1.曾参杀猪

曾参，春秋末期鲁国有名的思想家、儒学家，是孔子门生中七十二贤之一。他博学多才，且十分注重修身养性，德行高尚。

一次，他的妻子要到集市上办事，年幼的孩子吵着要去。曾参的妻子不愿带孩子去，便对他说：“你在家好好玩，等妈妈回来，将家里的猪杀了煮肉给你吃。”孩子听了，非常高兴，不再吵着要去集市了。这话本是哄孩子说着玩的，过后，曾参的妻子便忘了。

不料，曾参却真的把家里的一头猪杀了。妻子看到曾参把猪杀了，就说，“我是为了让孩子安心地在家里等着，才说等赶集回来把猪杀了烧肉给他吃的，你怎么当真呢。”

曾参说：“孩子是不能欺骗的。孩子年纪小，不懂世事，只得学习别人的样子，尤其是以父母作为生活的榜样。今天你欺骗了孩子，玷污了他的心灵，明天孩子就会欺骗你、欺骗别人;今天你在孩子面前言而无信，明天孩子就会不再信任你，你看这危害有多大呀。”

春秋战国时，秦国的商鞅在秦孝公的支持下主持变法。当时处于战争频繁、人心惶惶之际，为了树立威信，推进改革，商鞅下令在都城南门外立一根三丈长的木头，并当众许下诺言：谁能把这根木头搬到北门，赏金十两。围观的人不相信如此轻而易举的事能得到如此高的赏赐，结果没人肯出手一试。于是，商鞅将赏金提高到50金。重赏之下必有勇夫，终于有人站起将木头扛到了北门。商鞅立即赏了他五十金。商鞅这一举动，在百姓心中树立起了威信，而商鞅接下来的变法就很快在秦国推广开了。新法使秦国渐渐强盛，最终统一了中国。

而同样在商鞅“立木为信”的地方，在早它400年以前，却曾发生过一场令人啼笑皆非的“烽火戏诸侯”的闹剧。

周幽王有个宠妃叫褒姒，为博取她的一笑，周幽王下令在都城附近20多座烽火台上点起烽火——烽火是边关报警的信号，只有在外敌入侵需召诸侯来救援的时候才能点燃。结果诸侯们见到烽火，率领兵将们匆匆赶到，弄明白这是君王为博妻一笑的花招后又愤然离去。褒姒看到平日威仪赫赫的诸侯们手足无措的样子，终于开心一笑。五年后，酉夷太戎大举攻周，幽王烽火再燃而诸侯未到——谁也不愿再上第二次当了。结果幽王被逼自刎而褒姒也被俘虏。

一个“立木取信”，一诺千金;一个帝王无信，戏玩“狼来了”的游戏。结果前者变法成功，国强势壮;后者自取其辱，身死国亡。可见，“信”对一个国家的兴衰存亡都起着非常重要的作用。

秦末有个叫季布的人，一向说话算数，信誉非常高，许多人都同他建立起了浓厚的友情。当时甚至流传着这样的谚语：“得黄金百斤，不如得季布一诺。”(这就是成语“一诺千斤”的由来)后来，他得罪了汉高祖刘邦，被悬赏捉拿。结果他的旧日的朋友不仅不被重金所惑，而且冒着灭九族的危险来保护他，缍使他免遭祸殃。一个人诚实有信，自然得道多助，能获得大家的尊重和友谊。反过来，如果贪图一时的安逸或小便宜，而失信于朋友，表面上是得到了“实惠”。但为了这点实惠他毁了自己的声誉而声誉相比于物质是重要得多的。所以，失信于朋友，无异于失去了西瓜捡芝麻，得不偿失的。

4.推心置腹

为了壮大自己的实力, 扩大自己的影响, 刘秀决定收编这一大批人马, 并把投降的起义军首领封为列侯。但是, 这些首领心存疑虑, 不相信刘秀会信任他们。刘秀了解到他们的心思, 就让他们各自回营, 照样带领自己的部下; 刘秀骑着马, 只带几名随从, 到一个一个军营去慰问他们。

这些投降的将领见刘秀这样毫无戒心地对待他们、关怀他们, 感动地说:“萧王如此推心置腹, 我们怎能不为他卖命呢!”

刘秀见他们都已经打心里服了自己, 就把他们分别安排为自己将领的部下。这样, 他一下子就增加了数十万人马。关西那一带原来只知道铜马, 现在都把刘秀说成是“铜马皇帝”。

5.信誓旦旦

春秋时, 有个男子, 爱上一位天真美丽的姑娘。他借换丝的名义向姑娘求婚, 并发誓真心爱她, 永不反悔。

纯朴善良的姑娘信以为真, 答应秋后与他结婚。婚后, 妻子对丈夫真心诚意, 但是丈夫却变了心, 百般虐待她。后来, 那男子竟狠心地将她遗弃, 她在痛苦中回忆起以往的种种情景, 内心无比愤恨, 怨恨地控诉说:“ 当初你说白头到老, 现在一回忆起这话就使我怨恨。滔滔的淇水再宽也有个岸, 湿湿的洼再阔也有个边。当初我和你一起嬉戏, 说说笑笑多么欢快。当年你信誓旦旦, 没想到如今你反复无常把心变。我恨你变心不念旧, 只好一刀两断把事情了结!”

6.实事求是

刘德是西汉时期汉景帝刘启的儿子, 为栗姬所生, 被封为河间王( 封地在今河北河间县一带)。据传, 刘德酷爱藏书, 他从民间收集了很多先秦时期的著作。刘德对收集到的古书, 能够认真研究和整理, 很多学者都愿意和他一起研究学问, 甚至皇帝和官府中的学者, 对他的学识和治学态度都很佩服。

东汉史学家、文学家班固, 在撰写《汉书》时, 专门为刘德写了传记《河间献王传》, 对刘德的研究精神作了高度的评价, 文中说:“ 修学好古, 实事求是。从民得善书, 必为好写与之, 留其真。”成语“实事求是”即由此而来。

7.移木建信

战国时，商鞅准备在秦国变法，惟恐老百姓不信，于是命人在都城的一个城门前，放了一根高三丈长的木柱，并到处张贴告示："谁能把城门前那根木头搬走，官府就赏他五十金。"老百姓看到告示后议论纷纷。大家怀疑这是骗人的举动，但一个年轻力壮、膀大腰圆的小伙子说："让我试试看吧!我去把城门那木头搬走，要是官府赏钱，就说明他们还讲信用，往后咱们就听他们的;如果不赏给，就说明他们是愚弄百姓。他们往后说得再好，我们也不信他们那一套了。"说罢来到城门前把那根木头搬走了。

商鞅听到这一消息，马上命令赏给那人五十金。那位壮汉看到自己果真得到了五十金，不禁开怀大笑，一边炫耀那五十金，一边对围观的老百姓说："看来官府还是讲信用的啊!"

这事一传十，十传百，不久就传遍了整个秦国，商鞅这才下令变法。

屈原是战国时期出国人，很有学问。他在楚王身边做官，以形象是自己的国家富强起来。昏君楚王却听信奸臣的话，把屈原削职流放。在流放中，屈原听说楚国的都城被敌人占领，百姓遭难，悲愤极了。五月初五这一天，他来到汨罗江边，怀抱一块石头，以纵身跳入汨罗江中。出国的百姓听到屈原投江的消息，都十分悲痛。他们含着泪划着船赶来打捞屈原，还把粽子扔到江里喂鱼，希望鱼儿不要伤害屈原的身体。这就是五月端阳包粽子的来历。

端午节还有许多有趣的活动。列如赛龙舟，挂香囊，香囊内有朱砂、雄黄、香药，外包以丝布，清香四溢，再以五色丝线弦扣成索，作各种不同形状，结成一串，形形色色，玲珑夺目。还有挂艾叶、菖蒲的习惯。

端午节的活动可真多啊!

There are many animals in nature, swimming in water, running on land, flying in the air, and I like the most animal on land, the elephant.

I know the information of the elephant very well. It has a huge body, and even the lions and tigers are so frightened that they are afraid of it. Its stout, very heavy, and its not very fast. Its nose is very long, the heavy object will be lifted easily by it, and it can suck a lot of water. It sprays up as if a fountain is spraying. It is generous of ears, like two huge fan, it can use the ears fan when hot, very cool. The tail is very thick, like a thick and long whip.

Eleven, I have a chance to visit the world park in Beijing. I finally saw the elephant, although it is the same as I think, but they are flexible to my surprise, they can walk about sixty cm wide bridge. They are so smart that they can understand the words of the professional and do what they do. Its really interesting.

Through my trip to Beijing, I know more about elephants and more like elephants.

Lantern Festival The 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the Chinese Lantern

Festival because the first lunar month is called yuan-month and in the ancient

times people called night Xiao. The 15th day is the first night to see a full

moon. So the day is also called Yuan Xiao Festival in China. According to the

Chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright

full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns

hung out for people to appreciate. At this time, people will try to solve the

puzzles on the lanterns and eat yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) and get all their

families united in the joyful atmosphere.

小金鱼游呀游，它先游到了一条小河。哇!河水清澈见底，还有其他好多小鱼，小虾，螃蟹，在河水里自由自在地嬉戏着。小金鱼忙上前和大家问好，打招呼：“嗨!大家好，我是新来的，很高兴能和你们相识。”大家都一溜烟似的游了过来，都来看这个新朋友。它们大家相互介绍着，很快小金鱼就和大家混得很熟了。大家在水里唱呀，跳呀，尽情地玩耍着，为迎接这个新朋友，它们还各自拿出自己最好的东西给小金鱼吃，小金鱼道谢过后，就大口大口的吃了起来，毕竟，游了一天了，确实肚子也饿了，也该填填那空空的肚子了。

它们玩好后，小金鱼要依依不舍得和新朋友告别了，重新踏上旅程，去寻找下一个景点。

I have many cousins. I like Stella best. She is a pretty girl. She likes eating cucumbers , eggplants, cabbages… She doesn’t like eating eggs and milk. So she is very short.

Stella is an excellent student . She is the monitor of her class. She likes studying and she studd. So she is always the top student in her class.

In this summer holiday , I spent a very happy time with her in Sichuan . I often miss her very much.

As for me, I have a special emotion to autumn. Autumn always gives me a

kind of feeling which can make me forget sorrow. Every time when autumn comes, I

am always glad to feel the beautiful season. I can enjoy myself in this great

season.

I like the wind of autumn. It is cool and comfortable. When the wind kisses

my face, I will close my eyes and smile. I know that wind brings me the breath

of autumn. She lets me understand that autumn is full of happiness. I can smell

and taste autumn everywhere. The view of the autumn will give me a huge

enjoyment. As for me, the wind in autumn is the best present. I am deeply

attracted by the autumn wind. This taste of autumn is delicious.

I also love autumn colors. The leaves will turn yellow in autumn. This kind

of yellow represents hope and maturity. When I see these yellow leaves, I will

think that they still enter into the soil and will give the tree adequate

nutrition. Thus, they never leave the tree. I am moved by this sentiment. This

phenomenon gives me many thoughts about human society. I believe that our

society will have a better development if we realize that we should have a

grateful heart. Autumn colors are so magical for me. They let me have bigger

imagination space to think over life. I know this taste of autumn is sweet.

I really appreciate autumn quality. In my eyes, autumn is just a mature

person. And her love requires no return. In this season, when I walk on the way,

I can feel her sincerity and her firmness. Although she can’t speak one word, I

can learn something from her. This taste of autumn is pregnant and

attractive.

Autumn is my favorite season and I will go on to feel autumn. Autumn also

makes me have a deeper understanding of cherishing everything that I have

now.

In the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Ping of Chu was misled by slanderers, and had Wu Zixu"s father executed. Wu Zixu fled to the State of Wu. More than then years later, Wu Zixu took his revenge by helping. Wu conquer Chu. Yet he suffered agonies of remorse, because his countrymen called him a traitor. He protested, "I"m just like a traveller. It"s already late, but I still have a long way to go. I simply dont know what to do."

This idiom comes from the above story. It means being in a very difficult situation at the end of one"s tether.

Dear Sir,

I am writing to apply for a British Council scholarship to study in Britain. I did my five years basic training in medicine at Shanghai University. After this I successfully completed a one-year postgraduate course in Ophthalmology at the Peoples General Hospital, where I am at present serving a two-year probation in the Eye Clinic.

As a result of the publication in 2003 of my article in New Scientist entitled "Soft and Rigid Contact Lenses ", which was based on a survey of 37 patients over 6 months, I made contact with Dr. Li Ming of the Capital Hospital and Dr. Ma Li of the University College Hospital. I have received their help and advice with my current research project, which is a two-year survey of the acceptance of various types of contact lenses in 200 patients.

Despite their help, I feel that I cannot make real progress in this field unless I can actually have day-to-day contact with these specialists. I would therefore like to continue my research at either the Capital Hospital or the UCH as soon as my probationary period here is completed, and I would like to study in Britain for two years.

I enclose a detailed curriculum vitae and an offprint of my article, together with two letters of recommendation from Dr. Li Ming and Dr. Ma Li.
