八达岭长城， 地势险峻，依山而建，是明朝京城的北大门和军事要地，它包括关城 和城体及敌台、墙台、烽火台等，关城总面积约5000平方米。这一段 长城墙身高大坚固，重要隘口修筑有“内三关”，“外三关”，为驻 防重地。墙体用长方形大条石砌筑，上面垒砌特制的大城，砖墙身平 均高度近8米，墙顶用方砖铺砌宽约6米，可容5马并驰，10人并行。 墙顶外侧筑有高1。7米的垛口，上有了望孔，下有射口。内侧筑有起护 栏作用的宇墙，城墙每300-500米筑有堡垒工的方形城台，有的为楼 层建筑，上有了望也和射口，下层有券洞，供守城军士住宿，储存军 械食粮。在长城沿线的险要处和交通要道上筑有碉堡、烽火台。遇到 敌情，烽火台可传递情报，发号施令。

八达岭海拔1000米，绵延曲折的长城如巨龙腾飞于重山峻岭之上， 这座巨大，浩瀚的工程，它不仅是中华民族勤劳、智慧的结晶，也是古代建筑工程的杰出代表。

在八达岭南10多公里有居庸关，是著名古关城。居庸关位于北京 北郊昌平县南口以北，距北京市区约50公里。它是太行山八大关隘之 一，东接燕山支脉军都山。这里早在汉代已是通向蒙古高原的交通咽 喉，公元5世纪北魏时在此建城筑关。明代再此构筑关城并设水、陆 两道关门派重兵把守，现存明代人工关城和关门以及元代城中塔基它 是用汉白玉筑成的，远望如云，故后人称云台。台顶长25。8米，宽 12。 9米，其上有大殿柱，基四周有汉白玉火焰柱栏，栏下有排水装两 用的石雕龙台。台下券门洞口有童国骑兽、金翅鸟、蟠龙、鲸鱼、大 象等浮雕，门洞内布满精美的千佛，天王等浮雕，以及珍贵的梵、 蒙、维、汉、西夏等6体经文。关北有阅武场遗址。附近青龙桥火车站有我国铁路工程师詹天佑墓园、纪念馆。
