An important activity during the Spring Festival is bainian (to pay a New Year call). People start to pay New Year calls from the lunar New Years Day, that is, the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar. Ever since the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century, ordinary people have begun to exchange greeting cards on this day.

春节期间的重要活动是拜年。人们从农历新年，也就是，农历的第一个月的第一天就开始拜年了。自从十四世纪明朝开始普通人在这一天也开始交换贺卡。

On the morning of the lunar New Years Day, people get up very early and call on others. The earlier one does so, the more sincere he is. Moreover, people wear new clothes and a new cap, symbolizing that a new year has begun.

过春节，总是要拜年的，但我说的拜年，因前面有一“大”字，就与一般的拜年有了区别。这种“大拜年”的风俗，发生在牡丹江市郊的一个小山村――东村。那是我的家乡，小的时候，也曾拜过年，但从没有这么“大”过，只不过是亲朋好友走走而已。我离开村子之后，就很少回去过。前几年我们全家回小山村过了一次春节，那种拜年的情景，给我留下极深的印象，今天想起来，仍历历在目。他们不是只拜亲朋好友，而是拜遍全村。

初一那天清早四点多钟，小村子就热闹起来，到处充溢着脚步声，说笑声，拜年声。拜年的多数是家里的孩子，或兄弟，或姊妹，或兄妹，或一个人，或几个孩子搭伴，有的是在外工作回家过年的，有的还在上学。大人一般不出来拜年，而是在家里接待拜年的。几乎家家都在头一天就准备好了瓜子、花生、糖果等。那天我也起的很早。大约从四点开始，我弟弟家的门就不断被人打开，拜年的一伙跟着一伙，你出我进，从未停过。拜年仪式极简单，进屋说一声“过年好”，扭身就走，当主人抓起吃的时，人已走出大门。因为要拜的家很多，要在这一上午拜完全村，不抓紧时间怎么行。

头一天晚上，我弟弟的孩子就跟我儿子商量好，他们要一起出去拜年。所以，天还没亮，他就早早起来，跟着我弟弟的孩子，加入了拜年的行列。他们从村北头拜起，一家一家往南拜。大约九点多钟，我儿子十分兴奋地回来了，他把拜来的糖果之类从兜里掏出来，往炕上一扔，马上又走了，因为他们才拜了村子的一半。当他们拜完年回来，太陽已经偏西了。这是我儿子有生以来，第一次感受到了拜年的乐趣。

十点钟以后，拜年的队伍渐渐稀少了，这时大人才开始出来走走。他们所走的与孩子们的不同，只是走那些常来往的几家，多数是走到谁家就在谁家吃起来。我问起家人和来的客人，这种全村大拜年的风俗是从什么时候开始的。谁也说不清楚是从什么时候开始的，是由谁发起的。这种风俗，突然从某一时候开始了，就再没有间断过，就这样一年一年地流传下来。有趣的是，这种风俗，既不是从哪个村子学来的，也没影响到周围的十里八村，只是在这个小山村封闭式地进行着。

年关又要到了，在城里，除了响成一锅粥的鞭炮声，还让人觉得有点年的味道，而人与人之间的来往则越来越少了，除在电话里问候一声之外，亲自登门拜年的已不很多。这时，我不免又忆起家乡大拜年的情景，越发怀念农民那种人与人之间的纯朴与温馨。
