What is April Fools Day and how did it begin? Well, that is a very good question. The origin of this holiday is rather uncertain. However, the common belief holds that during the reformation of the calendar the date for the New Year was moved from April 1st to January 1st. During that time in history there was no television and no radio so word spread slowly. There were also those who chose to simply ignore the change and those who merely forgot. Thanks for your last letter. Im so glad that you have been able (at last! ) to arrange a holiday in Australia. As I fear I wont be able to meet you at the airport when you arrive, nor will I be able to be home until later in the afternoon, so here are some instructions and suggestions.

There is a bus from the airport to the city. It is much cheaper than a cab. Take the bus to the city and ask to get off at Town Hall railway station.

To get to my place in the eastern suburbs you have three options. You can either take a cab, a bus or the train. I suggest you take the train, since the airport bus will leave you right at the station. Get off at Cliff Station. From there you can either walk to my place (about ten minutes) or take a taxi. Probably you should take a taxi as you will have luggage.

When you arrive at my flat, ring the intercom for Flat 2. My friend Lillian will be at home and she will open the front door for you and let you into my flat.

Presumably you will be tired and want to sleep. But if you feel like some exercise after that long flight, you could stroll down to Cooper Park, which is only ten minutes away ? you can see it from the window.

二、细节描写要真实

真实，是指细节描写能够精确而又惟妙惟肖地反映现实生活中的人、事的特征。好的细节一定来源于生活，而且必须是细心观察的人才能捕捉到。如朱自清在《背影》中对父亲爬月台时吃力的样子和动作的描写，突出了父亲对“我”无私的爱，让每个读者感动不已。若没有作者的细致观察和准确表达，恐怕难以收到这样的艺术效果。

三、细节描写要典型

典型，是指描写的细节，具有广泛的代表性，能够通过个别的、细小的事物，反映一般与全貌，能够由现象揭示本质。典型，就是要善于抓住最能反映人物的性格，表现文章中心的细节来写。如鲁迅的《阿Q正传》中有一段阿Q临刑前画押的细节描写：“要画圆圈了，那手捏着笔却只是抖，于是那人替他将纸铺在地上，阿Q伏下去，使尽平生的力画圆圈。他生怕被人笑话，立志要画得圆，但这可恶的笔不但很沉重，并且不听话，刚刚一抖一抖的几乎要合缝，却又向外一耸，成了瓜子模样了。”这个细节，具体、形象、生动地反映了阿Q的性格特点——直到死还恪守着自欺欺人的“精神胜利法”。当人们读到这一细节描写时，谁又能不觉得阿Q的可笑、可悲、可怜?又怎么会不“哀其不幸，怒其不争”，进而深思国民的劣根性?

那么，如何进行细节描写呢?我们可以从以下几方面入手。

一、粗线勾勒，简墨白描

用粗线勾勒，简墨白描描摹细节，是最基本最常见的细节描写方法。其关键是抓住事物的特征，用简练的文字描绘出事物的状态和风貌，使其不仅逼真而且传神，有意蕴。如鲁迅的《故乡》中对少年闰土有这样的描写：“一个十一二岁的少年项带银圈，手捏一柄钢叉，尽力向一匹猹刺去。”简单几笔就勾勒出一位勇敢、富有活力的少年英雄形象。这种白描手法，就是鲁迅所说的“有真意，去粉饰，少做作，勿卖弄”的集中体现，虽惜墨如金，却生动传神。

二、精心炼字，以少胜多

在细节描写中，我们要选择恰当的词语，以期以少胜多，乃至一字传神。一篇文章字数多寡不一，但出彩的字(词或短语)往往只有一个!所谓“一字立骨”，就是因一字(词或短语)之功，主旨毕现。因此，在细节描写中我们应仔细推敲字词。如《林教头风雪山神庙》中有句环境描写的句子：“那雪下的正紧。”一个“紧”字就将雪大而急的场面展现在读者面前，同时让人感觉到其中的紧张气氛。

三、巧用修辞，合理想象

运用比喻、拟人、夸张等修辞手法及幻觉、烘托、独白等写作手法，可以增强语言的生动性，变抽象为具体，使无形变为有形。如鲁迅的《药》有这样一段描写：“老栓也向那边看，却只见一堆人的后背，颈项都伸得很长，仿佛许多鸭，被无形的手捏住了的，向上提着。”这一细节，是用比喻的修辞手法来描写一群麻木的、不觉悟的人们，在冷漠地观看刽子手杀害革命者情景的。自己的同胞惨遭杀戮，人们却无动于衷，像看与自己毫不相干的街头热闹似的，令人伤心、痛心。作者那种强烈的愤懑，“哀其不幸，怒其不争”的炽烈情怀，通过这一细节，淋漓尽致地表现出来。

四、根据需要，详略有致

细节从塑造人物形象，表现生活真实的实际需要出发，有时可以写得详细，有时可以写得简略。如《林教头风雪山神庙》写“偷听”的细节有两处：一为店小二妻子奉命在小酒店有心偷听，二为林冲在山神庙无意偷听，谈话者同是陆虞候、富安、管营、差拨等人。但前者写得简略，惜墨如金;后者写得详细，泼墨如云。从“偷听”者角度讲，店小二妻虽在门外，但心里紧张，既要偷听，又要防止被人发现;而后者林冲，身在暗处，无须防备，尽管细听。从谈话者角度讲，前者心怀鬼胎，怕人听到，密谋声低;而后者自以为阴谋得逞，免不了得意忘形，毫无顾忌。因此，店小二妻子只能听得藏头露尾，似是而非，而林冲当然听得真真切切。正是作者这样详略有致的细节安排，才使故事悬念迭生，情节波澜起伏，人物性格鲜明。

You cango boating, go fishing and have a picnic there. It is really a good place tospend your holiday. Besides, you can go and visit Heyuan Museum. There you cansee a lot of dinosaur egg fossils.
