1973年，18岁的李会山中学毕业后，回到家乡北寨村当了一名实物保管员，负责保管村里的物资、器械等。在当时的计划经济时代，这也算是一个很重要的岗位了。在恪尽职守干好本职工作之余，李会山对机械维修和制造产生了浓厚兴趣。而实物保管员的职位也给他琢磨机械维修和制造提供了有利条件。
