At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowy river appeared in front of the Cowhand. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called "Qi Xi" (Double Seventh)。

1.A greeting card sent to arrive on Saint Valentines Day (Feb. 14) declaring ones love for someone, but usually without giving the name of the sender

2. The person to whom a Valentine is sent

valentine [lentain]

Several stories are told about the origin of Saint Valentines Day. One legend dates as far as the days of the Roman Empire. According to the story, Claudius, the Emperor of Rome, wanted to increase the size of his army. He knew that it would be easier to get young men who were not married to join. Therefore he made a rule that no young man could marry until he had served a certain number of years in the army.

A priest named Valentine broke the rule and secretly married a great many young people. Finally, Claudius found out about Valentine and put the priest in prison, where he remained until his death on Feb.14.

After his death, Valentine was made a saint, and the day of his death was named Saint Valentines Day. It became the custom for lovers to send each other messages on this day. Now Saint Valentines Day is a time for people to send one another greetings of many kinds.

February 14, Valentines Day, is sweet hearts day, on which people in love with each other express their tender emotions. People sometimes put their love messages in a heart-shaped box of chocalates, or a bunch of flowers tied with red ribbons. Words or letters may be written on the flower-covered cards, or something else. Whatever the form may be, the message is almost the same:“Will you be my valentine?”

Another story has it that while Valentine was in prison waiting for his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. Through his faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius daughter and fell in love with her. Just before he was put to death, he asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her “From Your Valentine”, a phrase that lived ever after.

Another valentine gentleman you may be wondering about is Cupid (Latin,“desire”). In Roman mythology Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of love. His counterpart in Greek mythology is Eros, god of love. Cupid is often said to be a mischievous boy who goes around wounding both gods and humans with his arrows, causing them to fall in love.

It is an old English custom to send a message or card to the person you love on St. Valentines Day. Here are some samples:

1. To ones beloved wife:

Susan Harbert: Thanks for: 14 good years, 5000 breakfasts, 5 kids and you.

Love Walley

2. To ones lover:

Mary my darling. I love you madly. I am so happy to have you as my valentine.

I love you. I hope you have a GREAT Valentines Day. Thank you for your love and thanks for caring for me so much.

Love,

Lock

Dear Mom:

That I love you.

I think it would have to be courage,

With it you can face all changes, all losses,

All failure even loneliness—

And build anew and more strongly than before.

Dad

5.To ones beloved teacher:

Thank you for making learning not a job but a joy,

Thank you for making me feel valuable,

And turn to when life gets difficult.

The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called "Qi Xi" (Double Seventh).

Scholars have shown the Double Seventh Festival originated from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD220). Historical documents from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD371-420) mention the festival, while records from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) depict the grand evening banquet of Emperor Taizong and his concubines. By the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1279-1368) dynasties, special articles for the "Qi Xi" were seen being sold on markets in the capital. The bustling markets demonstrated the significance of the festival.

Today some traditional customs are still observed in rural areas of China, but have been weakened or diluted in urban cities. However, the legend of the Cowhand and Weaver Maid has taken root in the hearts of the people. In recent years, in particular, urban youths have celebrated it as Valentines Day in China. As a result, owners of flower shops, bars and stores are full of joy as they sell more commodities for love.

There are varying opinions as to the origin of Valentine‘s Day. Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D., the same day that had been devoted to love lotteries.

Legend also says that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer‘s daughter, who had become his friend, and signed it From Your Valentine. Other aspects of the story say that Saint Valentine served as a priest at the temple during the reign of Emperor Claudius. Claudius then had Valentine jailed for defying him. In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine.

St. Valentines Day is celebrated on February 14, and White Day one month later on March 14.

It is said that St. Valentines Day was imported to Japan in 1958 by a Japanese confectionery company. In Japan, it is only the women giving presents - mainly chocolate - to men, but not the other way around.

Men are supposed to return the favours received on Valentines Day one month later on White Day, a Japanese creation. White Day is believed to have been introduced by a marshmallow manufacturing company in the 1960s. The white marshmallows gave the day its name but other kinds of presents such as candy, flowers, etc. have become more popular over the years.

According to our survey, White Day is still less popular than St. Valentines Day. 67% of the female survey participants indicated that they do celebrate Valentines Day while only 45% of the men indicated to celebrate White Day. The two events are most popular among participants younger than 20 years with 75% celebrating Valentines Day and 56% celebrating White Day.

Valentines Day is also more popular among single people than married couples, however, White Day is clearly more popular among married people (51%) than singles (40%). In fact, among married couples, White Day (51.3%) is almost as popular as Valentines Day (53.9%).

As expected, the most popular Valentines present is chocolate with over three forth of all women (who celebrate Valentines Day) following this tradition. One third of the women celebrating Valentines Day give a present to just one person. Another third gives presents to two to three persons, while the rest (27%) gives presents to more than three.

Three out of four women give presents to their boyfriends or husbands, 40% to other friends, 27% to co-workers or classmates, and 24% to relatives.

On White Day, on the other hand, there seems to be a much greater variety of presents. 33% of the men celebrating White Day give cookies as presents. Only 11% give flowers. 55% make presents other than cookies, sweets or flowers. Almost half of the men give presents to two to three women and 29% to just one.

The rest (19%) gives presents to more than three women. Two thirds of the men celebrating White Day give presents to their girlfriends or wives. Less than one out of four give presents to co-workers and/or friends. Only one out of ten make presents to relatives.

Chinese Valentines Day

The festival has its origin from a romantic tragedy. As the story goes, once there was a cowherd, Niulang, who lived with his elder brother and sister-in-law. But she disliked and abused him, and the boy was forced to leave home with only an old cow for company. The cow, however, was a former god who had violated imperial rules and was sent to earth in bovine form.

One day the cow led Niulang to a lake where fairies took a bath on earth. Among them was Zhinu, the most beautiful fairy and a skilled seamstress.

The two fell in love at first sight and were soon married. They had a son and daughter and their happy life was held up as an example for hundreds of years in China.

Yet in the eyes of the Jade Emperor, the Supreme Deity in Taoism, marriage between a mortal and fairy was strictly forbidden. He sent the empress to fetch Zhinu.

The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other.
