长跑运动可以增强心脏肌肉收缩的力量，提高血液中红血球携带氧的能力，可以使血管粗壮有弹性，可以激活淋巴细胞提高人体的免疫功能。在长跑运动时由于需求氧的量成倍增多，呼吸次数及深度也随之增加，经常进行长跑就能有效的提高呼吸肌力量，加大肺泡的通气量，从而提高了肺活量。
