正史记载，“古尔邦”在阿拉伯语中称作尔德·古尔邦或称为尔德·阿祖哈。拉丁文称为‘īdu A??ā .“尔德”是中文“节日”的音译。亦称古尔邦节(Id Qurban)、“忠孝节”、“尔德节”或“古尔巴尼”.意为“献祭”“献牲”含有“牺牲”“献身”.所以一般把这个节日称作“牺牲节”或“宰牲节”.也译作“库尔班”的，为朝觐功课的重要仪式之一。(《伊斯兰百科全书》)

古尔邦节(意译为宰牲节)，又称“大节”,是伊斯兰教重要节日之一。在伊斯兰历每年的12月10日，麦加朝圣过后。据古兰经记载，即先知伊卜拉欣直到晚年也没有儿子。他祈求真主安拉赐给他一个儿子。不久，伊卜拉欣果然有了儿子，他衷心感谢真主的恩赐，精心抚养幼子。十几年后的一天夜里，伊卜拉欣作了一个梦，梦见真主安拉命令他把心爱的儿子宰掉献祭以考验他的诚心。伊卜拉欣惟命是从毫无迟疑，他懂事的儿子也毫无惧色并鼓励父亲宰己献祭。于是，伊卜拉欣作着宰子的准备。伊卜拉欣把刀磨得闪闪发光，非常锋利。当伊斯玛仪侧卧后，他把刀架在儿子的喉头上。这时他伤心痛哭，泪如溪流。第一刀下去只在儿子的脖子上留下了一个白印印，第二刀下去刮破了一点皮。伊斯玛仪说：“我的父啊，你把我翻个身，让我匍匐而卧，这样你就下决心吧，顺从真主的命令。”伊卜拉欣听了儿子的劝言，把他翻了个身，然后解下刀子使劲宰时，真主让伊卜拉欣刀下留人，派天仙吉卜热依勒背来一只黑头羝羊作为祭献，代替了伊斯玛仪。这时伊卜拉欣拿起刀子，按住羊的喉头一宰，羊便倒了。当伊斯兰教创立后，穆斯林们承认伊卜拉欣并尊为圣祖，每年的这一天，便形成了宰牲献祭的习俗沿袭至今，成为所有信伊斯兰教(安拉)的人们的传统节日之一。(《阿拉伯语词典》)
