The Origin of Halloween

While there are many versions of the origins and old customs of Halloween, some remain consistent by all accounts. Different cultures view Holloween somewhat differently but traditional Halloween practices remain the same.

Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead.

Samhain signifies "summers end" or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.

The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating.

竞争是比赛，是与他人比较的方式。竞争像一面镜子，镜子里映照出人们的优点和缺点，于是人们就可以发展自己的优势，弥补自己的缺点。镜子里同样映照出他人优点和缺点，于是人们就可以从他人的优点中获得启示，在他人的缺点中吸取教训。镜子里有自己，有他人，在与他人的比较中就找到了差距，于是人们从差距中得到了危机意识，从而发奋图强。

曾经的中国市场发展停滞，没有活力，后来中国加入了世界贸易组织，中国的商品市场一下子有了强大的竞争对手，尽管世界的浪潮险些淹没了中国市场经济，但最终“国产”还是在世界的浪潮中站稳了脚跟，带领中国进一步走向富强。中国正是在竞争这面镜子里，找到了自己的优点缺点和与世界品牌的差距，中国市场的活力才迸发出来，重新焕发生机，静滞的水才流淌开来，奔涌而成江河。中国如此，世界何尝不是这样?若没有竞争，世界又会是怎样一副局面?

我们是水，合作让我们汇聚，竞争使我们流淌。正如江河有水的汇聚和流淌才叫江河，世界同样不可缺少合作与竞争这两种力量。
