i never considered myself unique, but people are constantly telling me, "you are a miracle." to me, i was just an ordinary "guy" with realistic goals and big dreams. i was a 19-year-old student at the university of texas and well on my way toward fulfilling my "big dream" of one day becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

"ill be back in two minutes," i yelled at sharon as i closed the door. but instead, those two minutes changed my life forever.

entering the convenience store was like entering the twilight zone. on the outside i was a healthy, athletic, pre-med student, but on the inside i was just another statistic of a violent crime. i thought i was entering an empty store, but suddenly i realized it was not empty at all. three robbers were in the process of committing a robbery and my entrance into the store caught them by surprise. one of the criminals immediately shoved a .38 caliber handgun to my head, ordered me to the cooler, pushed me down on the floor, and pumped a bullet into the back of my head -- execution style. he obviously thought i was dead because he did not shoot me again. the trio of thieves finished robbing the store and left calmly.

meanwhile, sharon wondered why i had not returned. after seeing the three men leave the store she really began to worry as i was the last person she saw entering the store. she quickly went inside to look for me, but saw no one-only an almost empty cash register containing one check and several pennies. quickly she ran down each aisle shouting, "mike, mike!"

when the police arrived they immediately called the homicide division as they did not think i would survive and the paramedic reported that she had never seen a person so severely wounded survive. at 1:30 a.m. my parents who lived in houston, were awakened by a telephone call from brackenridge hospital advising them to come to austin as soon as possible for they feared i would not make it through the night.

but i did make it through the night and early in the morning the neurosurgeon decided to operate. however, he quickly informed my family and sharon that my chances of surviving the surgery were only 40/60. if this were not bad enough, the neurosurgeon further shocked my family by telling them what life would be like for me if i beat the odds and survived. he said i probably would never walk, talk, or be able to understand even simple commands.

my family was hoping and praying to hear even the slightest bit of encouragement from that doctor. instead, his pessimistic words gave my family no reason to believe that i would ever again be a productive member of society. but once again i beat the odds and survived the three and a half hours of surgery. granted, i still could not talk, my entire right side was paralyzed and many people thought i could not understand, but at least i was stable. after one week in a private room the doctors felt i had improved enough to be transferred by jet ambulance to del oro rehabilitation hospital in houston.

my hallucinations, coupled with my physical problems, made my prognosis still very bleak. however, as time passed my mind began to clear and approximately six weeks later my right leg began to move ever so slightly. within seven weeks my right arm slowly began to move and at eight weeks i uttered my first few words. my speech was extremely difficult and slow in the beginning, but at least it was a beginning. i was starting to look forward to each new day to see how far i would progress. but just as i thought my life was finally looking brighter i was tested by the hospital euro-psychologist. she explained to me that judging from my test results she believed that i should not focus on returning to college but that it would be better to set more "realistic goals."

upon hearing her evaluation i became furious for i thought, "who is she to tell me what i can or cannot do. she does not even know me. i am a very determined and stubborn person!" i believe it was at that very moment that i decided i would somehow, someday return to college.

it took me a long time and a lot of hard work but i finally returned to the university of texas in the fall of 1983 -- a year and a half after almost dying. the next few years in austin were very difficult for me, but i truly believe that in order to see beauty in life you have to experience some unpleasantness. maybe i have experienced too much unpleasantness, but i believe in living each day to the fullest, and doing the very best i can. and each new day was very busy and very full, for besides attending classes at the university i underwent therapy three to five days each week at brackenridge hospital. if this were not enough i flew to houston every other weekend to work with tom williams, a trainer and executive who had worked for many colleges and professional teams and also had helped many injured athletes, such as earl campbell and eric dickerson. through tom i learned: "nothing is impossible and never, never give up or quit."

i thought of those words, and i thought of tom, my family and sharon who believed so strongly in me as i climbed the steps to receive my diploma from the dean of liberal arts at the university of texas on that bright sunny afternoon in june of 1986. excitement and pride filled my heart as i heard the dean announce that i had graduated with "highest honors", been elected to phi beta kappa, and been chosen as one of 12 deans distinguished graduates out of 1600 in the college of liberal arts. the overwhelming emotions and feelings that i experienced at that very moment, when most of the audience gave me a standing ovation, i felt would never again be matched in my life-not even when i graduated with a masters degree in social work and not even when i became employed full time at the texas pain and stress center. but i was wrong!

on may 24, 1987, i realized that nothing could ever match the joy i felt as sharon and i were married. sharon, my high school sweetheart of nine years, had always stood by me, through good and bad times. to me, sharon is my miracle, my diamond in a world filled with problems, hurt, and pain. it was sharon who dropped out of school when i was hurt so that she could constantly be at my side. she never wavered or gave up on me. it was her faith and love that pulled me through so many dark days. while other nineteen year old girls were going to parties and enjoying life, sharon devoted her life to my recovery. that, to me, is the true definition of love. after our beautiful wedding i continued working part time at the pain center and completed my work for a masters degree. we were extremely happy, but even happier when we learned sharon was pregnant.

on july 11, 1990 at 12:15 a.m. sharon woke me with the news: "we need to go to the hospital… my water just broke." i couldnt help but think how ironic it was that my life almost ended in a convenience store and now on the date "7-11" we were about to bring a new life into this world. this time it was my turn to help sharon as she had helped me over those past years. she was in labor for 15 hours. at 3:10 p.m. sharon and i experienced the birth of our beautiful daughter, shawn elyse segal! tears of joy and happiness came to my eyes as our healthy, alert, wonderful daughter entered this world. we anxiously counted her 10 fingers and her 10 toes and watched her wide eyes take in the world about her. it was truly a beautiful picture that was etched in my mind forever as she lie in her mothers waiting arms, just minutes after her birth. at that moment i thanked god for blessing us with the greatest miracle of all-shawn elyse segal.

The ancient said the world is a book and those who do not travel read only

one page. I like travel, because travel not only allows me to enjoy the great

rivers and mountains of the motherland, but also brings me knowledge and

exercise. Beautiful sceneries make me impressed and friendly people make me

life. I like the feeling on the road, which greatly enrich my life and fields of

This sounds so inspiring, the spirit of pursuing the dreams moves so many audiences, but for me, besides moved, I feel more sorry about the protagonists, for their unwise choices. Life is important, only the living person can have the rights to talk about the dreams, if they lose their lives, everything is impossible. So health is more important than dreams, people need to keep themselves healthy first, and then they can better fulfill their dreams. The wise person will choose to get the treatment and give up the dreams for a while, when they recover, they continue their dreams. So health first, then other things rank second.

当我们看电视剧的时候，总可以发现相同的剧情，为了实现理想，主人公放弃了最佳的治疗时间，虽然他们本身已经病得很严重。这听起来很励志，为了追求理想的精神感动了很多观众，但是对于我来说，除了感动，对主人公我感到遗憾，因为他们做了不明智的决定。生命是很重要的，只有活着的人才有权利去谈论理想，如果他们失去了生命，一切就不可能了。因此健康比理想重要，人们需要首先保持他们健康，然后才能更好地实现理想。明智的人会选择治疗，暂时放弃理想，当恢复健康的时候，他们可以继续他们的理想。所以，健康第一，其他的事情第二。

Im back at school now. I wish to express my thanks to you for the

wonderful vacation I spent with you and your family. During the vacation you

taught me how to swim, boat and fish. I really appreciate your taking time off

work to take me around and show me so many places.

Your mother is such a terrific cook! I think I must have gained 10 pounds

just in the week I spent with you. Surely Ive spent a happy vacation, which

Some days ago,it was the Chinese Spring Festival.So I went to shopping with

my parents.the old saying said that to go to outside to have a walk in the new

year,you could get the good luck within this whole year.it always a happy

festival in our country,and the folk in the departments were very happiness. it

was very crowded.we went to the downtown to buy some presents for our

relatives,of course,i got a big present from my parents.it was a thing that i

wanted to get for a long time.you know,it was the festival,so all the

departments were saled their products in a low price. its cheap for us.all the

things you saw were perfect.i was very happy that i could go to shopping with my

parents. because i could get the present,and the most important reason is i

could go with my parents.

Before the summer vocation coming , I expierence so much,Such as being a teacher ,holding ceremony for our graduate ,joinning cet 6,I recon that I am more and more mature and confidence.

The last summer vocation ,I should have been gone to Guangzhou and open my horizon like feel the sense of sitting train ,subway ,seeing sea and soon on,I have ever done so many daydreams in my life,however ,unfortunately,I have to stay changsha ,due to a succession of subjective and obejective reasons.

Never mind ,I don’t care abot where I stay , as long as I happy with my life,I can learn some communications means enough.

The last summer vocation deserve to me treature,I should depict colourful and marverlous frame ,adding kinds of tastes into my daily life ,It lead me optimistic more.

I will graduate next year, now I start to worry about my future, I don’t

know what kind of job I should work on, I see the job hunting information from

the Internet, I don’t know whether I should take the chance. My teacher told me

that I need to take every chance, so that I will find what I want.

Graduate season is a sad and busy season. After four years’ study, it is

time to say goodbye to your classmates, the building of the deep relationship

makes it hard to say goodbye. At the same time, finding a job is the most

important thing for students, because they need to find their places in the

society. As there are many opportunities for graduate students, they always

don’t know how to do.

I have learned that I should take every chance when they job offer comes,

even though I need to go to a far place to get the interview and there will be

some money that I need to spend. But I will learn many things and become more

competitive.

to learn some skills to help them run business. There is no doubt that Chinese

literature has great influence on the world. It is the national treasure, and we

can probe into the history and appreciate the charm.

Mid-autumn festival is one of the most important day for Chinese people.

The families will get together and enjoy the reunion. Mooncake is the typical

food. People will have it while appreciate the full moon. At this time, the old

generation like to tell the story of Hou Yi and his wife, which is the coming of

this festival. Hou Yi is a man with great strength. He shot down nine suns and

left only one. While his wife was so curious to taste the pill which Hou Yi told

her to keep it for him. Then his wife flied to the moon and left Hou Yi forever.

It is said that the wife lives in the moon. So when we look at moon, she is

watching us.

My summer holiday begun on July 7th.I love summer holiday because I dont have to go to school and I can enjoy myself with my friends.I often spend the mornings doing my homework.And I always watch TV in the afternoon at home because its very hot outside.And in the evening,I go swimming with my family and then hang out with my friends.I love swimming very much.

My plan for August is travelling.I travel with my family every summer holiday.I like travelling because I can go to different places and meet different people.Sometimes I make good friends during the journey.And its very sad to say goodbye to them when the journey ends.

我的暑假开始于7月7日。我喜欢暑假,因为我不用去上学,我和我的朋友可以享受自己。我经常在早上做作业。下午,我总是看电视在家里,因为外面太热了。在晚上,我和我的家人一起去游泳,然后和我的朋友出去玩。我非常喜欢游泳。

我计划八月是旅游。我每个暑假旅游与我的家人。我喜欢旅行,因为我可以去不同的地方,遇到不同的人。有时我让好朋友在旅途中。而且很伤心的旅程结束的时候向他们说再见。

During the winter holiday, I was very happy because of the Chinese new year

and other reasons. During the holiday, my parents and I went back to my hometown

in the countryside in Hebei Province. I had not come back for several years, so

that I was so surprised to find that great changes had taken place in this small

village in the past years. Almost every family in the village had color TV set

and some of them had computers. Many families had their houses newly built or

rebuilt. Previously,could be seen everywhere, but now they have taken on an

entirely newlook. Motorcycles or even private cars are not luxuries any

more.

One of the villagers proudly told me that he and some other villagers were

going to join a tour and travel abroad. Previously, the villagers were busy in

their farm work all the year round, but now they have much more time and money

to relax or entertain. Traveling has become a new trend among villagers. Seeing

these amazing changes, my father said that he would go back to my hometown as

soon as he retired. As for me, I strongly supported his idea.

In recent years, thousands and thousands of people leave the comforts of their homes to study in countries such as united states,Canada,England and so on. Whats more, more and more people study abroad become younger. Why do they do it? The problem is worthy of serious consideration.

Everything has tow sides. Not only has the advantages but also has disadvantages, including studying abroad. On the one hand, the developed countries are more advanced in education, philosophy and teaching facilities, students can receive better education. On the other hand , different countries have different cultural .Contacting with with different people on their own is also a kind of exercise. People learn about the culture of other countries , they can improve their connotation of self–cultivation. Its benefical for us to develop in the future. Not only can they make more friends ,but also they can learn more languages.

But living and studying in another countries can also have its problem. On the one hand, if the students age is too small, its difficult for them to solve the problem of life. They bear a great pressure, not just the life pressure,but more of psychological pressure. Todays students lack of lief experience,live a long time in foreign country, the kind of homesickness and persistent loneliness, not everyone can handle! On the other hand,study abroad is expensive.A lot of families do not have this ability. Its difficult to adapt to the local customs and hard to commuication with other People. So I think that when students have a Strong physique, positive attitude and good ability to adapt, they can consider to study abroad.

As we know,There is denying that there are many advantages in study abroad . In my opinion.For some wealthy families, they can afford the expensive in foreign countries.Due to the rapid development of economy in recent years, more People study abroad has became an inevtable trend.

If I have the chance to go abroad to study, I want to go to USA. First of all.I Will learn the local language,so that i can solve the language barrier. Then, I Will choose the computer professional.I must be hardworking,because my goal is to get a masters degree. Then, IWill work for a few yeas after I graduate.It can help me to accumulate experience, and then,I Will go to the famous city Silicon Valley of America to apply for a technical staff. But I cant stay in a foreign countries all the time. In order to serve the motherland,i Will return to our ”Big House" when I become a good technical personnel. I believe that many People dream to study abroad. I am no exception! There are many good things waiting for us to discover in the world ! So I want to go abroad. In this way ,I can learn more knowledge and culture.

Last year, I went to Guilin for travel, it was a great trip for me. I not

only had a look at the beautiful scenery, but also made friends. I knew a lovely

girl from America, we met each other on the train. As we were almost at the same

age, we communicated a lot. We shared our opinion about the culture and learned

a lot. When our train reached the destination, we needed to separate, we

promised to keep in touch by the Internet. Now a year has passed, we make our

promise and keep in touch all the time. I have improved my English and she is so

interested in China. It seems that we can never finish our topic, because we

always have so much to share with each other. I am so lucky to make a good

friend.

MySpringFestival Last year’s Spring Festival is special. My uncle and my

aunt came back from Shanghai. My family were very happy to keep the Spring

Festival with them. And it was the most exciting festival of all the festivals.

On New Year’s Eve, my father and my uncle talked about their work together. My

mum did some cooking with my aunt Grandparents and I watched the New Year TV

programmes. At about six o’clock, we had a special family dinner. We all thought

the dumplings were delicious. On the first day of the New Year, we visited our

relatives. In the afternoon, we went shopping in Jiefanf Road. My uncle bought

some Jay’s CDs. He likes Jay’s music very much. There were so many people on the

road. It was more alive than any other time of a year. On the second and the

third days, we spent a wonderful weekend in the country. There were much bigger

trees than in the city. And the animals were more beautiful than in the city. We

all enjoyed ourselves. I had an interesting Spring Festival. How about you?
