他咽气之前,把徒弟叫到面前说:徒儿啊,我还有武松打虎沒有画,你要在我死后把画完成.你一定要到后山上去找到老虎,看仔细了再动笔.他说完便断了气.

徒弟遵照师傅的嘱咐,带着干粮和防身的刀棍便到山上寻虎去了.可是,他找了数天也沒找到,有些灰心丧气.这一天他遇見一个小和尚,说明来意.小和尚听后笑笑说:这有何难,你去找只猫不就行了吗?它俩长得一样.

徒弟说:猫太小了.小和尚说:画大一些不就行了吗?再说,猫还是老虎的师傅呢!你照猫画虎准成.

徒弟觉得有理,就回家找了一只大黄猫,照着样子把虎画成了.他终于完成了任务,画成了一幅武松打虎图,把一百零八位好汉图挂了出来.

有个文人看了后,在武松打虎图边上题词道:佳作名画,一百担八将个个英雄.唯有武二郎误把黄猫作虎.

从此,照猫画虎的故事传开了,成了一句俗语,专门形容那些做事不深入实际,敷衍塞责的人.
