手中的这个版本是由北京十月文艺出版社出版的，2012年9月印刷，拿到手就很喜欢，封面一派沙漠气象，神秘幽邃，据说是台湾著名设计师聂永真设计的。整本书分为正文、附录、书信三个部分，约二十二万字。主体部分就是正文收录的十七篇散文;附录包括《回乡小笺》、《尘缘》;书信都是三毛从撒哈拉写给台湾爸爸姆妈的。

初时，夜深人静坐在灯下阅读，觉得很是轻松悠闲。《沙漠中的饭店》《结婚记》《悬壶济世》《芳邻》《素人渔夫》《白手成家》，哈哈一乐之余，觉得三毛非常会过日子，特有智慧。待到《娃娃新娘》《爱的寻求》《荒山之夜》《死果》时，轻松不再，一步步看到的是沙漠生活的无奈和惊险，感受到的是生命力的顽强不屈。再到后来，读到《沙巴军曹》《哑奴》和《哭泣的骆驼》这几篇时，竟久久不能释怀。
