陶渊明的曾祖陶侃在东晋初年,以卓越的军事才能,忠心为国，曾在平定杜韬和苏峻的叛乱中，立下了盖世功勋，被朝廷任为太尉之职，封为长沙郡公。渊明的祖父陶茂字梅九，是陶侃的第七子，由于不满兄弟相争，早年就愤而辞去了武昌太守之职,回到寻阳柴桑旧宅隐居，陶渊明之父陶敏是陶茂的第二个儿子，从小聪明伶俐，好学上进，为陶茂所钟爱，陶渊明的母亲孟氏是当时的大名士孟嘉之女，婚后一年，即在晋哀帝兴宁三年(公元365年)六月,产下一子，取名渊明，字元亮。渊明从小聪明过人，读书过目不忘，而且性格沉稳，遇事不慌，双亲视为掌上明珠，亲自对他加以指导，在八、九岁时，就已能诵读诗书，通晓《论语》。晋废帝太和五年(公元370年)，渊明6岁时，父亲陶敏被征西大将军桓温辟为掾属，他和妹妹就跟随父母来到桓温征西府驻地姑孰(今安徽省当涂)，后来又迁往父亲所任的安成(今江西安福)太守任上，读书习武，过了一段无忧无虑的童年生活。然而好景不长，孝武帝太元六年(公元367年)，渊明十二岁时，父亲因操劳过度,一病不起。父亲过世后，母亲孟氏即带着渊明兄妹二人，扶丧回到了寻阳柴桑，靠仅有的一二百亩田租维持家庭生计。陶渊明在少年时代就“猛志逸四海,骞翮思远翥”。他常以曾祖陶侃自强不息，终于建立功勋，成为国家栋梁的事例来勉励自己,暗自发奋，努力学习。每日清晨，鸡鸣即起,习武练剑，晚上则常常秉烛夜读，直到夜半之时。到了十七八岁，已是文韬武略，多所通晓。

Dropped in at National Library to see the National Book Exhibition which will close today. Suprised at the fact that so many kinds of books are published in our country. Thought the childrens books with many pages of colorful illustrations were made very nicely. Bought a copy of the Chinese version of English and American Short Stories at a 20 per cent discount. Am going to read this through in this good season for reading.
