

狗儿立刻就跑到门外去了。出乎这士兵的意料之外，它一会儿就领着公主回来了。她躺在狗的背上，已经睡着了。谁都可以看出她是一个真正的公主，因为她非常好看。这个兵士忍不住要吻她一下，因为他是一个不折不扣的丘八呀。

狗儿又带着公主回去了。但是天亮以后，当国王和王后正在饮茶的时候，公主说她在晚上做了一个很奇怪的梦，梦见一只狗和一个兵，她自己骑在狗身上，那个兵吻了她一下。"这倒是一个很好玩的故事呢!"王后说。

因此第二天夜里有一个老宫女就得守在公主的床边，来看看这究竟是梦呢，还是什么别的东西。

那个兵士非常想再一次看到这位可爱的公主。因此狗儿晚上又来了，背起她，尽快地跑走了。那个老宫女立刻穿上套鞋，以同样的速度在后面追赶。当她看到他们跑进一幢大房子里去的时候，她想："我现在可知道这块地方了。"她就在这门上用白粉笔画了一个大十字。随后她就回去睡觉了，不久狗儿把公主送回来了。不过当它看见兵士住的那幢房子的门上画着一个十字的时候，它也取一支粉笔来，在城里所有的门上都画了一个十字。这件事做得很聪明，因为所有的门上都有了十字，那个老宫女就找不到正确的地方了。

早晨，国王、王后、那个老宫女以及所有的官员很早就来了，要去看看公主所到过的地方。

当国王看到第一个画有十字的门的时候，他就说："就在这儿!"

但是王后发现另一个门上也有个十字，所以她说："亲爱的丈夫，不是在这儿呀?"

这时大家都齐声说："那儿有一个!那儿有一个!"因为他们无论朝什么地方看，都发现门上画有十字。所以他们觉得，如果再找下去，也不会得到什么结果。

不过王后是一个非常聪明的女人。她不仅只会坐四轮马车，而且还能做一些别的事情。她取出一把金剪刀，把一块绸子剪成几片，缝了一个很精致的小袋，在袋里装满了很细的荞麦粉。她把这小袋系在公主的背上。这样布置好了以后，她就在袋子上剪了一个小口，好叫公主走过的路上，都撒上细粉。

晚间狗儿又来了。它把公主背到背上，带着她跑到兵士那儿去。这个兵士现在非常爱她;他倒很想成为一位王子，和她结婚呢。

狗儿完全没有注意到，面粉已经从王宫那儿一直撒到兵士那间屋子的窗上――它就是在这儿背着公主沿着墙爬进去的。早晨，国王和王后已经看得很清楚，知道他们的女儿曾经到什么地方去过。他们把那个兵士抓来，关进牢里去。

他现在坐在牢里了。嗨，那里面可够黑暗和闷人啦!人们对他说："明天你就要上绞架了。"这句话听起来可真不是好玩的，而且他把打火匣也忘掉在旅馆里。第二天早晨，他从小窗的铁栏杆里望见许多人涌出城来看他上绞架。他听到鼓声，看到兵士们开步走。所有的人都在向外面跑。在这些人中间有一个鞋匠的学徒。他还穿着破围裙和一双拖鞋。他跑得那么快，连他的一双拖鞋也飞走了，撞到一堵墙上。那个兵士就坐在那儿，在铁栏杆后面朝外望。

对于这要求，国王不愿意说一个"不"字。所以兵士就取出了他的打火匣，擦了几下火。一――二――!忽然三只狗儿都跳出来了――一只有茶杯那么大的眼睛;一只有水车轮那么大眼睛;还有一只的眼睛简直有圆塔那么大。

"请帮助我，不要叫我被绞死吧!"兵士说。

这时这几只狗儿就向法官和全体审判人员扑来，拖着这个人的腿，咬着那个人的鼻子，把他们扔向空中有好几丈高，他们落下来时都跌成了肉酱。

"不准这样对付我!"国王说。不过最大的那只狗儿还是拖住他和他的王后，把他们跟其余的人一起乱扔，所有的士兵都害怕起来，老百姓也都叫起来："小兵，你做咱们的国王吧!你跟那位美丽的公主结婚吧!"

这么着，大家就把这个兵士拥进国王的四轮马车里去。那三只狗儿就在他面前跳来跳去，同时高呼："万岁!"小孩子用手指吹起口哨来，士兵们敬起礼来。那位公主走出她的铜宫，做了王后，感到非常满意。

结婚典礼举行了足足八天。那三只狗儿也上桌子坐了，把眼睛睁得比什么时候都大。

这几天我在阅读《小巴掌童话》这本书，其中《扛拖把的小刺猬》这个故事我觉得特别有趣，很有深意。

故事中小熊和小刺猬是好朋友，小熊有个坏习惯，喜欢随地吐痰、吐唾沫，小刺猬多次劝小熊，他都不听。机灵的小刺猬想出了一个主意，有一天和小熊去公园玩的时候，扛着一把拖把，小熊随地吐一口痰，小刺猬就赶紧用拖把把痰拖干净。小熊看到小刺猬的举动后，难为情地承认了错误，让小刺猬的拖把给他扛，他扛着拖把就能随时提醒自己要注意环境卫生。最后小熊彻底改掉了随地吐痰的坏习惯。

I think it is the most important information implied in the novel by Dickens-he believed that goodness could conquer every difficulty. Although I don’t think goodness is omnipotent yet I do believe that those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. 《白雪公主》这个故事大家应该都知道吧！就是在很久以前有一个国家，这个国家的王后生了一位漂亮的公主，她的皮肤像雪一样的白，乌黑的头发下面长着一双水灵灵的大眼睛，她就是“白雪公主”。过了不久，王后就去世了，国王又取了一个王后，这个王后非常狠毒。她有一面镜子，她天天问镜子世界上谁最美丽，镜子每次都说她最美丽，直到有一天，镜子回答说是白雪公主最美丽的时候，王后差点气死。于是她千方百计要害死白雪公主……最后，这个王后也没能如愿，因为白雪公主又活过来了。

这次的阅读让我真正的懂得了一个道理：善有善报，恶有恶报。故事中的白雪公主就是一个善良的人，最后她终于和王子过上了美好而又幸福的生活，而狠毒的王后却被活活的饿死了。同时这个故事也提醒我们不要轻易相信别人的话，以免给我们带来意想不到的危险。

雪人整天站着望着窗子里边。漆黑的夜里屋子更加诱人。火炉里发出的光是如此地柔和，不像月亮也不像太阳那样发光。不，只有火炉里面有点什么东西的时候才能发这样的光。若是炉门打开，火焰便冲了出来，这是它的习惯。火焰明晃晃地照在雪人的白脸庞上，红红的，一直红到他的胸部。“我受不了啦!”他说道，“她把舌头伸出来的那个样子多么好看!”

夜很长，但是对雪人却不如此。他怀着美好的想象站在那里，他的思绪挨冻发冷，冷得轧轧地响。

清晨，地下室的窗子上冻结了冰，现出了任何雪人所能要求的最美丽的冰花，但是冰花挡住了火炉。玻璃上的冰不化开，他不能看到她。他身上嘎嘎轧轧地响，这是最令雪人高兴的一个寒冷天气，可是他却高兴不起来。他本来能够而且也应该感到很幸福，可是他不幸福，他患了对火炉的单相思病。

“这对雪人可是一种很糟糕的病，”看家狗说道，“我曾经患过这种病，但是我已经挺过来了。滚!滚!——现在天气要变化了。”

天气变了，开始解冻了。

From the story, I feel the power of wisdom and value of love. In our actual life, we may meet many kinds of difficulties and lure. We should face them bravely and try our best to overcome them. In my daily life, I often felt panic and cried when I met any difficulties about my study. Sometimes, I ask money from my parents but do meaningless things. I am really ashamed.

In the future , I decide to study hard .I do everything that I can do to reduce the pressure of parents .I will try my best to be brave and intelligent. I believe I can do better.
