There are many different beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival.

But one thing for sure is that it had something to do with celebrating and

cultivating positive relationship between people, families, nature and the

higher beings they believed were responsible for bringing/returning the light

each year.

One legend tells us that it was a time to worship Taiyi, the God of Heaven

in ancient times. The belief was that the God of Heaven controlled the destiny

of the human world. He had sixteen dragons at his beck and call and he decided

when to inflict drought, storms, famine or pestilence upon human beings.

Beginning with Qinshihuang, the first emperor to unite the country, all the

emperors ordered splendid ceremonies each year. The emperor would ask Taiyi to

bring favorable weather and good health to him and his people. Emperor Wudi of

the Han Dynasty directed special attention to this event. In 104 BC, he

proclaimed it as one of the most important celebrations and the ceremony would

last throughout the night. They clean it all up in the morning.

Another legend associates the Lantern Festival with Taoism. Tianguan is the

Taoist god responsible for good fortune. His birthday falls on the 15th day of

the first lunar month. It is said that Tianguan likes all types of

entertainment, so followers prepare various kinds of activities during which

they pray for good fortune.

Yet another common legend dealing with the origins of the Lantern Festival

speaks of a beautiful bird that flew down to earth from heaven, which was hunted

and killed by some villagers. This angered the Jade Emperor in Heaven because

the bird was his favorite one. Therefore, he planned a storm of fire to destroy

the village on the 15th lunar day. The Jade Emperors daughter heard of this

plan, and warned the villagers of her father’s plan to destroy their village.

The village was in turmoil because nobody knew how should they escape their

imminent destruction.

However, a wise man from another village suggested that every family should

hang red lanterns around their houses, set up bonfires on the streets, and

explode firecrackers on the 14th, 15th, and 16th lunar days. This would give the

village the appearance of being on fire to the Jade Emperor. On the 15th lunar

day, troops sent down from heaven whose mission was to destroy the village saw

that the village was already ablaze, and returned to heaven to report to the

Jade Emperor. Satisfied, the Jade Emperor decided not to burn down the village.

From that day on, people celebrate the anniversary on the 15th lunar day every

year by carrying red lanterns on the streets and exploding firecrackers and

fireworks.

There are many stories on how this festival was created. One other story is

about a maid. In the Han Dynasty, Mr. Eastern was a favorite advisor of the

emperor. One winter day, he went to the garden and heard a little girl crying

and getting ready to jump into a well to commit suicide. Mr. Eastern stopped her

and asked why. She said she was a maid in the emperors palace and her name was

Yuan-Xiao.

She never had the chance to meet her family after she started worked at the

palace. She missed them so much every 12th lunar month. If she couldnt have the

chance to show her filial piety in this life, she would rather die. Mr. Eastern

promised her to find a way so she could reunion with her family. Mr. Eastern

left the palace and set up a fortune-telling stall on the street and disguised

himself as a fortuneteller. Because of his reputation, many people asked for

their fortunes.

But every one got the same prediction - a severe fire accident on the 15th

lunar day. The rumor spread quickly. Everyone was worried about the future and

asked Mr. Eastern for help. Mr. Eastern said, "On the 13th lunar day, the God of

Fire will send a fairy lady in red to burn down the city. If you see a lady in

red wearing green pants riding a black horse on that day, you should ask for her

mercy." On that day, Yuan-Xiao pretended to be the red fairy lady. When people

asked for her help, she said, "Im the messenger of the God of Fire and came to

check on the city and Im going to set up fire on 15th. This is an order from

Jade Emperor. He will watch from the heavens.

I will give you a copy of the imperial decree from the God of Fire. You

should go to ask your emperor to find a way out." After she left, people went to

the palace to show the emperor the decree which reads "The capital city is in

trouble. Fire burns on the palace, and fire from Heaven burns all night long on

the 15th." The emperor of Han Dynasty was very shocked. He called and asked Mr.

Eastern for advice. After pondering for a while, Mr. Eastern said, "I heard that

the God of Fire likes to eat Tang-Yuan (Sweet dumpling). Does Yuan-Xiao often

cook Tang-Yuan for you? On the 15th lunar day, let Yuan-Xiao make Tang-Yuan.

Your Majesty will take charge of the worshipping ceremony and you will give

an order to every house to prepare Tang-Yuan to worship the God of Fire at the

same time. Also, deliver another order to ask every house in the city to hang

red lantern and explode fire crackers. Lastly, everyone in the palace and people

outside the city should carry their lanterns on the street to watch the lantern

decoration and fireworks. If everything goes this way, the Jade Emperor would be

deceived.

Then everyone can avoid the fire accident." The emperor happily followed

the plan. Lanterns were everywhere in the capital city on the night of the 15th

lunar day. People were walking on the street. Fire crackers kept making lots of

noise. It looked like the entire city was on fire. Yuan-Xiaos parents went into

the palace to watch the lantern decorations, and Yuan-Xiao made a big lantern

and wrote her name on the lantern. They happily reunited together after her

parents called her name. Everybody was safe during the night. The emperor of Han

Dynasty had a new order that people should do the same thing every year. Since

Yuan-Xiao cooked the best Tan-Yuan, people called the day Yuan-Xiao

Festival.

Young people were chaperoned in the streets in hopes of finding love.

Matchmakers acted busily in hopes of pairing couples. The brightest lanterns

were symbolic of good luck and hope. As time has passed, the festival no longer

has such implications.

Those who do not carry lanterns often enjoy watching informal lantern

parades. In addition to eating tangyuan (simplified Chinese: 汤圆; traditional

Chinese: 湯圓; pinyin: tāngyuán), another popular activity at this festival is

guessing lantern riddles (which became part of the festival during the Tang

Dynasty), which often contain messages of good fortune, family reunion, abundant

harvest, prosperity and love.

Many years ago, when China was poor and lagged much behind the world, a lot

of men went to California to seek for gold in the hope that they could be rich

when they returned to hometown. American dream once influenced the world and it

俗话说：“十五的月亮十六圆”。

今天是八月十六，正是赏月的最佳时间。吃完晚饭，我和家人带上月饼、水果等到楼顶去赏月。

我们上去之后，先把月饼、水果、刀叉等摆好，就开始边吃月饼边赏月，好温馨的天伦之乐!

举头望天，本以为可以看到一轮皎洁的明月，可这时月亮却和我们捉起了迷藏，躲到白云的后面去了。此时，我才明白苏东坡为什么如此感慨“人有悲欢离合，月有阴晴圆缺，此事古难全”。

过了一会，月亮慢慢地从云后面露出了笑脸，很像一个害羞的小姑娘，犹抱琵琶半遮面，不肯以真面目示人。在我们全家的共同期待下，月亮终于慢慢地露出了庐山真面目。很圆很圆，犹如一个白玉盘，这让我想起了一句古诗：“小时不识月，呼作白玉盘。又疑瑶台镜，飞在青云端。”

月亮慢慢地升高，银灰色的清辉洒满大地，月光如水水如天。面对此情此景，教语文的老妈吟诵起唐朝诗人张若虚《春江花月夜》里的一句诗：“江天一色无纤尘，皎皎空中孤月轮”。

在这个美好的夜晚，我希望天下所有人都阖家团圆，共度一个月圆人更圆的中秋之夜!

我的家乡，算不上富饶，也并不出名，但它却是我七彩人生中，最美丽的一色。家乡的芬芳，永远留存在我的心灵中。

不必说人间仙境般的白云山，也不必说有伟人卧像的天池山，单是名不经传的竹林寺和陆浑水库就让人流连忘返。

竹林寺坐落在一个小山坡上，没有寺门，只是在半山腰上竖立着一块石碑，上面刻着三个朱红色的字——竹林寺。它的三面都被郁郁葱葱的竹林环抱着。那竹林的绿是很浓很纯的，仿佛一块青翠欲滴的绿水晶。远远望去，就像一块厚厚的绿被子，润绿了云雾缭绕的山谷，也映绿了远远的山峦。金色的阳光照射进竹林，层层叠叠的竹叶便把它碎成了星星点点，铺洒在地上，使地面像镶上了宝石一般。风吹翠竹，沙沙作响，仿佛是一首和谐动听的乐曲。

走进竹林，映入眼帘的是株株青竿，笔直的挺立着，直指苍穹，使人不由得想起“千磨万击还坚劲”的诗句。一些麻雀在细枝上不安分地跳来跳去，也不知是什么东西惊动了它们，忽然呼啦啦的全部拍着翅膀飞走了……

寺院的中央是一棵很大的`树，几人合抱才能围住。我不知道它叫什么名字，上面却挂满了红带子，应该是人们祈福时挂上去的。正对着大殿的方向，还有一口大钟，上面镌刻着美丽的花纹。拿起旁边的木柱撞一下，“当——”的声响回荡在山谷间，洪亮却不刺耳。

到了夏天，陆浑水库就成了人们的乐园。人们从不同的地方纷纷赶到陆浑水库，住家庭宾馆，吃野生鱼宴，坐摩托潜艇，尽情享受夏日风光。那边，有人安静的坐着钓鱼，耐心地等待鱼儿上钩，还有不甘寂寞的孩子们在浅水边嬉戏玩闹，更有人躺在岸边一脸惬意的享受日光浴。如果你起得早，就能欣赏到著名的“陆浑春晓”。它的风光曾吸引着许多人慕名前来呢。

夜幕降临，陆浑大坝上的灯亮了起来。长长的堤坝上仍旧人来人往，热闹非凡。小吃摊上欢声笑语不断，甜蜜的恋人相携相依在林荫小道上，还有倚在堤坝旁欣赏水库夜色的人们。此时的水库，波平如镜，只有晚风拂过，泛起一层层涟漪。灯光、人影、月光、星辰，倒映在水中，幻化出一个美妙的水中世界。

家乡的景色虽并不为人熟知，却时刻铭记在我的心里，在我的生命中打下了烙印。我爱我的家乡!

Each year, people burn or cut down 143,000 square kilometers (55,000 square

miles) of the forest. People who burn or cut down trees do it for different

reasons: farmers cut down trees in order to get more fertilize lands to grow

rice or vegetables, and use the woods as fuel. Timber companies cut down trees

and turn them into furniture or paper productions. As to goal miners, they

remove the forests to find out whether there are goal underground.

However, many of us fail to realize that forests are the lungs of the

earth. When we cut down trees, we also push ourselves in to a dangerous

situation. That is the global warming. When you come to think about it, there

are only few ways to solve these negative effects: stop cutting down trees

blindly; try to find some clear energy that can replace oil and coal. But these

solutions can be impractical to some degreed.

Why trees can be so important to the whole nature? First of all, trees are

the habitat of many animals. When we cut down trees, we not only destroy

animals’ habitats but also ourselves. We just gradually destroy natural links.

The result is that many spices of animals and plants are dying out. Secondly,

cutting down trees cause global warming, to some degree. Naturalists compare

forest to human’s lungs. The forests absorb the carbon dioxide and other gas

that cause global warming, and then give off the oxygen that good for the human

beings and other living creatures. It’s refreshed the air as well as reduced the

noise. If the air quality is bad, people may die from cancers, or the new

diseases for which they have no immunity. Forests also play an important role in

the prevention of natural disasters. Warmer temperatures cause water to expand

and also create more water by melting polar ice caps. That’s to say, the nations

which near the ocean may have been flooded by the water. But the forests can

prevent water loss and soil erosion, and cool off the global temperatures. It’s

the key to keep the balance of the nature.

Sometimes people only care about money making; they don’t care about the

price we pay for the pollution. When the disaster is around the corner, we may

be afraid and frustrated. The earth, on which our economies have always been

based, is suddenly threatening our existence. All we hope that is this

overpopulated, over industrialized planet can carry on for a longer time. And

maybe, it’s time for us to realize that we should protect the earth, stop

cutting down trees blindly and madly.

Today is March 8, International Womens Day is to commemorate the world of

working women to fight for peace and democracy, womens liberation struggle

holiday.

Since yesterday, I discussed with my father on how to make my mother happy

over the holiday. I would first make a suggestion: "Give my mother to buy a new

phone." Dad thought for a moment, said: "Mom bought a mobile phone soon, you can

use, there is no need to change." Dad said: "We go out to buy some cosmetics,

her mother there." I am opposed to: "Moms cosmetics too much, many of which are

not all useful." My Father and I are anxious, and in the end what got her point?

We simply asked her what he wanted bar. But my mother said: "I do not want to

buy, I just want to sleep." I do not know why my mother this way, but I know my

mother is very hard to control more than 300 college students, daytime talk,

meetings, writing papers, fill out information and give students lessons, etc.

in the evening and students should check the study up the bedroom. If it is me,

nothing.

However, I and Dad are determined to give my mother, "International Womens

Day" gifts, things came back to buy her mother was shocked at my father bought a

goggles and a pillow, my mother smiled.

今天，看见超市里有卖粽子的，我就央求妈妈给我买几个，老妈爽快地说：“明天我们一起包!”。

开始包粽子了，我麻利地拿起一片叶子，抓上一大把米，塞上了两个大红枣，费了九牛二虎之力才把口封上，才兴奋了没几秒，“呲”一声响，米漏出来了!我仔细一看，啊!原来是角破了。妈妈过来对我说;“不要急，看妈妈给你做个示范。”粽叶在妈妈手中飞舞着，我仔细的看着，心里暗暗发誓，下次只许成功不许失败!加油加油!

我再次卷起粽叶，角上填上小枣，又小心地抓了把糯米，笨手笨脚地堵上口。开始缠线了，这次我缠得非常紧，很像一个皱巴巴的老爷爷那沧桑的面庞。虽然丑，但是却包住了。我左看右看，怎么也分辨不出是什么形状。再看看妈妈包的粽子。哇!又漂亮又结实，不但棱角分明，还能看出是个圆鼓鼓的小胖子呢。于是，我不服输的劲头上来了，一定要包个好看的!

又到了关键一步，缠线!这次缠得时候，我想了想：假若是医生给病人缠带子的话，可不能缠得这么丑，肯定要美观一些。于是，我下足了功夫，包了个有模有样的粽子。但是，我忽略了一点，粽子虽然美观，但是，绑得却不够紧，不一会儿，就又破了。

我就像一个撒了气的气球，垂头丧气。思量再三，我想出了一个好办法。缠线时，我把线的一头用嘴使劲咬住，腾出手来，一手绕线，一手使劲缠。我打量着自己的作品，有型了，也紧实了，只是不太美观，像一只小哈巴狗趴在那儿。我忍不住咧嘴笑起来。

“这样就不错了，毕竟是第一次嘛”。妈妈笑着说道。

通过这件事我明白了一个道理：要想学会一样本领，就要坚持不懈的努力。

Today, I did housework for grandmother. She is not very healthy and I decide to do housework for her more frequently. And she will feel happy and become better. Suddenly, an idea hit me that it’s terrible to grow old becuase you have to worry about both your health and others’ opinions. Once again, I make a decision to be a good girl.

仍然记得那个夏天——那次不经意间看到的那株向日葵。

雨中，我匆匆地路过一个角落，突然看见风雨中的它静静露出一丝金黄。在那个角落里挣扎着，用自己宽大的花托做伞，使雨水怎么也流不进面朝下的花盘，就这样，它放弃开花时的华美，垂着头，不再仰望阳光，不再企盼眷顾。只是偷偷地隐忍着，等待孩子的成长。

终于，雨停了。一切变的格外干净、透明。

她昂起了头，把全身力量汇集成一股，在最短的瞬间，用最快的速度，一激勃发。整个花冠舒展而漂亮的打开了!幸福的泪水顺着花茎滑落下来。

雨后初晴，人们匆匆路过这个角落。而来往中，却蓦地被一抹金光晃到了眼睛，惊喜中不觉脱口——“这是怎样一株漂亮的向日葵!”

她终于灿烂地笑了，因为人们认可了她的努力。而有谁知道，从她决定绽放的那一刻起，风雨就一直伴随着她，而她却始终坚守着自己的信念——坚强挺立，持之以恒。风雨丝毫没能削减她的美丽，禁锢她的成长，人们忽视的目光也没能断送她获取盛开的想法!

我又想起今年的那场落雪。

一朵雪花飘落下来。在它落下来之前，一缕水汽邀请它留在广阔的苍穹继续飞舞，而它毫不犹豫携住尘埃，翩翩飘落。它落在河床里，冰挽留它沉睡冰面，一同谛听冬的旋律，而它没有停止。它随风又飞向了一棵树，终于，在那里，它能面对银装素裹的世界，泛出最亮丽的光泽，姿态从容而又高贵。太阳出来了，它开始融化，化成一颗晶莹的水滴，湮没在树干里，但它的灵魂在枝丫上高洁地舞动。

就这样——一片雪花，谢绝了一切挽留、诱惑和接纳，坚持着自己对生命的仰望，任心灵奔逸舒卷，以它生命的独特轨迹，证明着自身的尊贵与圣洁;

就这样——一朵葵花，历经了风雨的考验，学会了面对逆境时的坚强;学会了面对失败时的乐观，铸就了自己别样的人生!

是的，生活在色彩缤纷的尘世中，哪个人会不困惑，不迷茫?而如何走出禁锢，穿越云霭，穿越穹隆，却绝不是一件容易的事。其实，一切皆源于心——你们有信念么?请记住，无论是什么，无论在何时，无论有怎样的境遇，请千万不要抛弃它。坚守信念，任何生命的心灵深处都有一颗馨香的大树，即便是天国中飘来的.一片雪花，抑或是荒园中的一株随风摇曳的野草，甚至是一只匆匆奔走的蚂蚁。

这心灵之树，就是你的尊严，你的操守，你的信仰——你生命中最纯的底色。

The volunteering spirit has spread among the Chinese people in recent

years,especially among young people。

Volunteering is of tremendous benefits to both those in need and

society.Take the Wenchuan Earthquake as an example.Hundreds of thousands of

volunteers play an active role in Wenchuan quake-hit areas.And they contribute

daily necessaries,offer medical help and psychological help to the disaster

relief work.

Besides,volunteering would be beneficial to the volunteers

themselves~Getting involved in volunteering,volunteers will be exposed to a new

environment,and they can learn how to work well in a team,how to improve their

interpersonal skills and organizational skills，all of which are critical for

their professional growth。As a college student,I sincerely hope that everyone

would join the volunteering work.It is not only good to our society,but also a

chance for us to grow and to learn.
