"An illusory snake in a goblet" is used to describe the psychological state of being frightened caused by taking illusions as reality.

In Jin Dynasty there was a man named Yue Guang who was fond of drinking alcohol.

晋朝有个叫乐(yuè)广的人，爱喝酒。

One day, he invited a friend to his house to drink together.

一天，他邀请朋友到家里来对斟（zhēn)对饮。

Suddenly, his friend saw the reflection of a snack swimming in the goblet.

忽然，朋友看见酒杯里有条蛇影在游动。

He got so much frightened that he took ill on bed after getting home.

他受了惊吓，回去便一病不起。

And neither any doctor or any medicine could cure his illness.

请医服药，都无起色。

Yue Guang came to see him and asked about the cause of his disease.

乐广跑来看他，问明起病的缘由。

When he got to know the cause, he pulled his friend from the bed immdiately and took him to his house.

乐广听后一把拉起朋友往家走。

Yue Guang made his friend sit where he used to, pouring a goblet of alcohol for him, and asked him," Is there any snake reflection in the goblet?"

他让朋友坐在原处，斟满酒问：“有蛇影吗？”

There was still a "snake reflection" in the goblet! Yue casually took away the bow hanging on the wall.

杯子里还有“蛇影”！乐广随手取下墙上的弓。

This time, the "snake reflection" disappeared.

这次，“蛇影”不见了！

"So it was the bow reflection that was in the goblet!" His friend at once got well from his illness.

“杯子里原来是弓影呀！”朋友的病情顿时好了！

A great and wise man once called one of his workmen to him saying, "Go into the far country and build for me a house. The decisions of planning and of actual construction will be yours, but remember, I shall come to accept your work for a very special friend of mine."

And so the workman departed with a light heart for his field of labor. Material of all kinds was plentiful here, but the workman had a mind of his own. "Surely," he thought, "I know my business. How much like man. He comes to earth a stranger. He has his free agency. He may build as he likes. But on the morning of his resurrection he will receive what he has built for an eternal home and habitation.

One day,a little monkey is playing by the well.

He looks in the well and shouts,“Oh!My god!The moon has fallen into the well!”

An older monkeys runs over, takes a look,and says,“Goodness me!The moon is really in the water!”

And olderly monkey comes over.He is very surprised as well and cries out,“The moon is in the well.”

A group of monkeys run over to the well.

They look at the moon in the well and shout:“The moon did fall into the well!Come on!Letget it out!”

Then,the oldest monkey hangs on the tree up side down,with his feet on the branch.And he pulls the next monkeys feet with his hands.

All the other monkeys follow his suit.And they join each other one by one down to the moon in the well.

Just before they reach the moon,the oldest monkey raises his head and happens to see the moon in the sky.

He yells excitedly “Dont be so foolish!The moon is still in the sky!”

正好他们摸到月亮的时候，老猴子抬头发现月亮挂在天上呢。

它兴奋地大叫：“别蠢了!月亮还好好地挂在天上呢!”

早在青年时代，毛泽东就接触到英语。1910年毛泽东离开韶山老家，进入湘乡县城新式学堂——东山小学堂读书，那里有一个从日本留学回来的老师，教英语。所以，毛泽东是在17岁那年开始学习英语的。不过，在随后的革命战争年代，留给毛泽东学习英语的时间并不多，但只要有机会，他会抓紧时间“重操旧业”。

“拍拍-太根儿!”

抗战胜利后，面对由美国撑腰、武装到牙齿的国民党部队，中国共产党没有被“威慑”住。1946年8月6日下午，毛泽东在延安窑洞前半山坡平台上的一个小石桌旁，会见了美国女记者斯特朗。他谈笑风生，纵论天下。交谈中，毛泽东把身子向后一仰，开怀地得出结论：“美国反动派是……”他停顿了一下，显然是在找合适的词，“纸老虎。”因为英语里没有相对应之词，翻译只好将它译成了“scarecrow(稻草人)”。毛泽东让翻译停下来，要斯特朗解释“scarecrow”是什么意思。斯特朗回答说，那是用稻草扎成的人形，农民把它竖到田里来吓唬乌鸦。毛泽东立即表示这样译不好，这不是他的意思。他说，纸老虎并不是吓唬乌鸦的死东西，它是用来吓唬孩子的。它看起来像一只凶猛的野兽，但实际上是纸糊的，一受潮就会发软，一阵大雨就会把它冲掉。

于是，由“纸(paper)”和“老虎(tiger)”这两个单词组合，临时造出的一个英语中没有的复合词“paper-tiger”就出现了，这实际上是硬译。毛泽东高兴地笑了，用带着浓重湖南腔的英语说：“拍拍-太根儿!”“paper-tiger”后来便随着毛泽东的着名论断，在全世界广泛流传了，它也成了毛泽东最喜欢说的一个英语单词。

1954年正式提出学习英文

一直到新中国成立以后，毛泽东提倡干部学习外文。这时有了非常好的条件，学英文才成为他的一种爱好。1954年，林克(毛泽东英文秘书)到他身边工作时，毛泽东正式提出要向林克学习英文。但毛泽东并不使用英语教科书循序渐进地“上课”，而是自己设计了一种独特的“学英文”方式：念英语文章，一个词、一个词地查字典对照着念。毛泽东那时熟悉的英文词语并不多，于是先从阅读英文版《人民中国》、《北京周报》短文，新华社的英文新闻稿入手。众所周知，这种学英语的方法效率并不高，只有“吃力不讨好”，随读随忘记。但是毛泽东一意孤行。

上世纪五六十年代，毛泽东学习英语的兴致最高。他在国内巡视工作期间，无论在火车上、轮船上，随时都用自己的方式“学习英语”。1960年的《莫斯科会议声明》发表以后，他写信问林克：“莫斯科声明英文译本出版了没有?请你找两本来，我准备和你对读一遍。”如此这般将英文译本“对读一遍”，毛泽东遇到不少困难，生词很多。但毛泽东不畏困难。

毛泽东在外国人面前“秀”英语

毛泽东与外国人会面的时候，还喜欢“秀”一把英语。

1970年12月18日凌晨7时许，毛泽东身着睡衣，膝盖上盖着一条毛毯，在中南海住处与美国记者斯诺海阔天空的谈话持续了整整5个小时，一直到午后1点钟。进“早餐”的时候，毛泽东宴请斯诺，王海容(记录)、唐闻生(翻译)作陪。宾主入座，毛泽东起立与斯诺热情碰杯。斯诺用中文祝酒：“毛主席万岁!” 毛泽东则用英语回应：“Long live Snow (斯诺万岁)!”毛泽东接着又跟坐在自己身旁的王海容、唐闻生碰杯，然后对斯诺幽默地说：“我看你这个说了半天 woman(妇女)解放的人就是不尊重 woman，你都不跟她们碰杯……”

“毛泽东学英语处”

有着“天下第一名园”美誉的杭州刘庄，有一座傍水而建的精致小楼，是毛泽东来杭州多次住过的一号楼，人们称作“主席楼”。在“主席楼”后面一条小路旁的树阴下，有一块秀石，上书“毛泽东学英语处”几个红字。有张毛泽东与林克一起学习英语的照片作为佐证，这可能是全国唯一一个纪念毛泽东学英语的地方，也成为了西湖一景。旁边一块低矮的石头表面已有些光滑，显然是由于游人坐在这里拍照留念久而久之被磨光的。

1975年除夕——毛泽东最后的英文水平

1975年12月31日子夜，毛泽东会见了美国前总统尼克松的女儿朱莉和女婿戴维。

这两名美国青年注意到，在他们面前，82岁的毛泽东尽管已被疾病折磨得精疲力尽，“斗争”的话题却使他又“像青年人那样兴奋起来，他的头脑甚至比中国的年轻一辈更充满活力，更渴望斗争”。

毛泽东说：“我们这里有阶级斗争，八亿人口，不斗行吗?”并且用他的湖南腔调的发音着重说出了英语：“Class struggle!”

Class struggle这两个英文单词，既代表了毛泽东最后的英文水平，也代表了毛泽东的一生。

Sam is a little fish. He lives in the sea. He is very lonely. He wants to have a friend. The friend looks like him. Sam sees an ink fish. The ink fish has eight legs. He doesn’t look like Sam. So Sam goes away.

Sam meets a shark. He wants to say hello to the shark. The shark opens his big mouth. Sam runs away quickly.

Sam is tired and hungry. He wants to have a rest. Then he sees a round fish. She says to him. “Hello! Would you like to be my friend?”

Sam answers: “Of course! But you are round. I am flat.” The round fish days: “But we are both fishes.”

Sam thinks and says, “You are right. Let’s be friends.” They become good friends.

Highly Talented

Tsau Pi and Tsau Jr were sons of Tsau Tsau. Both were very gifted writers, and Tsau Jr was especially quick-witted.

After Tsau Tsaus death, Tsau Pi took over the throne of the kingdom of wei. Jealous of Tsau Jrs literary ability, and afraid that he might cause problems, Tsau Pi was always looking for a way to kill his brother.

One day, Tsau Pi called Tsau Jr into see him.He ordered his brother to make up a poem within the time it took to walk seven steps, adding that if he could not, his life would be in danger.

Greatly saddened, Tsau Jr began to walk and to think. Before he had taken the seven steps, he had already finished his poem, the meaning of which was: "Brothers are of the same family, so why should the oppress each other?"

Tsau Jr was very intelligent and loved to study. He wrote many outstanding articles which showed his artistic talent and earned him the admiration of many people. One scholar said of him: "Heaven gave the world ten decalitres of talent, and Tsau Jr alone has eight of them."

Today, to say that a person "has eight decalitres of talent" is to say that he has a great aptitude for writing.

才高八斗

曹丕与曹植都是曹操的儿子，二者均有才华，特别是曹植更具文采。

在曹操，死后，曹丕继任大统，但他嫉妒曹植的才华，同时也惧怕曹植回谋反，所以一直在伺机杀害曹植。

有一天，曹丕要求接见曹植，他要求曹植在他七步之内作诗一首，如果做不到，就会有生命危险。

悲愤之下，曹植急中生智，作出七步诗，是的意思就是“本来就是亲兄弟，为什么要这样步步紧逼，伤及感情？”

曹植文采俱佳，热爱学习，他曾做过不少才华横溢的文赋，均令世人感叹不已。曾有一位学者说道：“如若天下文采共有十斗，曹植一人独占八斗。”

今天，如果我们说一个人“才高八斗”，就是指他“才华横溢，很有文采”。

父子二人经过五星级饭店门口，看到一辆十分豪华的进口轿车。

儿子不屑地对他的父亲说：「坐这种车的人，肚子里一定没有学问!」

父亲则轻描淡写地回答：说这种话的人，口袋里一定没有钱

雄鹰

A boy found an eagles egg and he put it in the nest of a prairie chicken. The eagle hatched and thought he was a chicken. He grew up doing what prairie chicken do-scratching at the dirt for food and flying short distances with a noisy fluttering of wings. It was a dreary life. Gradually the eagle grew older and bitter. One day he and his prairie chicken friend saw a beautiful bird soaring on the currents of air, high above the mountains.

"Oh, I wish I could fly like that!" said the eagle. The chicken replied, "Dont give it another thought. Thats the mighty eagle, the king of all birds-you could never be like him!" And the eagle didnt give it another thought. He went on cackling and complaining about life. He died thinking he was a prairie chicken. My friends, you too were born an eagle. The Creator intended you to be an eagle, so don’t listen to the prairie chickens!

“哦，我要能飞的那么高该多好啊！”鹰说。山鸡回答说，“不要想了，那是凶猛无比的鹰，鸟中之王---你不可能像他一样！”于是鹰放弃了那个念头。他继续咯咯地叫，不停的抱怨生活。最后他死了，依然认为自己是一只山鸡。朋友们，你们天生就是雄鹰。造物主有意把你造就成一只雄鹰，所以不要听信山鸡的话！
