皖北的年夜饭必须在大年三十中午十二点之前完成。在古代，过了正午还没有吃上年饭都是揭不开锅的穷苦人家，所以在一年中的最后一天，忙忙碌碌一年的人们想方设法也要吃上一顿饱饭，而对于饿了一年的人们来说，早一点吃饱代表着下一年都能吃饱穿暖。现在这个习俗一直在延续，往往才九、十点钟，就有手脚麻利的主妇做了满满一大桌子美味佳肴。

年三十的晚上，要吃扁食。这是一种像元宝一样的食品，里面包上韭菜、鸡蛋等素食，既和中午的大鱼大肉营养搭配，也是寓意来年发财的意思。

大家初一吃饺子，“更岁交子”之意，“子”为“子时”，交与“饺”谐音，有“喜庆团圆”和“吉祥如意”的意思。

皖北的春节要一直过到正月十五元宵节才算结束，在这里，正月十五还有一个独特的习俗—蒸面灯。十五这天，早早的，妈妈们便用豆面揉好面焖在锅中，到了下午，面发起后，开始捏一个个小面灯。手巧的人家还会捏出龙灯灯、鸡灯灯、兔子灯等生肖灯。

把捏好的面灯放进锅里蒸，蒸完后，有的面灯窝窝里有蒸馏水，有的很多，有的少，还有的却干干净净，滴水不见？据说，这是个很灵验的预言呢，存水的那个月份灯会被认为代表着来年那个月份里一定雨水充沛，水多的可能会有涝情，水少的当然就代表干旱了。

把面灯里放上香油，用棉线做出捻子，点亮的面灯好漂亮！我们会端着灯在屋子里四处照照，照到的地方毒虫、臭虫什么的就都不敢出来了。大人们还会用灯在我们小孩子的全身上下照上一照，说是一年内保管百病全无，吉祥如意。面灯点着可不能吹灭哟，要让它自己燃尽，因为红红的灯火代表着我们的生活会越来越旺，越来越红火。
