燕园中未名湖景致的美已叫很多人为之称道，未名湖的桥虽只是作为点缀但其中也大有文章，只有仔细观察才能发现它的精妙之处。

未名湖的桥大体上分为两种，其中一种就是拱桥。例如二分桥，这座单孔石拱桥坐落在未名湖的南边小岛上。其桥长8。1m，宽2。95m，短、窄、小，又与周围景物融为了一体，远看丝毫不打眼。但走近看就会发现桥上栏杆雕刻十分精美，石柱是待放的莲花形，石栏上刻有祥云图样的浮雕，为桥身增添了一份古朴的气息。二分桥不仅有观赏性，也极具实用性。“虹桥分水态，镜石引菱光”，二分桥将未名湖巧妙地分为大小两个湖面，这也是它得名“二分”的原因了。它桥面平缓，便于通行，每天都有许多北大学子从此匆匆而过。

另一种桥就是平桥了。桥梁学家茅以升曾把桥比作板凳，板凳的腿就是“桥墩”，桥墩下面，伸入土中的“脚”，就是“基础”，板凳的板就是“桥梁”。平桥结构就与之类似。比如回头桥，又名方外观西式平桥，通向未名湖湖心岛的桥，位于湖心岛之北。回头桥桥为五孔，桥墩上部有汉白玉石雕西式番草。桥面为平板束腰式，中腰宽355厘米，两端宽730厘米，桥板长925厘米，利于通行。回头桥历史悠久，建于清朝，是乾隆帝特意为香妃所建，原为圆明园西洋楼方外观门前之溪桥，桥面原有西式石栏杆，今已无存，可以算是圆明园的遗迹了。同样奈钟亭西面路上通向红楼的奈何桥也是平板桥。
