The tale of two cities is a historical story， one of Dickens’ long fictions.The background to the novel is the revolution of France .It portrayed a brutal and bloody story ， but it also contained love and friendship.

When he was young he and his brother stole a countrywoman by force and killed her family .What’s worse ， he used his power to imprison Dr Manette ， a kind and honest man who knew all the things they had done and wanted to disclose their crimes . The Marquis’ death was just the beginning of people’s resistance to the nobleman. Gradually more and more people joined in the revolution. One after another nobleman were sentenced to death and their heads were cut down . However， some innocent people were implicated in the revolution. Charles Darney was one of them He was the nephew of Marquis of Evermonde. To the opposite of his uncle， Darney was a kind and independent young man.

Dickens spoke highly of kindness mercy and love in the novel too. This is the other thone of the novel when Doctor Manette was released from prison. It was his daughter Lucie who took care of him and helped him return to normal. During this time， Dr manette and Lucie knew Charles Darney and Sydeny Carton， the two young man fell in love with Lucie at the same time . At last， Lucie married Chares Darney .Dr Manette accepted Darney as his son-in-law although he knew that Darney was the nephew of the man who threw him into prison for18 years. The tale of two cities is different from other historical fictions. Its characters and main plots are fictional under the real background of the revolution of France. 闲来无事，又重新潜心拜读了一遍《老人与海》，读时却不禁感想颇深，仿佛不是在阅读一本枯燥的书，而是在阅读一颗生动的心，一颗赤红的心，一颗跳动的充满激情的心。那是数年前我体会不到的。我的感怀也由此开始。

简练，或者说精炼的文字，配上扣人心弦的叙述，即使不长的小说，也能成功，而牵动读者的心。《老人与海》在海明威的思绪中流转，充满炽热的液体，不曾冷却。

the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingways most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a GREat part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.

My first impression of this story was from screen.

Its long long ago, maybe before I can read english books. I dont remember which movie edition I had seen. But I was impressed by the music, the scenery and the costume. I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. Its pretty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the heroine,though I didnt think shes beautiful. But shes smart. However, I didnt pay much attention to the plot. I thought its so long that it made me impatient and bored. By now, I havent read the whole story in English or its Chinese version, either. I owe it to my prejudice.

In fact, I didnt understand the story at that time. I didnt know why it called Pride and Prejudice. Of course someone was pride, but I didnt find where s the prejudice. I thought its normal, the way people treated each other in that. I considered prejudice would be very disgusting. But to the movie everthing was OK in my minds, except its length. Now, I think I have understood more about it. Im a prejudiced person so I cant find wheres wrong. I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.

他这种坚持不懈，自信的精神难道不值得我们学习吗？俗语道：不以成败论英雄。虽然老渔夫没有把完整的马林鱼拖回海岸，但他那坚强的意志，勇敢的精神丝毫不比真正的英雄逊色。老渔夫在精神世界中已经成为了历尽磨难而变得顶天立地，战无不胜的巨人了。这不就是所谓的英雄吗？

读《老人与海》有感 读了美国著名作家海明威的小说《老人与海》。我十分佩服小说中老渔夫的意志，他让我懂得了一个人一定要有坚持不懈的精神，才能获得成功。

小说描写的是一个年近六旬的老渔夫，在一次单身出海打鱼时，钓到了一条大鱼，却拉不上来。老渔夫同鱼周旋了几天后，才发现这是一条超过自己渔船数倍的大马林鱼，虽然明知很难取胜，但仍不放弃。后来又因大马林鱼伤口上的鱼腥味引来了几群鲨鱼抢食，但老人仍不愿就这样放弃，最终突出重围，将大鱼带回了渔港，让其他渔夫佩服不已。

当我读到“老渔夫想：这里离海岸实在是太近了，也许在更远的地方会有更大的鱼……”时，我十分佩服这位老渔夫，因为他这时已经打到了一些鱼，但他没有安于现状，而是向着更大的目标前进。再看看我们，平时遇到一点小困难，我们都叫苦连天。我们是祖国的未来，应该像这位老人一样胸怀大志，去追求更好、更大的目标。

One of the most interesting questions about Gullivers Travels is whether the Houyhnhnms represent an ideal of rationality or whether on the other hand they are the butt of Swifts satire. In other words, in Book IV, is Swift poking fun at the talking horses or does he intend for us to take them seriously as the proper way to act? If we look closely at the way that the Houyhnhnms act, we can see that in fact Swift does not take them seriously: he uses them to show the dangers of pride.

First we have to see that Swift does not even take Gullver seriously. For instance, his name sounds much like gullible, which suggests that he will believe anything. Also, when he first sees the Yahoos and they throw excrement on him, he responds by doing the same in return until they run away. He says, "I must needs discover some more rational being," even though as a human he is already the most rational being there is. This is why Swift refers to Erasmus Darwins discovery of the origin of the species and the voyage of the Beagle-to show how Gulliver knows that people are at the top of the food chain. But if Lemule Gulliver is satirized, so are the Houyhnhnms, whose voices sound like the call of castrati. They walk on two legs instead of four, and seem to be much like people. As Gulliver says, "It was with the utmost astonishment that I witnessed these creatures playing the flute and dancing a Vienese waltz. To my mind, they seemed like the greatest humans ever seen in court, even more dextrous than the Lord Edmund Burke" . As this quote demonstrates, Gulliver is terribly impressed, but his admiration for the Houyhnhnms is short-lived because they are so prideful. For instance, the leader of the Houyhnhnms claims that he has read all the works of Charles Dickens, and that he can singlehandedly recite the names of all the Kings and Queens of England up to George II. Swift subtly shows that this Houyhnhnms pride is misplaced when, in the middle of the intellectual competition, he forgets the name of Queen Elizabeths husband.

Swifts satire of the Houyhnhnms comes out in other ways as well. One of the most memorable scenes is when the dapple grey mare attempts to woo the horse that Guenivre has brought with him to the island. First she acts flirtatiously, parading around the bewildered horse. But when this does not have the desired effect, she gets another idea: "As I watched in amazement from my perch in the top of a tree, the sorrel nag dashed off and returned with a yahoo on her back who was yet more monstrous than Mr. Pope being fitted by a clothier. She dropped this creature before my nag as if offering up a sacrifice. My horse sniffed the creature and turned away." It might seem that we should take this scene seriously as a failed attempt at courtship, and that consequently we should see the grey mare as an unrequited lover. But it makes more sense if we see that Swift is being satiric here: it is the female Houyhnhnm who makes the move, which would not have happened in eighteenth-century England. The Houyhnhm is being prideful, and it is that pride that makes him unable to impress Gullivers horse. Gulliver imagines the horse saying, Sblood, the notion of creating the bare backed beast with an animal who had held Mr. Pope on her back makes me queezy .

A final indication that the Houyhnmns are not meant to be taken seriously occurs when the leader of the Houynhms visits Lilliput, where he visits the French Royal Society. He goes into a room in which a scientist is trying to turn wine into water (itself a prideful act that refers to the marriage at Gallilee). The scientist has been working hard at the experiment for many years without success, when the Houyhnmn arrives and immediately knows that to do: "The creature no sooner stepped through the doorway than he struck upon a plan. Slurping up all the wine in sight, he quickly made water in a bucket that sat near the door" .

Book Review: “Camille”

I read the Chinese version of “Camille” a few years ago. At that time I was deeply moved by the main character Marguerite Gautier. “Camille” or “The Lady of the Camellias” by Alexandre Dumas, fils, is the story of Marguerite Gautier, a young courtesan, or kept woman, in Paris in the mid 1800s, and how she falls in love with a young man, Armand Duval, and then tries to escape from her questionable past. Unfortunately, it comes back to haunt her and she ends up returning to that life and dies painfully and alone, but with the knowledge that she was a noble woman at heart. When I first began to read the book, I did not care for Marguerite or her attitude or lifestyle, but as I got further into the narrative, I realized that her saucy attitude was a front to cover the lonely woman that she really was. She felt used, abused and unloved, until the gentle Armand Duval came into her life and showed her that he loved her as a person and not for what she could do for him. It must have taken great courage for Marguerite to leave the life she had lived for so long, knowing all along that it was probably too good to be true and would not last indefinitely. And it also showed that Marguerite really loved Armand Duval for she could even change herself for him.

However, happiness didn’t last for long. When M. Duval, Armands father, came to her, pleading for her to leave Armand to save both Armands reputation and that of his younger innocent sister, Marguerite saw a way to become pure of heart, if not in body. She felt that it was her duty, because she loved Armand so much, to do this even though it meant giving up her own happiness and hurting Armand temporarily. She reluctantly returned to her former life, knowing that some day Armand would forgive her. Sadly, she died in debt and basically alone, except for her one female friend, Julie Duprat, who helped her during her illness. She had her journal sent to Armand after her death, explaining why she had made the choices she had. I think Dumass last few lines about Marguerite being the exception, not the rule were quite true, and I also agreed with his view that while her lifestyle could not be condoned, we as a society assume that all of these type of women are cold and heartless, while this may not always be the case. A person can make the wrong choices in life when they are young, and try to redeem themselves, but sometimes past situations prevent them from changing their lives, even though they desperately wish to do so. This applies to both men and women in many different types of circumstances: involvement in crime; drug or alcohol abuse; gambling; prostitution; financial problems; poor marriage choices; etc. And this is the fact, which exists in the whole society.

As far as the other characters in the book, I think Marguerite was right in saying that no one truly cared about her, but only wanted something from her, the only exceptions being Armand and Julie Duprat. Of course, the Comte de G. and Comte de N. wanted her body and appearance. The Duke needed to “wake up and smell the coffee” and realize that she could never replace his dead daughter. If he truly cared, he could have helped her leave her lifestyle without “keeping” her himself. And lastly, Prudence was a blood-sucking leech who used Marguerite almost worse than the men. I also think she was jealous of the fact that Marguerite had so much more courage than herself and someone truly loved her.

Last morning, when tiding my bookshelf, I took this book out of the shelf, and a dried flower flew away from the book. Not long ago I just read the English version of "Diary of Anne Frank." In fact, this is not the first time I read this book. When I first read it in elementary school, and read the Chinese version. Then still small, still can not read, that means nothing. Now it seems there feeling very deeply.

But Arthur Dimmesdale,his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daughter in the daylight.He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven.He is too weak to admit his sins.He suffers from mysterious heart trouble,seemingly caused by psychological distress.What’s worse,he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins.

After Mr.Dimmesdale’s death ,no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth.All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient .This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minister.When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose,the devil takes him back to the hell .It is a curious subject of observation,however,whether hatred or love are not of the same place.Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person.The two feelings seem basically the same,expect that one is smiled upon by God,while the other is worshipped by the devil.

本书用大量的笔墨记叙了老人与大马林鱼做激烈斗争的情景，从中突显出老人顽强不屈的崇高精神。我认为，大马林鱼是一种象征，它象征着困苦的的人生，老人不畏艰险和它殊死搏斗，成功地捕获了大马林鱼，老人赢了；同样，鲨鱼也是一种象征，它象征着莫测的命运，老人也同样和它作了顽强的抗争，但鱼肉还是被鲨鱼吃光，老人输了。

让我感到震撼的不是老人输在鲨鱼尖利的牙齿之下，而是老人在失败面前那毫不沮丧的气度！海明威在书中说过——一个人并不是生来要给打败的，你尽可以消灭他，可就是打不败他。在我看来，失败就如一首歌，虽然它的旋律不及成功之歌那么亢奋人心，但它更能让人刻骨铭心。就例如家喻户晓的“发明大王”爱迪生，他为了给人类带来光明，做了一千五百次实验，都没有找到做电灯灯丝的合适材料。尽管失败了这么多次，他都没有选择放弃，毅然选择继续试验，并最终取得了巨大成功。

漫漫人生路，并不都是一马平川，荆棘、陷阱随时都会阻挡我们前进的步伐，甚至让我们迷失方向，但只要我们坚定必胜的信念，踏踏实实地坚持走下去，哪怕到不了终点，也会感到欣慰。现在的我们正处于学生时代，获取知识是这个阶段的首要任务，“书山有路勤为径，学海无涯苦作舟”。通往成功彼岸的路上我们会遇到许许多多的挫折、失败。碰到这些情况，千万不能情绪低落，垂头丧气，而应当坚定信念，沉着面对。相信一分耕耘一分收获，相信成功就在不远的前面。抬起头，挺起胸，伴着失败的歌声前行……

“路漫漫其修远兮，吾将上下而求索”。既然失败都来了，成功还会远吗？与命运作不屈的斗争，总有一天胜利会向你招手。

假期我读了海明威的小说《老人与海》。小说中老渔夫的意志令人钦佩，正是老人那种坚持不懈的精神，使他获得了成功。

小说描写的是一个年近六旬的老渔夫，在一次单身出海打鱼时，钓到了一条大鱼，怎么拉也拉不上来。老渔夫同鱼周旋了几天后，才发现这是一条超过自己渔船数倍的大马林鱼，虽然明知很难取胜，但仍不放弃。后来又因大马林鱼伤口上的鱼腥味引来了几群鲨鱼抢食，但老人仍不愿就这样放弃，经过几夜的努力，最终突出重围，将大鱼带回了渔港。

当我读到“大马林鱼开始快速地围着小渔船游动，将缆绳缠绕到了桅杆上……”时，我的心不禁提了起来，想，老人怎么办？他一定会退缩的。可是，结果却令我十分吃惊。书上说“老人右手高举着钢叉，在它跃出水面的一瞬间，竭尽全力地向它的心脏掷去，一声哀鸣结束了大鱼的生命，它静静地浮在水面上……”此时此刻，我的心也像一块千斤重的大石头落了地，终于松了一口气。

是啊，这位老渔夫多么顽强，面对困难，他毫不退缩，奋力挑战。尽管对手凶猛无比，比自己强大，可他仍旧鼓起勇气不气馁，沉着冷静不慌张。要知道这可是无边无际的大海啊！别人遇上这种事也许会被吓倒，不知所措，偃旗息鼓。可书中的老渔夫坚持不懈与大海搏斗，与强手较劲，在艰难中奋力拼搏，才获得了这场生死较量的胜利。我们在生活中也要学习老渔夫的精神，做事情不怕困难，才能取得成功。

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingways most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. It played a great part in his winning the Pulizer Prize in 1953 and the 1954 Novel Prize for Literature and confirmed his power and presence in the literary world. Hemingway is also one of my favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such as The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms and The Snow of Kilimanijaro. But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

I first read this book when I was in my fifteens. And now I remember it just as well as if I had read it yesterday.

On summer vacation of this year, I studied in novel " old man and sea " of Hemingway , famous writer of U.S.A. ,. I admire the old fishermans will in the novel very much, he lets me understand that a person must have unremitting spirit, could succeed . What the novel is described is an old fisherman almost the sixty years old, when go to sea and fish alone once, have angled to a big fish, but can not draw. After tough fisherman and fish have socialized for a few days, just find this is a big Malins fish which exceeds several times of ones own fishing boat, though know perfectly well that it is very difficult to win , does not give up yet. Because big Malin fish fishlike smell of wound attract odd herds of shark vie for the food again later, but the old man is still unwilling to give up like this, stress the tight encirclement finally , take the large fish back to fishing port , let other fishmen admire it endlessly. The old fisherman thinks that as I read ": It is really too close from here to coast, perhaps there are bigger fish in the farther place ……" When,admire very much because this old fisherman in the persons, because play not for some fishing he already at this moment I, but he is not satisfied with the existing state of affairs , but advance towards greater goal. Seeing us again, meet some little difficulties at ordinary times , all of us complain bitterly. We are the future of the motherland, should be as ambitious as this old man, go to pursue well , greater goal. Just because there is this kind of spirit, the old fisherman has obtained the victory of the trial of strength of this life and death. We should study the old fishermans spirit too in life, do the thing and is not afraid of the difficulty , could achieve success . Finally, the novel sees with a teenager that old fisherman has 18 feet of big long Malins fish totally in the tolerance , the ones that have described this fish are enormous again, prove that old fishermans difficulty overcome is big, than ordinary. Old fishermans spirit that makes great efforts to struggle fearless of danger and difficulty that the novel has been extolled, we should be like him too, can t be satisfied with the current situation , should be positive upwards, it should be unremitting to do anything, it must not give up halfway to meeting difficulty should meet the difficulty. Only in this way, we could obtain greater success and victory .
